How do they do it?

I received an e-mail on June 9th from a club manufacturer who specializes in woods, with a super offer to all PGA professionals. They broke into the club business on Tour building 3 woods, and they really built a super 3 wood. I have had one in my bag for I believe around 4 years. I got it out of DJ’s trunk (he had two in there). Since it was made on Tour for him, it was way too stiff for me and I had to have it re-shafted. The head looks great, is unbelievably solid, and with the right shaft I bomb it straight, with good height. Off the tee I can almost keep up with my driver.

This company is really trying to break into the driver market and the offer was for one of their two models at basically half price, and 1 per pro. I hit the driver at the PGA Show in January at Demo Day. It felt solid and had good high trajectory. Since a pro can’t have enough drivers, even if I had to buy it, this deal was the next best thing to free and too good to pass up. I decided that my 3 wood needed a matching mate and in less than 30 seconds from reading the offer, I was dialing for drivers to order one.

When I got the service rep, he confirmed my PGA membership number and info was legit. I double checked the offer terms were correct and I placed my order. My first question was could they make them to custom specs. I got a big yes. I asked what the lie angle was and he couldn’t answer it. They were offering the driver with 2 shaft selections where one shaft made the club $200.00 more expensive. The less expensive was a well know and respected shaft and highly used on Tour (DJ used it in his driver for a while). So I said I would go with the lower price one. I actually joked that in the event they didn’t get my shaft stiffness specs correct, and I had to re-shaft it, I would not feel so bad having to shell out more $$$ for a new one.

My driver came in 2 weeks later, which is not bad for a custom order. When I opened the box, the club was wrapped in a big cellophane bag and there was a label sticker on the bag that had the company name and a bar code below it. Below that was model name, 10.5 R Aldilla Voodo shaft. Next lines were: Shaft type: STD…shaft flex: STD…Length 44 1/2” …Grip: STD…Grip Size: + 1 wrap…Lie: STD…Loft: STD

I asked for them in the order to start with an R (regular shaft and tip it to get it to a medium stiff flex. I am pretty certain I asked for 44 inches but got 44 ½. I did ask for and got the + 1 extra wrap under the grip. I have to admit that when I got the club out of the wrap it looked real good, despite its enormous head. The pear shaped head was fine, but the face had the look of being slightly closed, from the center of the head to the heel, which worried me, as this had the look of pulls and hooks. With black enamel finish matched my 3 wood and they would be a good looking pair of woods. If it would perform like my 3 wood I would have me one super driver.

I went straight to the club to hit a few shots on the range. The club head felt good and solid, sounded a little loud but dense and OK. The shaft was another story. As soon as I was loose and put a little spank and strength into the swing, it was as I feared. The ball was hooked left of left. If I swung like a doo bopper, it was descent straight with only a slight pull left or block to the right. I took it on the course for a few holes and if I swung normal speed and force it was left of left. The clincher was on # 10. I was hitting straight into the setting sun and there was no chance to see the ball.

I hit my regular drive a little low in the heel. Not being able to see the ball, I felt it was in the left side of the fairway or light rough. I hit the new driver with what felt like a perfect swing and solid contact. Again, not being able to see the ball, I was confident I hit it down the right center where I was aiming and picked up my bag and started walking down the right side of the fairway. When I got to where the ball should have been there was no ball. The only ball I saw was 1 foot into the left rough. It was my first ball that I hit, which I was certain was in the left side of the fairway or light rough. The ball with my new driver was 20 yards left in the woods, which was a minimum of 40 to 50 yards left of where I would bet I hit it. It was obvious to me that the shaft had to be too weak and was over kicking, closing the club head at impact sending my ball to the left of left.

I drove the 72 miles to go see my club fitter/builder, Billy Delk, PGA, to have him check out the flex on my new driver to see where it was versus the “gold standard” of my 3 wood and the other 3 drivers he re-shafted last month. Billy put the new driver on the frequency machine and it was 23 cycles less than my three other ones. A flex range has 10 cycles per range. This driver being 23 cycles less meant that it was 2 1/3 flexes too weak. Instead of the stiff shaft I ordered, they missed the regular that the label said it was and I got a senior shaft. I may be a senior but I don’t need senior shafts yet.

