I have a question from Jurek Brown about diet and nutrition when playing golf. It’s a good question because it’s really important. It says, “You touched on nutrition and the importance of it to maintaining a good round. Could you tell me what DJ eats when he’s in tournament mode? I do take peanut butter sandwiches and plenty of fruit drinks as you suggest and I have noticed a significant improvement. A little more light here would be appreciated as I am not sure about what I’m burning and what I should eat to ’store.’ I do hope you don’t find this a silly question.”
Silly? Heck no! What’s silly is not eating well enough when you play. Let’s start off with a couple of basics. Before you play you should have a pretty good meal, whether it’s breakfast or lunch or whatever. You want to have that no less than 30 minutes to an hour before you play. You want to eat something that’s high in carbs and protein.
Because why? If you’re playing 18 holes, that’s a minimum of four hours playing golf. You want to have that meal sustain you from start to finish. What you would therefore be doing during a round is to snack, to keep your energy level high enough so you don’t get into low blood sugar where you start to run out of gas. It will hit you before you know it. In many cases you can hit one shot pretty good and by the time you get to the next ball and you’re ready to hit it, you could be going into low blood sugar and not really know it. Then, all of a sudden, wham! You hit a lousy shot and one or two shots later you finally realize your hands are shaking and your body’s shaking and your knees are weak. You say, “Holy Cow,” I’m in trouble. So we want sustainable energy with a good meal.
The other reason why you want to eat that sustainable meal is because once the food goes to your stomach a great amount of the blood being pumped with your heart is going to help digestion. That’s why you only want to snack. If you eat in the middle of a round and wolf a hot dog down or a hamburger or eat a tuna fish sandwich and stuff like that, a big intake of food in one sitting really quickly, like you’d be eating this at the turn, again it’s going to send a lot more blood to your stomach rather than to all the body parts, like your fingers and your feet and your brain. We want to blood to go to parts that a really important playing golf, not so much digestion.
So what do we eat? Well, you want snacks. Peanut butter crackers, cheese crackers are good. Peanut butter sandwiches are great, but I wouldn’t wolf the whole sandwich down in one sitting because we’re back to the issue of blood being pumped to the stomach to digest it.
We want to snack and munch. Bananas are awesome because of the potassium. But I will say this. You mentioned that I mentioned drinking fruit drinks. I don’t know if I ever mentioned fruit drinks because fruit drinks, by their very nature, have a lot of natural sugar in them, never mind a lot of added sugar. You don’t want sugar. Candy bars, or anything to do with sugar, are out of the equation. So you want to stay away from those.
The drinks you want to drink are the sport drinks to supplement water. If it is super hot and you’re perspiring a lot, you’re perspiring out a lot of electrolytes and other chemicals that your body needs which water does not put back in. It hydrates you but doesn’t give you those extra things you’ve lost from your body that you have to have. So you want to drink the sport drinks.
That’s what DJ drinks. He drinks the sport drinks. One of the things they really drink out on Tour is Amino Vital. They give it to them at every tournament. It comes in little plastic packages. You rip it open and pour it into a bottle of water and shake it up. Many times you might even see them when they’re showing players standing around the tee doing it. I’ve seen it done a number of times. They shake it up, they drink it. It’s usually got a lemon flavor. It’s awesome. That would be a good thing to drink when you’re out there.
You also have the sports bars, like Power Bar and others like that, bars that have a lot of nuts in them. Trail mix type bars. I’ve seen a lot of players put trail mix in plastic bags and do that. I’ve seen DJ do it. But stay to the stuff where you munch.
One last good thing to really eat is a lot of nuts. One of the best ones is almonds. If you buy raw almonds at the supermarket, those are great. If you have to buy something in a can that’s full of salt, as I’ve done in the past, I open up the can, I put the nuts in a glass or something to wash off all the salt, I don’t want all that extra salt. Almonds are great. They have protein and they’re long energy lasting.
That’s what you want. You want to eat a little after you’ve had your good meal to sustain you for the whole round, just a little to keep you going. Stay away from sugar. Stay away from candy. Stay away from fruit drinks.

