Importance of Keeping “Stats.”

The Importance of Keeping “Stats.”

NOTE:

One of Don’s young students, who will be going to college on scholarship next year, was concerned about more birdies. He’s getting close to being a scratch player. Don’s advice follows – but it’s not just for advanced players. It makes sense for EVERY golfer.

As to your not making enough birdies, that comes from hitting more fairways and greens, hitting it closer and, obviously, making putts.

You need to start keeping extensive stats on all your rounds, both practice and tournament.

Stats should include fairways and greens hit.

When missed, track where the misses are to see if you have trends, like left/right, and sometimes for fairways: are they straight or doglegs left or right.

You may find, for example, that you drive well on right to left but poorly on left to right.

It could be the shape of the hole, alignment problems, or maybe you need to work on a cut or fade to shape the drive to move left to right.

Your stats might reveal that maybe you miss hit one club way more than others.

This is a clue to get that club checked.

If you are missing greens consistently left or right, the lie angle may be off, or the shaft flex does not match the rest of the set.

Missing short or long, the loft may be wrong.

If you want to take your game to the next level, you need stats.

The more you break them down, the more you find your strengths and weaknesses and what needs more work, and for clubs, what needs to be checked or changed.

When I deal with good players, and they say or complain that they have problems, I will ask about their stats.

They better have them.

I feel that my time and energy to work with them is compromised if they don’t know what is going on with their game.

When I play, practice or tournaments, I run my stats through my head driving home or to the hotel.

After every round DJ plays on Tour, the first thing I go to on the computer is his stats.  When I talk to him, I know what to compliment, and what to ask about.  His answers lead to my recommendations on what he needs to work on.

Not knowing your stats is like not knowing the balance in your checkbook.

If you are a serious player, then you need to keep serious stats.

And if you want to dominate the game — no matter who you play with, whether college athletes or just your buddies in your next foursome — make sure you have a swing that works in perfect harmony with your natural body mechanics and the laws of physics and gravity.

You can learn — in just two buckets of balls — the swing I teach at:

This swing (along with keeping good stats) will dramatically increase your chances of getting more birdies.

Oh, and speaking of stats… my son DJ just happens to be leading the PGA Tour in one incredibly important statistically area.

Keep an eye out for an email on that some time this week.

Good golfing…..and…..go low.

Thanks for all the other useful stuff that you are sending.
    Thanks again

Thanks for emails and I want to get your DVD's but I am left handed and hate having to read and watch video's and it's for right handed. Any just for lefties.
    Thanks, Rick

To Dillon from Ireland: Happy Saint PatricK's Day!
If you presently can hit drives 250 to 275 yards, with a regular shaft and still are able to add more clubhead speed, I would say that you need to look into and test drive some stiff shsfts. Epecially if you are already having accuracy problems or if increasing speed then brings them. Don
  • Don Trahan, PGA...The Surge!
To David Dawson: Regarding learning the distance you hit every club. Only you can do that. When you hit a pretty good/average shot with a club, you have to walk it off, or if you have an rangefinder, shoot it and write it down to know that distance for that club. You need to do this with every club. When your swing improves, you need to re-do this to keep on top of your accurate distance numbers. Don
  • Don Trahan, PGA...The Surge!
TO Jeff Waits: Good to hear that your game is well and you have reached your all time lowest score. Keep it up...even par and then sub par are not far away.
I am humbled that you used my mental memory tips to teach scripture. If it works for life and golf, it surely will work to learn about and honor God.
  • Don Trahan, PGA...The Surge!
To Donald: If you try to keep your hands in front of the ball through impact you will be holding on too long (like pushing the club through) and will likely hit blocks and slices if not thins and maybe tops. I would say you need to to get your left hand more active in trying to swing the clubhead through the ball into the forward mitt and up and over your right shoulder into the T-Finish.
  • Don Trahan, PGA...The Surge!
To John Lawrence: You ask about cocking the wrists when parallel at the top of backswing as being wrong. One of the major teachings in golf is cocking the wrists for power. It obviously works as many if not most players including tour players do it. I believe cocking the wrists is a major problem of increasing error in the swing as well as power loss. I believe according to physics and physiology there is a better way, a limited turn -3/4 length backswing. I disagree with cocking wrists at all in the swing, teaching there is no wrist cocking, which is the primary way to have a 3/4 backswing. The arms rotate as they lift. Firm wrist reduce stress, strain and error. I and my son, DJ, and all my students swing with no wrist cock. The DVD's and swing manual explain it all simply and clearly. Don

