Day 8: Inside Out Swing To Fix Your Slice

This text will be replaced

Today’s tip, the Myth of the Inside-Out Swing.

Amateurs are often taught this swing path as a “quick fix” to cure the outside-in swing path that’s causing their big slices… and block right shots… and sometimes pulls and hooks.

And they just end up playing that unfortunate game I call “Army Golf”.

You know the drill… Left! Right! Left! Right!

Whenever I see an amateur swinging from the inside out, I ask them: “If you swing a baseball bat that way, or hit a tennis ball that way, where will the ball go?”

Their answer?

“Off to the right”, of course.

I always add, just to make a strong visual point, that if you put a ball on the ground and hit it with your nose, with an inside out swing path, it’ll go to the right.

And when you’re just sitting there… thinking about what I’m saying… rather than standing on the tee with your bag of bad habits, it all makes perfect sense.

The answer is to swing straight back and straight through.

Don’t swing inside-out to “correct” a slice, or any other problem. Two wrongs don’t make a right. FIX that slice – don’t just cover it.

Otherwise, it’s like always taking pain killers for your headache… and continuing to beat your head with a rock!

Try this, just to get the motion:

Assume your setup position, then toss a ball underhand, like skipping a rock on a lake. Swing your arm straight back and through and it goes straight forward.

That is your swing path … PERIOD!

That’s a wrap for today.

If you want even MORE ways to hit the golf ball straight as you can point… that are used by everyone from total golf “newbies” who have never picked up a club to PGA Pros who play under intense pressure (with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line every time they swing the club)… then check out my Peak Performance Golf Swing Video Series today.

This swing is no “fluke.”

It’s based on science and the laws of human body mechanics — that never change.

In fact, it works so consistently (for so many people) it has been seen in prestigious magazines, newspapers and TV shows — like Golf Digest, Golf Tips Magazine, Men’s Fitness, Golf.com, Senior Golfer Magazine, Golf Week, The Golf Channel, PGA Magazine, Executive Golfer, The Boston Globe and numerous radio shows around the world.

Best part?

My DVDs let you learn the swing at a small fraction of what my private students pay.

Why not check it out today, while it’s still on your mind?

You have nothing to lose whatsoever. In fact, if after just 2 buckets of balls you don’t shave at LEAST 5 strokes off your game, it’s free.

You can get the nitty-gritty details at:

See you tomorrow.

I have just started to practice the PPGS and most of my trouble is between my ears. I think about all the lessons and want to revert back to a familiar swing, even though it was not consistent. Thank you for your persistence on drilling the fundamentals like set up and alignment. I just know I will improve with this proven system.

Praying that you are healing well!

You keep talking about golf club lengths, what length should they be for a lady who is only 5'. I am almost 67yrs and have just taken up golf so obviously a lot to learn. I am finding your videos very useful and already picking up tips. I am a very competitive person.
  • Steve Smith
    Sandra,

I really can't answer your question but if you scroll to the top of this page where the search bar is and type in MYTH BUSTER #1, MYTH BUSTER #2, ect. up through #5 this series should educate you somewhat on this subject. Actually if you post this question again use your wrist to floor measurement instead of your height. The only reason I am answering is your post was getting near the bottom of the recent comments (in the scroll to the right) and it might have gone unanswered. Only a club fitter could answer your question properly.
    Hope this helps.

Don , I play off 13 . I was off 7 in my 20s but am now 66 and very erratic . I have put into practice your tips and find that the " Flat Wrist " has made a big improvement . Unfortunately I have been experiencing some pulled shots and a number of sliced shots , especially on the longer clubs .
Have you any comments on what I might be doing wrong . I was delighted initialy with the results but feel at a loss as how to cure the problem
  • Hugfjstad
very interesting & informative your tips,I am heading for eighty (2 more) yrs, also hosp. for valve replacement, hopefully very soon, but when I am cured I will purchase your dvds. Thank you Hugo Fjastad.

Don, How do you suggest starting the downswing, the ground up...feet, legs, hips, or hands/arms body will follow. What creates less pressure on the lower back. I have lower back problems. Thanks. Jerry Harbauer

I LOVE this guy! I watched this last night, and couldn't WAIT to get out of work to test it. I hit about a dozen balls, and about a dozen balls went about 250-280 yards, straight as an arrow. Thank you Mr. Trahan.
  • Richard Alexander
    Dear MIr. Trahan

First comment was a man asking for lesson #7, I also didn't receive lesson #7 & #6 also. Thanks for all the tips. Hope they help.
  • Harold
My lessons skipped from 4 to 7. Is there anyway that I can get 5,6,& 7. I am really enjoying these videos. They are simple and understandable.
  • Stacy
I did not get lesson #7. Skipped from 6 to 8.
Also I have yet to receive my DVDs in the mail. Can you pls tell me when they will get here? It has been about 3 weeks.

