Physical Limitations

- Audio version at the end of this post –

The PPGS can find adjustments that will cure the problem.

ScottW says:

Don, I am an occasional golfer with a somewhat unique swing issue. I’ve got some titanium hardware in my lower back which has dramatically altered my ability to stand, address and swing properly. Because of this, what were once straight drives are now hooking almost exclusively–even when aiming far left of target. Any suggestions?

The Surge says:

Scott, it appears from your explanation of your situation, the first issue we have to address is your setup, since the titanium hardware in your lower back has altered your ability to stand and address the ball.  Since the main premise of the PPGS is “The setup determines the motion,” we have to start an evaluation of your hitting hooks with your setup, which has changed.

Since you don’t mention how your posture at address has changed, I will have to make an assumption that you now have to stand with your upper body more erect as compared to bending over at the waist.  This means you are standing much closer to the ball and your arms are hanging more straight down and closer to your legs.  This can cause a problem with your hips and legs being in the way of your arms swinging the club to impact.  I suspect this may be the case since you mentioned you have tried aiming far left of the target, opening your setup.

If that is the issue then we have to figure out how you can clear your hips and legs but not spin out or rotate through impact too soon, too fast and too much.  We have to figure out how you can transition better and have a straight unobstructed path to the ball to hit straight drives as well as all you other clubs.

I suspect, if anything, the hardware in your lower back is likely slowing down your transition.  If that is happening, you are likely not clearing your hips and are, in fact, hanging back and doing what is called a reverse weight shift.  The weight stays on the back foot in the transition, actually shifting farther back as the hips and shoulders turn and the arms swing the club toward the ball.  The arms collapse around the torso, closing the club face and the shot is a pull or hook.

My setup adjustment suggestion starts with a question.  How do you place your feet at address?  Are they pointing straight forward perpendicular to the aiming line or flared outward 30 degrees, as the PPGS setup recommends?  If they are perpendicular to the aiming line, my suggestion is to flare them both outward 30 degrees as the PPGS setup calls for.  The key is both feet must always have the toes touching the parallel toe line when flared.

The flared left/forward foot should help you clear your forward side smoother and faster allowing your arms and hands to swing the club straight into the ball and hit straighter shots.  Note: It should only take a few practice swings to re-program your timing and balance to impact and, most importantly, to a dynamically balanced T – Finish.

If flaring the forward foot helps, then you can also experiment with even a little more flare to see if that makes the swing even better.  Your balance, ball striking, direction and flight pattern will determine how much flare is correct for you.  At some point, too much flaring of the front foot will cause loss of balance and control of your swing, and your ball striking and flight will also deteriorate.  At that point, revert back to and play with the last flared position that worked well.

The mission statement of the PPGS is: “To help every golfer build the best setup and swing they are physically and mentally able to do for their abilities or liabilities, to maximize the laws of physics and physiology.”

You now have physical limitations placed on your body movement.  It is amazing how subtle adjustments, like flaring the forward foot in your setup, can allow easier, smoother, “less stressful” and more powerful movement that will improve your balance and swing for better ball striking, and bring enjoyment back to playing golf.

    Don,

I have very bad knees, especially the left. I currently have a 4.5 handicap and can't seem to get past the mid to upper 70s. I have NOT been using the PPGS as yet until I can figure out what adjustments to make for my knee problems. As it is right now, I generate power with a much too long swing which can, on occasion, cost me control just to generate any sort of power. Also, I feel like I should be generating much more power than I do. Even at 52, I am still strong. My left knee issue can make it difficult to transition to my left side when I try to apply power. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Bruce Jones: Obviously, I don't know your complete condition, and therefore am unfamiliar with your reasons for needing the surgery. That being said, as a student of chiropractic, I would strongly urge you to at least have a consultation and preliminary examination done by a competent, experienced chiropractor before finalizing your decision to have surgery. If pain is the primary problem, or even secondary to an injury, chiropractic therapy (meaning a regimen of care over several months, or even a year or longer), WILL reduce your pain, and by improving the nerve impulses from your nervous system to the affected area, enable the area to heal itself more efficiently. Nerve compression from spinal misalignment (generally called subluxations in the industry) can cause a myriad of problems, from mild headaches to severe heart dysfunction, depending on the location in the spine and the severity of the compression. Recent studies have even shown that an Atlas adjustment (an alignment of the first cervical vertabra, just below the base of the skull) will lower blood pressure significantly in hypertensive patients. (A second, larger clinical trial is underway.) A VP of the school was scheduled for a double lung and heart transplant, and after receiving adjustments (as many as one a day at the beginning) he has outlived his prognosis by 8 years, with no surgery, and his heart has returned to normal size. It may seem incredible, and it is certainly amazing.

Once again, please seek out a chiropractor and at least have a thorough evaluation done. You may not need surgery, and who really wants to get cut open. You may email me at JeffroDH@hotmail.com if you have any questions.