“Surge”. HELP. I was an 8 hdcp playing from more than 6600yds. I tried to change my swing which in retrospect was foolish since I am 62 yrs. old. I can't get my old swing back and can't seem to do a new one. My club pros and I have gone through countless lessons and even they are getting frustrated and perplexed. This has been going on for 6 years. I got so frustrated that I didn't play the last 2 yrs. I have committed to fixing it this year or quitting forever. There have been times when I can hit it very well so it is not a physical thing. I can stand on the range and shank (or hit with my club open) ball after ball. Any suggestions besides trading my clubs for a bowling ball?
Bob
I think I'm trying to swing too fast or perhaps too hard. How fast is AFAP and where does it start? At the top of 3/4 or after the ball is struck?
You're so right about the almonds but so wrong about the salt. Salt is what the body need on a super hot day when you're sweating like a pig. Salted almonds along with the drinks you prescribed are the ticket.
Thanks for the reminder.
Frank
Your information on eating while your play explains why my scoring falls off from the 15th to the 18th hole. We have had an exectionally hot summer, something we are not used to in Alaska. Normal temp would be between 60 and 70 and sunny, this summer we have temp between 80 to 85 and humid. Drinking sports drinks like Gatoraid makes sense.
Thanks, Chuck
Forget about getting an answer to email, although the expressed time for response is 24 hours, I don't think any body is home and is is quite frustrating. The Surge needs to get serious about being in business and get someone to man the computer for customer service issues. The excuse that “email is not a perfect system” is not realistic in today's business invironment.

Bob,
Boy do I feel that pain. I went through the same thing over the last ten years. I am 60 now but for some reason decided 10 years ago to get better for my old age. Things got more twisty and more turny so to speak until eventually I couldn't even swing the club without trying to force it with my body. This PPGS swing method has taken me back to the basics that I started with and played with until I decided to get real good and longer. I played with an abbreviated 3/4 swing more like a punch swing that served me well for a lot of years. But I'm writing to tell you that it took six weeks of hitting plastic balls in my high ceiling garage not to learn PPGS but to forget all the bad habits that I had learned over those ten years. I didn't even bother to go to the range anymore but rather just hit those plastic balls in the garage two or three times a day as I though of new things, until I worked it out. I'm writing to tell you that it will all come together over time as long as you think simplicity and don't try to force it. That is PPGS. By the way, I found that moving the ball forward to a square position with your straight no angle left arm and a nuetral grip, is a basic that helps a lot to eliminate that to the right or left shank looking thing. It's really not a shank. Good Luck
I'm 79 and do not play like I did at 62 and wish I did. You are getting old .
GNC stores carry Amino Vital
Melaluca also has a similar product called Sustain and comes in at least 3 flavors. It comes in little packets that you dump in a 16 oz bottle of water, shake and drink. It also puts the electrolites back into your body. You can purchase it as a member of Melaluca or not. Go to Melaluca.com and search for Sustain. My granddaughter is on the high school golf team and has been using it a couple of years, it really works.
A newbe and still learning PPGS. Bev

Hi Frank,
Perhaps a compromise might be to try some of the lower salt almonds, peanuts, etc.
You are “on the right trak” — sort of. The problem with salt (specially salt TABLETS) is that it MUST enter the intestines before it can be absorbed into the body.
The real “power” of Gatorade (and probably other sports drinks too) – the electolytes that the body really needs – salts of potassium, sinc, magnesium, etc that the body really craves – can be absorbed directly from the stomach.
Therefore, electorlyte replacement is MUCH MUCH faster than with “table salt” (Sodium Chloride). If you must use salted snacks, then start eating them several HOURS before you play — and keep eating them throughout the day.
Here in the Phoenix area desert heat (100F and higher) I always take at least a 32 ounce bottle of Gatorade (preferably the G2, lower sugar type) in my bag, and NEVER pass a water station (about every 2nd or 3rd hole) without drinking about 4 to 6 ounces of water (they have little paper cups of about 3 or 4 ounce size) IF you wait until you feel thirsty, you are probably already dehydrating!
In addition, I always eat a substantial breakfast about 1 to 1 1/2 hours before tee time (I try to play VERY early in the morning) and carry one or two Granola bars in my bag also (the kind with whole grain, peanuts and almonds)
Keep hitting them STRAIGHT and LONG
Amos
How does one judge the speed of greens? I had a 4 putt today and still shot 83. I hope you have some advice I sure could use it.
Thanks
I use Sustain too its very good just maybe a bit fiddly to get in the bottle. Also some pros are selling ” back nine bars ” that are oats and honey and chocolate bits – very tasty. You bite a bit every few holes. Nothing worse than on the last few holes having that Hypo-glycemic out of gas feeling!
Bob my advice would be to practice as much as possible especially before your round of golf practice puts of different distances on the practice greens to get use to the speed of the greens. My opinion is it’s about getting the feel for the greens.
Another great natural nutrition product for endurance was developed for the Daedalus athletes who broke the world record for human-powered flight, pedaling a plane for 72 miles using Shaklee Performance as their only source of energy and fluid…these athletes maintained their endurance for 6 full hours….I have found it great in this summer heat to keep my energy and focus up for my game….check it out at http://bhealthynactiv.myshaklee.com/us/en/produ...