Catchers mitt is such a good tool. I watched another novice like me and she was just flogging the ball. You could see her mind working on all the things she had to do right. She has a very nice swing waiting to happen.
Then I stood behind and made some little marks where my catcher's mitts would be and cleared my mind and hit a 5 iron over the 200 yard marker I was aiming at. Mind you I had hit 20 balls previous to that one but they were all coming closer and definitely hitting in 2 or 3 bowling alleys not a ball park.

Hi...Just wanted to say thank you for the free golf lessons. I went to the driving range today after viewing 7 of your lessons. I honestly hit the ball straighter than I ever have in my life. Before when my shots went straight I couldn't repeat the action time after time. With the methods that I've learned so far from your free lessons, I hit more shots straight and did so consistently. I find that the 3/4 turn didn't seem to give me as much distance, but at this point, I'll sacrifice distance for straight.

    Thanks, and get well soon.

What happened to Lesson # 7? My lessons jumped from 6 to 8.

I had a question on this swing method. I haven't bought the package yet but am planning on it this weekend. I was watching a video of Don discussing the swing on the golf channel. In it he mentioned that there is no wrist bend. But when I watch a video of DJ in slo mo at the 2009 masters (youtube) I clearly see an early wrist break. I ask because I am used to making this same wrist break. Why the difference or am I missing something?
  • mike
Humm ... when I swing outside to inside (shoulders not square at address) I get a right hook later especially with the driver or 2 iron. As you practice you can tell a lot about your swing by the size, shape and direction of your divots. I found it helpful to use a steeper swing for irons and a flatter sweeping swing for the driver, but again everyone is different. Swinging straight seems easier for me than correcting lazy bent arms, rising up head or dipping down body that can cause fat/thin shots.

Hey anyone who has purchased the full ‘peak performance golf swing' DVDs to download to your PC. I have sent (emailed direct) several messages to Mr Trahan asking this simple question but I get zero response.

Question is: what are the file sizes of the HD DVDs available to download after you have paid your $67 or whatever??

    And are they worth it?

    All sensible responses appreciated.

    Thank you

Wow, Thanks surge. I can't wait to get your tip of the day, I have gone to the range after every day tip and i can honestly say my swing hag gotten more consistent and the ball is getting more distance and even raised my percentage of straight shots. I still got a ways to go but I was all over the place before I watched these tips. Thanks again

  • Toni Sanguinetti
Yes. One of the great tips and I enjoyed your presentation. A friend once said to me, "Try bowling." Perhaps I should have. All makes a lot of sense. It will become my #1 swing thought, and maybe my only swing thought. Hit my longest and straightest drive last week thinking about that very move. Thing is, I don't often think about it. I'd like to get to the point were I don't have to think about it. Can't develop "muscle memory" if you don't use brain memory. Why is this game so difficult and painful yet so many of us seem to love the torture.
  • Jack G,
This is a good tip. I was hitting slices so bad on the practice range, that virually 50 or more balls wound up OVER the side safety netting, and most ended up on part of a putting green WAY FAR AWAY!...needless to say, it was embarassing !..I tried closing my stance, and strenghtening my grip ( where your knuckles show on your gloved hand)....the method work a little, since you end up closing the clubhead. But a friend of mine said that this was meant to be a "temporary fix"....my swing was definately over the top !.....I had a chance to try your method, WOW what a differance ! My drives are straight, with a little nice draw, and I got some decent distance.

Why do some golfers ware a glove?
  • Q
All of these lessons seem to be pure genius. Granted I haven't been to the course to test them yet because of weather and a back injury, but all the lessons make sense. These are all the same common sense thoughts and natural swing ideas that I intuitively used when I first started playing golf. I was very new to the game but I had a very repeatable swing and very consistent results. I was still a very high handicapper because getting better takes time and work.

Then I started reading golf magazines and watching golf TV and listening to "expert" friends and I found out I was doing everything all "wrong." I started taking lessons and being twisted and turned into all kinds of uncomfortable and unnatural positions and movements. I have long felt that many of the traditional swing ideas were not right, at least for me, but almost everyone else seemed in agreement. So I've struggled for years to use the traditional golf swing and get better. I've been up and down with no seeming improvement from year to year. Using my original swing I went from a beginner shooting over 130 to breaking 100 consistently and having great length with my drives. After getting lessons, I've been stuck with an inconsistent swing that keeps me getting lessons and has me stuck in the same 100 area year after year. I've also had many low back problems. when healthy enough to play, I pop pain pills before every round. I strongly believe this is a result of the unnatural swing, as you have described.

I can't wait to get out there this year and try your techniques. I'm excited to be going back to something that feels much more natural.