To Bill, 63 years old. lefty: You say that your left hand is out of the siwng, It gets stuck and you hit hooks. I will conclude stuck means it is getting behind your torso, and then when you clear out to pull it around your body, it flips over releases and you hit the hook. If this is the case, the answer is you are turning too much, getting he arms and club behind the toe line. The Peak Performance Swing is a Limited turn (70 degrees) to the toe line only then lift up to a 3/4 lenght backswing. In other words straight back and up...comes straight down then up. The backswing is like skipping a rock on a lake...no big turn needed.
  • Don Trahan, PGA...The Surge!
To Mark K. Westrick: The DVD's will help absolutely help you. They work for everybody regardless of size, shape, and age. They also really help any player with physical limitations or problems like bad back, or knees. They are based on swinging the club in harmony with physics and within the designs of the movement of the human body, the way God created things to happen.
  • Don Trahan, PGA...The Surge!
To Jack: You ask about spining your clubs. I would say anything that will make your clubs/shafts more the same and consistent has to be good if done correctly.
  • Dillon
    Greetings from Ireland.

Don, you are a legend!! I have dramtically reduced my scores from averaging 95s to 80-85 in the last few months and it's down to your great tips!
One question. I use a taylormade burner 2009,regular shaft and its get me around the 250-275 yards. Do you think that i should consider increasing my clubhead speed to get more distance off the current shaft or get a stiffer shaft and swing smoothly. I know that the faster the clubhead speed with a good impact with the ball, it travels farther! Would appreciate any kind advice or comment.
  • David Dawson
    Hi Don,
I just got a set of clubs from my father. The shaft is graphite. I only occasionally golf as for exercise and the male bonding aspect of the men I would golf with. I wished I COULD do more practice so I can use this set of clubs. I haven't got a clue when teeing off according to the distance which club to use can you help me determine which club to use as for fare ways; etc.,etc..
  • Jeff Waits
Hi Don, I'm enjoying the new e-mails and I've really enjoyed the DVD's. I've pretty much ignored all other swing philosophy since working with you at Defuskie in '04. It really simplifies things for me to only follow your swing tips. Proud to tell you I shot my all time low last Thursday - 74! Its really helped to review everything I learned with the DVD's - I even used your "mental memory" tips in a Sunday school lesson making a parallel to remembering scripture. Oh well I guess that makes me a disciple in more than one way!
  • Donald
I'm left handed in golf only. I have a hard time getting distance with my drives. I've been told that i don't keep my hands in front of the clubhead as i swing through the ball losing clubhead speed. How do you practice this?
    Thank you.
    Don

Hi Don I have watched the free video's with great interest.I am 69 years old and have decided to start to play golf again after 30 years.I have watched slow motion swings of all the top golfers. They all seem to cock their wrists and and start their downswing with the club parallel to the ground. Are you saying that this is wrong? I was never a good golfer and am keen to try anything
  • Bill
Iam 63 years old and carry a 11hcp. I play left handed always have. Even though iam play left handed iam right handed, i do everything right handed but golf. I cannot get my left hand out of the swing. I get the club stuck, and hit pull hooks. I try to stand open and hit a cut, I still cannot get the left hand out of the swing. Any suggestions would be helpful. I ordered your tapes today. I hope they help. Would like to talk to you on the phone sometime. 573 999 9389 this is my cell phone. Look forward to getting your tapes. I did not get back a conformation on my order. Thanks Bill Nixon

I haven't seriously golfed in many years. Just an occasional scrambel. they take me along for my putting.Even though I hardly golf, I'm still better at putting than them. It's the rest of my game that sucks!Even though I'm 54 yrs.old, I'm a very competive individual. It just kills me that I can't hit that ball straight off the drive and not hit the rest of my clubs like I know I could if I had the proper instuction. My health is good and my phyisical ability is better than most guys my age.Your dvd's sound almost to good to be true. Can they really help someone like me?
  • Jack
    Don,
Im thinking about buying a spine tool and realiening all of my clubs. What is your thought about spining clubs?

    Thanks, Jack