Hi Don, Just a comment to all the guys facing back surgery or have had back injurys. I am 51 years old and In April this year I suffered a broken neck along with damage to 7 other vertebre from my L-4 to C-5 in a motorcycle offroad racing accident. As a result had to have surgery to fuse C-5-6-7 vertebres together. Shortly after the surgery found a fantastic physical therapist who understood the importance of having a strong core along with building flexability to aid in recovery. I now have a loss of strength in my right hand, numb thumb, 1st and 2nd fingers, along with numbness in my left leg from my waist to my left knee. With the therapist and a book I found at a local book store on pilates for golf, which one of the key to pilates is strengthening your bodys core along with flexability excersises my recovery has been remarkable. As advise to the other people asking questions, seek out a good sports therapist that really understands body mechanics and will guide you to a recovery level close to or above where you were. I was told by my surgeon that I would probably need surgery to correct the issues with my lower L-4-5 damage, but with the excercises my therapist came up with along with the pilates core and flexability excercises that he thought would make a diffrence I have no more lower back pain. The numbness in my left leg is much better. The PPGS has me playing my 10th round of golf in two months, 2nd in a week without ANY back pain at all!!!, My game is slowly improving as I understand it's going to be at least another 3-4 months before I really have a consistant swing. Don and his golf swing training program have given me the drive to set a goal of playing some amateur golf tournaments next year. I'm thrilled to be above ground let alone be able to play golf. I'm thankfull every day I get up in the morning so guys don't give up, look at all your options, concentrate on recovery, do the excercises, ask the questions about what flexability excercises you "can" do while recovering. Thanks again Don!

    Hi Don,
I am a gret believer in your system and would say my game has improved considerably so thanks a million for that. I am 54 years young and have just had an arthroscopy to my left knee. I am right handed. I was off crutches the day after my op and can walk with minimal pain. When do you think it would be ok to get back out on the course? My op was last Wednesday and the pysio gave me 10/10 for post op movement which I believe was due to extensive exercising pre op. Thanks.
  • I'd say feet coming off the ground is because your putting to much power into it or your swing is far to elaborate. Setup is key, if you have a handicap or not, you have to find what works for you best given your condition.

    Hi Don,
I bought your PPGS and I shot the lowest score of my life (79) and I consistenly shot below my handicap (15). That was 3 months ago but now I play like a 24 handicap. Why? I topped my drive, I topped my second shot and even my old slice coming back.it getting worse and worse. Is it because I think too much of the swing mechanical during my swing? Please help me Don.

As a response to some of your fans with limited physical abilities, I would like to add my two cents worth. As a youngster, I developed Pott's Disease which is caused by Tuberculosis of the Spine. After corrective surgery at the age of 9 which required that the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Lumbar verterbrae to be fused I have had a portion of my lower back which cannot bend. When I started to play golf at the age of 14 (I am 68) now, I had to make adjustments to my swing which in time incorporated some of which you now use in you PPGS method especially in the set up portion. I learned to take the backswing with my left arm and with the minimum use of my right arm which just held on and assisted without effort. I took the club back and quickly took it straight up as my left hand past the right foot as you instruct. The downswing is then dominated by my left had pulling the club down and throught the ball and quickly rises to a finished position up above the left side of my head between my head and left shoulder. I feel I use minimum body motion. I learned to play most of my shots off the middle of my stance with just a slight foreward postion for the long irons and slightly more foreward for the woods but still off the left foot. This would be considered further behind what would be normally suggested. I have a lower ball flight but with accuracy. I get a lot of roll with the woods and long irons. The middle and upper irons have higher flight patterns and I am less prone to hook the ball. I get good distance although I am an old codger swings a little different but who loves golf. Your method encorporates much of what I have learned in the last 54 years of playing golf and it has served me well and I hope to continue playing until the end. Congratulations on your assistance to all of those who play with pain for it does help to reduce pain and help one to play longer, even with a disability like some of us have.

    Hi Surge,

Getting back to your "lessons in the flesh" do you ever get the chance to travel down under (Australia) as I am a big fan of your PPGS and it would be great to find out if I am performing your system correctly ? :-)
I have been using this method for about two months now and it is transformed my whole game. I found that when I do hit the occaisional off line shot 99% of the time its alingment, not the toe line for me but the shoulders. I know you you advocate setting the club by leading in with your right side first (right hander) but I find it easier to set the club on the aiming line then take my stance around where I aiming the club ( I seem to be able to get a more consistent alingement). Should I persist with this set up or try to go with stepping in with your right side as you favour?
Thanks for transforming my game and allowing me to enjoy my time on the Golf course instead of pounding balls and practising faults at the driving range.
    Best regards.
    Gary.

    Hello

I am a leftie on a higher handicap and my husband keeps telling me I take one of my feet of the ground unbeknown to me when I swing - he wonders if I am standing wrong or is it just that I try to put so much effort into my swing it just happens.

It is definitely hampering my golf so hope you can help me.

    Thanks.

    Hello

I have what doctors call "drop foot" ( left one) due to the damage of sciatic nerve, I like to improve my swing
  • I can relate to this guy. I hurt my back playing football in 1972. Ever since then the only way I can properly work my hips is from a fairly aggressive open stance, otherwise I struggle getting off of my right side. Flaring the left toe helps but dropping the left foot back and opening up my stance has been the only solution. The key is to take PPGS and adjust it just a little for your physical issues. http://www.aboutjuniorgolf.com
