Swinging Good? Time to Video.

- Audio version at the end of this post –

I read a message from a PPGS Inner Circle Member that said he has been working on the vertical swing for a few months now and things were really falling into place.  He said that he was playing well, his scores were dropping and his play and ball striking was more consistent and his confidence increasing.  He said that it was the best and most consistent stretch of golf he has ever played.  He was certain that the ultimate cause or underlying reason for his improved scoring and consistent play was his swing was falling into place.  The consistency in his swing had tremendously improved his ball striking.

This is something we all dream about and it’s the reason why we try to learn more about the golf swing, take lessons, practice more on our swing and all aspects of our short game.  It is all about wanting and striving to be the best we can be.  It is all about wanting to develop a more simple and consistent swing.  With a more reliable and consistent swing, ball striking improves and we hit more fairways and greens.  Then, ultimately, the final proof of improvement is scores get lower and then the handicap gets lower.   Another side benefit is that maybe we start beating that playing partner we never have beaten and for once, taste the sweet victory of getting into their pocket.

The big question now is how you can keep this new level of play and lower scoring.  How can you keep your new and improved swing and ball striking steady and consistent and in improvement mode?  The big question from the negative aspect is how do you not stagnate and, even worse, falter and start back tracking?

The first and obvious answer is quality practice.  You need to keep up the practice regimen that led to your improved swing and likely increase it if further improvement is desired.  You need to keep your stats when you play to know what is good, mediocre to bad or poor.  These stats are your guide to setting up your practice sessions.  You need to practice the good points enough to keep them good to even getting better.  But the most important practice is practicing the mediocre to bad as they are what is holding you back, and adding strokes to your score.  The bad in your game is what must be worked on the most as that is where improved performance will provide the biggest degree of lowering your scores.

One other important point that I think is most overlooked and many times not even considered by most golfers, including professionals, is videotaping your swing when swinging well and playing well.  When not swinging well, we are all quick to whip out the DVD or Flip cameras, or  now our cell phones, to record our under-performing swing.  Or we go take a lesson and with our pro try to figure out what is wrong.   We look at the swings in stop action, slow motion, back and forth and over and over, trying to figure out what is wrong with the setup and/or the swing.

When you have video of your swing when swinging well, you have yourself at your best to look at and use as the model to compare the mediocre and bad against.  When you can see the good setup and swing, and compare the now “not so good to bad” against it, the comparison is simple, and most importantly accurate.

Setup problems will likely stand out and even jump out off the screen at you.  Stance too wide, ball position way off, posture too stooped over, or arms reaching too much.  Swing problems, like the forward foot raising and knee kicking inward too much, or the rear leg straightening, and head and spine moving, even if very subtly, and stand out and are easily seen in comparing the bad to the good.

We all strive to setup and swing better to shoot lower scores.  When our practice begins to produce improvement in our swings and better ball striking, video tape it for future reference.  Think of your swing growing up like your changing life and your children growing up and all the pictures you took to document and remember all the good and happy times and occasions.

Treat your golf swing and video tape it as you improve for future reference as well as just for the same of remembering where you were and have come from.  But most importantly, video tape your swing when it is good, as that is the ultimate reference source to help you get your setup and swing back up to par.

This is just a come-on to buy what you have to sell. What instruction was in this first lesson?
    Nothing, absolutely nothing.
  • Funny you should mention the video thing.
I played great yesterday and I was thinking I should video my swing just to see what I'm doing correct for a change.

I am struggling hugely with certain elements of the PPGS. Although I have improved by 5-12 strokes per round, I am still hitting dreadful scores, with my best ever being 107!!

What I struggle to grasp is the swing up to a T finish. I struggle to visualise what that means and I know not doing it is causing me to hit fat a lot. When I connect I am getting fantastic distance, although were it actually goes is anybodies guess! I reckon that I am hitting about 35 - 40% of balls straight, sometimes with good distance, sometimes not!

I am totally obsessed with this game and would really like to start getting better, so I'm not embarrassed to play with my peers!

    Please help!