after the ball is struck
I often notice my game takes a dive after stopping at the half way house for snacks.
Marilyn
I have found that dates and figs work best for me they keep the energy there the whole round
Don, I drink an energy drink made from the ACIA Berry that is low glycemic, burns fat and gives me 4 to 5 hours of energy while it converts fat into energy. It is a great way to curb you desire for sugars because it has NO Artificial sugars or regular sugar and will not cause your body to want sweet food like so many of the “energy drinks” out there. It is recommended by the Human Sports Performance Organization, the people who helped that 13 year old climb Mt. Everest. I drink it every time I play golf, I am 65 years young and just shot a 77 at my local course.
Check out http://www.nevada.bfreesystem.com to find out more about the Nuvo Gene Tea and ARG Matrix products. Thanks for your great articles and keep on the road to recovery. If you have any questions, let me know.
Surge,
At 53, with a bad back and a lover of golf, I seriously need to learn your swing. I have been following the discussion that come as e-mails and had decided to buy the program when I am able to afford it. I also am married with 4 kids at home so money is always an issue. Last week during the US open, you advertised the program for $37 and I tried to purchase it. The system was frozen and would not allow me to input my info and purchase the program. I tried all weekend with no success. I also sent 2 e-mails to the main address with no response. I write now hoping your sense of fairness will allow me to purchase the system for the price offered during the open. If not, then I will have to believe you are not what you say you are. I don't believe that but it is time to see some action, not more talk.