So, I left the club with Billy and wrote him a check for a re-shaft and told him to call me when it was ready. SO, like I predicted to the order rep, I ordered the less expensive shaft in the event it wasn’t right and I had to change it I would be out less money spent. Not being psychic, how did I know that would likely happen? In the end, the good news is I will have another really good driver when Billy gets done doing his magic in re-shafting it to fit me.

Is there a moral to this story? Sure is! When you have problems hitting your driver or any club, and especially if you feel you made a good swing and the ball flight has the wrong zip code, be suspicious first of the club and the shaft, not you and your swing.

To get a good HIT…The club has to FIT!

Don with all the different clubs on the market how do I determine Which will fit me?
I have been using 2 different sets of clubs with some good hits with either clubs.
My Dad's old clubs that are the easiest to hit. My old set of Hogan Directors I can hit well
some times. the hogan's are pro line with stiff shafts. the driver I hardly ever used because
I could hit the 3 wood better and farther

As a hockey player hockey sticks came in 3 or 4 different lies. I could pick the correct lie then cut down the stick I liked to fit. I always got the perfect length and lie. After shortening my grip on my standard driver to make it lie correctly I am hitting it great.

I've noticed that nowhere in any video are we given a good look at Don or DJ hitting a driver. I guess I just don't really see how I can use the same form for the driver. It seems too long to go "up the tree" and follow through in the same comfortable manner that I do the irons. It's a little bit of a stretch for my woods but I can still do it. Driver.... not so much. I know that something is keeping me from getting the club all the way through as that would make for a nasty slice.

It'd be nice to see it.

First I'm going to say that I'm taking my driver to a club fitter because it's not stiff enough and too long. Having said that and before every one runs to a club maker with their driver, I noticed a lot of writers have the same trouble I was having, fading and slicing the drive. I think some of us think differently when we get a driver in our hands. After having success with irons and fairway woods I finally talked myself into doing it with the driver. As don says " pop up like a pop tart out of a toaster". I finally did it with my driver and the fade was gone. I would swing my irons, but try to kill the ball my driver. Maybe this will help someone.
My driver is 46.5 inlength, which is too long. It also feels whippy. Even with that standing up to the "T" finish helped. My drives went straight and I even got more distance.

Nice info, Robert. I hear people talk about kick point and all the fitting jargon. I love the challenge of golf...playing every weekday since my retirement 4 years ago (even most days of the rainy SF Bay Area winter). I have improved my index from 16 to 7.9, but I am not yet satisfied with my mechanics. I used to try something new almost every time I played due to erratic swing outcomes (usually slightly open clubface at impact). I am continually tempted by new drivers that I try with some initial success. I am financially tight (squeeky!). NOW, I am tempted to get a fitted set of clubs. My driver grip seems to be too big for my smallish hands (according to Surge's manual). My reservation (besides the sticker price) is that if my swing is in a terminal state of flux, how can I trust that todays fit will be ill fitted should I change set up or swing speed or any other variable. I hope I can settle on Don's system. I am encouraged by my iron improvement, but that deamon driver ... too long...not stiff enough...not trued...too low of a kick point...hook biased? I had to resort to a Combo Don with a wrap around swing and a AJ Bonar release. Did I forget to mention Dalton Mc Creary? Can anyone relate???

    Master of Dons,

I have to say, this program is the bomb. I haven't ordered yet but definitely will in a couple weeks from now. I picked up enough info on the site to make a huge difference.
The 3/4 turn has had an amazing effect on all parts of my game. I concentrate on keeping a good triangle through the swing and not jerking through(which makes the 3/4 priceless) 16 of 18 holes today I was putting for par or better. Eagle on the par 5! If my dumb ass could putt, I'd shoot 70's or low 80's. I'm always high 90's or 100's.
I can't wait to order the video series. I'm already hitting longer than ever with the 3/4 turn. Almost freaky how far it goes. My buddies about passed out when I beat them with a best ever 88 considering I almost threw my clubs in the pond the last time I played. The game has been transformed into an enjoyable and relaxing event. I am soooo glad you decided to put this to video.
    You da man Don.