Just cheeking the leaderboard for the Honda Classic. Glad to see DJ made the cut again. Since Don is always going on about stats I decided to take a look at DJ's. Boy they keep track of a lot of stuff. Of course the glaring stat for his rounds so far is 12 over due to bogeys and doubles. I noticed a similar trend last week. If he improved this one stat he'd be 6 strokes closer to the lead today and in the top 10.

The other stat the was interesting is that DJ has trouble with Par 3's, getting up and down from the sand, and still is ranking over 100 in putting. DJ hits the ball a ton off the tee but being 108 in accuracy puts a lot of pressure on his approach shots.

Obviously DJ does a lot of things well as there are some really big names who missed the cut this week. According to the stats DJ could be one of the top players if he improved his short game stats even by 50%.

Oh, side note. When David Duval finished 2nd, I believe it was, I wondered if he was back. Golf being what it is one tournament is not a good indicator of how well a guy is playing. Being that he didn't make the cut this week we'll have to wait and see how he does over the next few weeks before we can get an idea how much he's been able to get his game back together.

P.S. Was playing really well for awhile. Than my PPGS went south. Going to pull out the Videos and go over the fundamentals again. Don's taught me one thing for sure - the set up determines the motion and I'm pretty sure my set up sucks right now.

P.P.S Just read Utley's putting book. Not that impressive compared with Farnsworth's. But it did explain the reverse overlap grip pretty well. I tried it out yesterday and was more consistent. Of course, one good round doesn't mean a thing. How many times have you tried a golf lesson out and found it worked great only to find the next time you did the exact same thing you go terrible results. Golf - fickle, fickle, fickle.
  • Don, I very much liked the downloads for the top 10 master mistakes and how to correct them. I liked the way you explained each step. However I only received the first 3. The grip, the setup, and posture. That was a week ago on the 27,28,& March 1. Please send me the rest of the promised set, I really liked them. I did join the inner circle club for a 1.00 for a 14 day trial but like the ten master mistakes better and would like to receive the remaining 7 downloads for mistakes and how to correct them.

    Thanks--Don Kramer

  • Hey Don,

You can get the rest of the 10 Master Mistakes videos by clicking on the FAQs link above and then clicking on the link that allows you to "recover" any of the videos that you've missed (it's the very first question).

I am having trouble with the fairway woods. Topping, and hitting behind the ball.

What should I do to correct this?
  • DAVID BUXBAUM
    Here's one for you...

As a "former" single didget I hit the ball well , but a knee and 2 hips "plus" age has done it's thing to my game...

I have a terriable problem of standing up as I go through the ball, not good hits and not good distance.

I used to see the club hit the ball but standing up prevents that.

Is there a drill I can use to... stay down and stay quiet?
  • The Surge!
    To Shayne Murphy,

Remember the BUMP is like skipping a rock on a lake in that the lower body transition of the legs and hips begins sifting forward while the hands, arms and club are still going up in the backswing.

The key to a good bump is that is a small lateral forward shift or slide of the lower body. The key is the belt buckle should move no more than an inch or two laterally then the hips turn to allow the torso to turn through and square up to the target for the finish. The "Skip rock on a lake" drill is perfect for seeing the lower body start while your throwing hand is still going up. Also note how little your lower body and hips slide and how fast your torso stands up and squares up facing the target after releasing the rock.

    To Frank Brown,

I think if ones stance is a little wide weight more on the inside of the feet may help reduce sway. The thing you have to guard against with weight on the inside of the feet with a wide stance is titting toward the forward foot in the backswing and then backward into a reverse weight shift in the downswing.

I prefer a shoulder wide stance for the driver and slightly narrower for the rest of the clubs. I teach that the knees should be wide, that is set in line over the ankles and thus the weight is directly centered on the feet.

There are plenty of articles in the archives on stance width, knee position and weight distribution.

    To Gary Willis,

Since you are hitting everything from thins to chunks it seems obvious you are not staying level in your downswing to impact and through. A key problem is that you likely are letting your knees bend bend too much or your feet are moving around too much. You could also be doing the opposite in that your forward leg is straightening in the transition, raising your torso and can cause both the chunks and thins depending on how you react to the lift. This straightening front leg could also cause a reverse weight shift pushing you backwards causing the impact problems.