I just don't see how your “I didn't get to buy” woes have anything to do with this blog.
Nutrition is very important. I slice two golden delicious apples and then dip them in crunchy peanut butter and eat them jyst before I play. While I am playing I keep unsalted almonds and turkey jerky in my bag and drink at least two gator aide every round, three or four if its hot.
Chuck, its been 105 here in Las Vegas and will be up to 115 in a few weeks.
80-85? Your breaking my sun burned heart. I'd need need a sweater where you are! Enjoy your San Diego quality summer.
Robert
Hi Amos,
You have to love poor Chuck in 85 degree Alaska (see his comment above),
You and I in Arizona and Las Vegas can tell 'em what real heats about.
I'm still playing once or twice a week even in this heat. Do you also get summer rates at many of your courses? After 3pm when it cools off to 101 we play at many great courses here for $25-30 bucks.
Down the middle,
Hope your well,
Robert
Good answer Surge! Thanks for your continuing comments and really good playing tips. As far as snacking, that's just what I eat while playing – a yogurt and fruit beforehand, granola bars with nuts and trail mix! I am going to start drinking sports drinks instead of a lot of water! – Howard
Splhunter is correct. Your lack of clarity may be because Surge does say we should focus on the forward upswing to the “T” finish from the top of the 3/4 backswing. If we do so, the bump and down through the ball part is “automatic”.
Do you have the videos about the PPGS? If so re-watch the ones where Surge wears a yellow shirt and especially all the ones on secret #3 and secret #4 to clearly get it all straight. The AFAP,Poptart, and swing up to a T are all related.
Down the middle,
Robert
I was reading the little debate on some of these posts about the benefit of extra salt intake during exercise. Just out of curiousity I put in the question on the search ask to see what I could find. There are opposing views posted by members of the medical community. One said absolutely that performance was actually enhanced by being on a low salt diet for athletes. Another said exactly the opposite. So I guess I still don't have an answer. The only concensus I could find was that if one had high blood pressure the salt would make that worse.
On another topic. I've been having to fight my way around the course all year. 74 has been about the best score I could post, on a very easy course. Before this year I always shot between 68 and 72 on this course. Today I finally figured out the problem. My hand position at the top of my swing had gotten off and I had no idea. After an easy correction the game seemed awfully easy again. Even my newest nemesis, my R9 driver which I was tempted to throw away as “unplayable”, was very easy to hit today.
It also helps to learn to read grain.
Bingo!! NaCl is not really the primary consideration of replentishment due to sweat. Great response Amos!
hi how yall doin, ive started the PPG in april, its was a change , however i started hitting the ball real well understanding the instruction by the end of may, didnt play for a couple of weeks, and all of a sudden i was slicing again, very frustrating, whats the heck is goin on, after playing a round last week, my buddy said youre wide open at address, which promotes a slice, OPEN IS DEAD, finally figured out out my alignment was way off, Surge if could emphasize the importance of alignment, i think alot of the student will benefit from this , especially if there changing ther swing, as the Surge says dont skip a video, however ALIGNMENT is a very key element, back to swinging okay again, its hard to chang a 20 year old bad habit, but im fighting through it, if youre ever in the PALM Desert area look me up, I met D.J. at Castelli's restaurant ,AT THE Bob Hope C.C. this year, great guy, thanks for all the instructions, and i hope this will help some of u, thanx, nick b.
Surge, thank you for your response regarding Diet Nutrition when Playing Golf, after i sent it i thought theres a strong chance id get laughed out, clearly others will benefit from your input.
Great point about the sports drinks, ill do it!
What happens to me is, often, i have a great hole, and in so much as a walk to the next tee, i can feel 'Shut down', like a draining of energy, but this happens so quick its scary, we are having a great summer here in the UK, temperatures are good 20 Degrees sometimes hotter at the moment, so hydration is a must, i must have misread your initial advice and took it to use fruit drinks, just as well i hate sugar!
Ill have a search for the Almonds and Granola bars and the Gatorade, and ill give it a try, anything to stop this would be a great help.
thank you again
Jurek Brown Uk
Hi,
I am in the opposite position to you I have paid for the $37 program but am still waiting to receive anything at this atage about 3 or 4 weeks later.I would appreciate if Surge reads this something can be done .

Perhaps reading the MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (the #1 question above) would share some light on the situation for you. You don't receive any physical items.
to Robert Meade:
Yes — I too had to “grin” at “poor” Chuck!
And yes — we do enjoy “Summer rates” hree in Phoenix – from late April to October. The best deal that I have found, and on my favorite course too — is $20 Monday and Tueday, all you can play, cart included. It is an older “resort course” (opened in 1913) – -so it is short by todays standards – 6600 from the tips, 6100 from the whites — but very narrow fairways, hard fast smallish greens, and water on 8 holes. Also for this area, lots of tress of all types from cedars, oaks and tall skinny palm trees.
Also, the rates go down during the day — many courses are in the $20 to $30 range in early morning (6 to 8 am) but drop to $ 15 or $18 in the mid moring, afternoon times.
I recently played a Scottsdale course that costs over $100 in the winter time for $30 after noon.
Keep hitting them STRAIGHT and LONG

I'm not a big fan of sports drinks like gatorade or powerade as they are just sugar water. Read the label. Water, high fructose corn syrup… Then look at Coke, carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup… Same thing. The ingredients are listed in order of use, thus it's mostly water followed by HFCS, flavors, colors etc. Check your energy bars while you're at it. If you doubt, search high fructose corn syrup, some think it's worse than sugar. As for salt, always go with sea salt.
There are various low sugar sports drinks on the market. All of the benefits, none of the blood sugar spike. It does take a little checking of ingredient lists to get the right product.
Question: Do you know how many bananas you would have to eat to add potasium to your diet?
Answer: A train load!!!!!! I don't think your golf cart is big enough.
I can shoot 70 some days and then up jumps a 90… I witness the same let down on tour (not the same numbers, but simular results..Go Home) Where does the golf swing GO? Also how do you prevent / eliminate that one BIG Number (bad hole) that can ruin the entire round?
Surge,
I love your wonder system which I have been employing now for 4 mos. One problem I am having is on my follow through. I am right handed and tend to fall back away from the ball so I'm not sure why that is happening? Hopefully you can trouble shoot this for me.
Thanks in advance, Sharon
Marilyn,
You might rethink two matters: 1) your choice of snack and how much you eat; and 2) the amount of time you take between the 9th green and 10th tee.
1) Consider the remarks made by Surge with regard to the “what” and be sure not to overdo it.
2) My experience is that the longer you take for your “break,” the longer it takes to regain form.
Good luck,
Michael
If your weight gets to the outside of your front foot, you won't fall backwards. The bump initiates the transfer but you must continue to turn through and get to your front side. When you can lift your back toe off the ground as you hold your backswing, you'll know you've gotten there.
Great information about on course nutrition. I am an insulinn dependant diabetic for the last 45 years so I have struggled with maintaining proper blood sugars during my playing times. Small continual snacks are truly the answer. This is very hard for most people to accomplish because they are used to eating or drinking til they feel full, which is a big mistake. One further note to other diabetics with the new inuslin pumps, what an improvement to set the pump to deliver 60% for the next 5 hours and solve the low sugars that used to find every round at some point. Those with the pumps will understand this terrific advancement in living with the disease. Again, thanks for the nutrition tips. Tom J.
Dear Surge; Afew years ago I had a ladder accident . I have a very weak left wrist, and at impact my r-wrist takes over and causing a cutting across the ball. Any suggestions on hitting the ball streighter
Hey Surge,
Even better make it an almond butter sandwich. Really great stuff there.
I am a once a week golfer now. I played in the high eighties when I was in my thirties (thirty years ago). I am trying to apply your theories and have not really improved ….yet. A few more trips to the range and I will hopefullysee some improvement. In the mean time…my clubs are almost forty years old. Top of the line back then. My driver was custom made and was my favorite club for years. What should I be looking for now that I've lost strenght and flexibility?
I find the advice on nutrition very interesting. It is hot here in Texas these days and I seem to wilt with 2 or 3 holes left to play. I drink water and gatoade but have not been taking the correct munch food. Tomorrow I am going with peanut butter sandwitches on white bread.
There was a blog on club fitting a week or so ago. Get a good fitting to start with.
Keep it simple …. Make sure the flex and length match your swing. Get lofts that maximize your ability. Don't be afraid to add hybrids and high lofted woods to your bag if they provide you with the yardage and accuracy you need.

great suggestion and comments about sugar not good anytime thanks
Another good drill, when you're getting ready for a round, is to putt to the edges of the practice green. In other words, instead of putting to a whole on the practice green, where you have been speed and direction that you are thinking about, practice putting longer putts to the edge of the green, where you're only concerned with speed. You'd be surprised… if you kept track of your putting stats, how often you missed more than a foot right or left of the hole, vs. how much you miss your putts short and long… you'd realize that “speed kills” as they say. Get your speed right and you'll eliminate a lot of 3 putts.
Dear surge
As a avid fan of the PPGS I had to prove point to my golfing buddy that your system does work, and more so for the over sixties club.I played round using my old method of the full turn and shot 100 Went back couple of days later and used the PPGS method and shot 80.In both rounds putting strokes was equal.I think I won the day and a new fan