    To Bill Kerney,

You thought correct about firm hands and no wrist cock in the swing. There is arm rotation that in a takeaway to a vertical lift by a player as tall as DJ who rotates the arms and lifts the club vertical quickly, the rotation gives the illusion of wrist cock.

There are plenty of articles in the archives on grip pressure and the takeaway and arm rotation and no wrist cock that you can check out to get more detailed explanations.

    To Dale Hanson,

Ball position could be a problem as well as alignment. You also could be over swinging as well as straightening up your forward leg in the transition which would pull you up out of the shot or push you backwards into a reverse weight shift. Your forward arm could also be breaking down pulling your hands and club up out of the shot.

    To Spyder:
You're looking for a swing key to a smooth and consistant takeaway. To my mind, DJ gave it to us in the Driver video. Just ROTATE IT BACK and up. If you watch him closely you'll see that that is exactly all he does. This took all the confusion out of the backswing for me. It simplifies it and get me ready for the forward swing.
TO Bill Kerney: Try just rotating it back and you'll see that the clubhead does move at tremendous speed. Hopefully you got the Driver video. DJ makes everything pretty clear about how he swings the club.
  • Hi Surge; Really glad to hear you are still improving your instruction aspect of the PPGS. I am looking forward to the you releasing PPGS instructors in various parts of the country. Everything in your videos and manual is pretty easy to grasp.......except for the Bump. I have tried that move but cannot get the timing down or probably the move itself. I know that has to be what is affecting my impact area. As soon as we have an instructor in the Chicagoland area I'm booking some time. I am sure a set of well trained eyes will get squared on this one piece that I need personal attention on.

Good luck to you in your growing business as you really are on to something that really does help lots of us striving golfers.
  • William
What is the point of having a page full of questions and no answers. I don't get it....
  • Frank Bowen
Hi Surge, I must say I have become more consistant with your swing and I was just feeling it groove quite well and then our season ended. I live in MN and didn't make it to a warmer climate this winter, to add to my frustration. We do have a heated driving range in the area (hit out of garages to an open snow filled hill) so I know it still feels good to swing, but it's not like being out on a course!
I get some e-mails from some other Golf "gurus" and they mentioned that some of the better golfers put their weight on the insides of their feet, to give more "control" to their shots. I've never read where you advocate this approach and wondered if you have some input on that tactic.
I did try that on the range and it did give me a "feel of better balance" and would like to hear what you have to say about it.
    Thanks, Frank
  • spyder
Is there one swing key for the takeaway that can be used to start the swing with a confident, "first move"?
  • Jerry Coughlin
Frozen at downswing my practice swiing is want want, but on the downswing all is lost like it is alll new, why can't I repUeatt my practice to my practice swing?
  • Checking out DJ's swing at the '09 Masters on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK-SqKWhq8A

the first thing I notice is at the start of the swing how much his clubhead is moving and his hands are hardly moving at all. Just the opposite of Steve Stricker. I thought the grip was supposed to be firm and there should be no wrist cock.

    Can you clarify?

If you had an illustration of your teaching points with DJ's implementing it that would be awesome. Drawing lines etc.

Also ... is there a way to create a category for each type of question? You've got great ideas but us users all have different ideas and if you could categorize our questions and answer each category of similar questions then we would get a sense that our ideas were being dealt with. I've written a number of times and never gotten a response that seems indended to answer what interests me. If all of us users can get a sense that you are responding to our ideas that would generate an even greater appeal for what you are doing ... which I believe is absolutely great even as you haven't yet touched on areas that interest me. (Measuing my swing in a 3D d'Aquisto type system and fitness questions of how to build my body to hit the ball farther).
  • Dale Hanson
Lately I have been having problems with my irons off the tee. I am hitting well off the fairway and have no major problems with my driver. My assessment is I am playing my ball too far forward in my stance and should return to a middle position. My problem is not looking up. I am simply "skulling" the ball; a low straight shot that goes "god knows where". Am I on the right track? I am planning a day on the driving range working with my middle irons.

Signed up for your "lessons" and purchased the cd. The "lessons" are a joke. I hope the cds are something better.