Don,
I have always drank a lot of water on the course but very seldom have I used the Sports drinks. Even though I was hydrating with water I can now understand why I still had the fade out relative to my energy level. I dramk one during the 2nd 9 in a recent Golf Channel Amateur Tour tournament this past weekend and I did notice that my energy level was better.
Where can I get the “Amino Vital”?
Hap Hazard
Thanks for the info for Amin Vital
Your article on a real golf menu is great. Thank you for the info. I just love almonds and snack on them thru out most days. They sure keep my appetite down to not eat large meals.
Bob,
Putting was the very last thing I actually learned in this game eventhough I had been putting the entire time I have golfed.
Here's something I finally learned, FINESS, line up the mark on your golf ball with the line on your putter and then only try to match the two lines.
I have found lately that a shorter put is better than a longer putt, in otherwords I find coming up short pays off better than going by the hole?
When I put these two things togeather I dropped 10 strokes or more and thats the truth and the whole truth so help me.
Rod
Hay surge great answer!!!
Iam a diabetic and low blood sugar is a fight on the course. This drink mix you are talking about might be the very thing that could help. Where would you recomend tha I could get this from?
Ken
I agree with bananas for this — individually wrapped, hermetically sealed, readily available, and inexpensive. Great stuff! Living in Florida, I just bring 3 along on hot days, 2 on cooler days. What I have found is the the perspiring out of potassium impacts my good judgment even more than anything physical. I eat them after holes 9, 12, 15. Bananas are terrific!
Surge:
Thanks for restoring both my enthusiasm and instilling a proper golfing technique. Working with it couple of months now, and it's amazing, though still a way to go to carry it from range to green. I would like to thank the many “posters” of suggestions and helpful insights. For instance, over twenty years of Myths, confusing and controverial lessons including “camps”, my instructors invariably emphasized: Start the swing with: Turn your shoulders! Never: Turn your hips! A perfect way to set up for the classic over-the-top swing, which I have fought since the beginning. One of your 'posters' suggested starting the back swing with: your HIPS! Thank you, you know who you are…you just solved years of 'power fades' and pulls! Comments from folks concerning other problems shared by we golfers have been enlightening. I would like to add one of my own. Shanking, particularly when beginning practice with irons. A drill that works wonders is to set up two balls, one in normal position and a second several inches beyond/opposite the first, then go after the normal/inside ball. A couple of dozen will keep you honest! My general observation from experience is to always read the manual. No matter how long you/we have been playing golf, a proper review of basics is almost mandatory and it contains great insights. If you are trying to use Surges' works on the cheap, you are saving… what, one green fee? Don't be a cheater. DVD's. A few of my friends have the ability to land fast little airplanes on big boats, but have no interest in computers so their clocks all blink 12:00. If you don't care to figure out how to download and copy the lessons to blank DVD's, it's just a trick, bite the bullet and ask someone for help. Computer geeks love to show off. Thanks Surge, we older fellows have to deal with the aging process as best we can, and best of luck and bounces to D.J.
Great Post!
And if you are retired military thank you for your service.
Google the product and it will give you several choices/dealers. On my
computer I just high lite Amino Vital and Google it and get instant info.

Sharon on page 88 of the foundation manual, Surge says:
“the downswing is suppose to start with
the legs and hips laterally shifting forward, causing the spine and head to tilt
slightly to the right behind the ball”. Try to agressively move hip and leg
toward the target, and you should have no more problems. The old
“fire and fall back” is usually caused by swinging out and over with the
shoulders pulling your center of gravity off of the ball, causing the imbalance
which forces your body to try to regain equilibrium by falling back on the back
foot.

Bananas are a good thing to put in the bag, along with a high energy drink and some chocolate. Nuts, especially cashews, hit the mark. Golfers MUST think about nutrition as if they were actually diabetic.
In the area of nutrition and golf (and great comments from the Surge, by the way) and exercise, it's my humble opinion that more of those who can should be walking the courses. I know there are a lot of guys who want to get in a quick eighteen and get home. But to me most of that defeats the purpose of golf, which is exercise and a great game. Nothing irritates me more than the guy going like a jet plane through the course in a golf cart.
I agree. I saw a guy I know actually jump out of his cart and hit the ball before his cart quit rolling.
Almonds definately work, granola bars do too, but not too many more like a munch after a handfull of almonds, the Sports Drink, works too, Bannanas seem to have improved muscle soreness i used to get, one day i had to think about what was different, thanks for the advice.
It seems to be working for me
Jurek UK
nothing irritates me more than having a group of walkers back up an entire golf course. i walk around my neighborhood for my excerise. you shoud try walking in a place that does not slow other people down.