    Hi Don

I have been using the PPGS DVD series foe a week and have seen improvements in my game. I have a lot of ingrained bad swing habits. I have been playing golf for over 45 years and find when I practice I hit a lot of pure golf shots. When I take my game to the course my mussel memory soon takes over and start hitting it all over the place. I know the PPGS system will soon erase the bad swings that return when mussel memory takes over. Thanks for the hard work you put in on the PPGS. I do feel a little ripped off though I bought your PPGS system a week ago and now you are offering it for half price.

Don, I just finally purchased the videos yesterday. I was up into the wee hours watching every single video. Today my 8 year old son (and soon to be golfing buddy) is watching them.

I've struggled for a long time to master a repeatable swing. I'm 33 and reasonably athletic but golf just didn't come naturally for me. I've taken a few lesson and even paid for what I think was a pretty decent fitting. I found your site about a week ago and signed up for the free videos. I think I'd read nearly every word on the site before I finally ordered the videos.

The videos are well worth the price for me. The reason I read your entire site was that begining with the first things I read about the swing and trying to implement it, my game changed dramatically. I haven't taken it to the course yet but I've been out on the range 4 times. Each of those 4 times have been the best times on the range of my life. I was the kind of golfer that would hit maybe 2 out of 5 "nice" shots at the range. Now I hit 4 of 5 or 5 of 6 "nice shots". It's truly remarkable and it's getting progressively better. I'm going to play 9 or 18 twice this week and see if my range success will translate to the course. Seeing as I've never had range success I'm quite hopefull that this extremely simple, repeatable swing will help me out a lot.

Every club is better--except my driver. My one claim to fame is that I've always been able to hit my driver well. Occasional hook but never a slice or really even a fade. Now when using the PPGS I slice it like a madman. I don't slice my fairway woods or any of my other clubs. I know that I'm not getting back to square early enough in my swing so something w/ the driver is making it just a tad slow to bring around. I need to iron that part out.

Thanks for making your teaching available to all us hackers Don!

I have to say Dan part of this shaft problem is your fault! Let me explain why. First of all I am a trained professional club fitter and builder. I was trained at Hotstix in Scottdale AZ. and was the lead builder for a while at another custom club manufacturer. The problem started when you asked for an "R" flex tipped to a medium stiff. Most builders use a chart that has about 12 cycles between flexes. So to take an "R" to a medium stiff with most shafts today you would have to tip it about 1 1/2" or so. Sounds OK right but the problem comes in with the fact that every shaft manufacturer has their own definition of what an "R" or and "S" is. You can get a standard "S" even from the same manufacturer that has as much as a 10 cycle difference from the shaft sitting next to it marked stiff! If they have a plus or minus 5 cycle tolerance one could be 5 cycles on the soft side and the other 5 cycles on the stiff side. When I build a club I build it to +/- 1 cycle to the frequency specified not to a silly letter rating like and "R " or an "S". What it comes down to is if you tell a builder that you want an "R" and they don't ask you exactly what frequency do you want that at. Then find a builder who does. Also if you don't know what frequency you play at well what you end up with is your own fault! If your at all serious enough about this game to take lessons and you haven't been fitted then your kidding yourself. And I mean a real dynamic fitting not the make believe ones you get at the major retail giants. Also if you get an online custom fitting over the internet call me I have a bridge I have been trying to sell! LOL! One thing many players don't know is each time you change from one type of shaft to another you might need a slighty different frequency. Shaft frequency's are measured from the butt of the shaft and it doesn't tell you anything about tip stiffness. Two shafts at the same frequency for example a Fujikura Speeder 757 verses a Gaffalloy Blue ProLaunch both cut to lets say 250 cycles on the nose will play totally differently even though both are at the same frequency the tip behavior on them is very different. You could hit the speeder perfectly and hit the ProLaunch with a hook because the tip is more active. Along with that one shaft might work great in this head but not well with that head because of a CG difference in the design of the head! My advice is to find a good fitter and even a better builder( a great build after an Ok fitting is usually a lot more playable than a lousy build after a perfect fitting) and when ever you want to try a new club if you can just but the head and have a shaft custom fit to it! Otherwise hit the ball and watch it go where it lands nobody knows!! I personally am using clubs who's head designs are at least 7 years old but my shafts are all perfectly matched to +1 frequency over my spec(it's easier to hit a shaft that is one cycle to stiff than two cycles too soft!). I am fifty years old and still hit it past most people I play with (even the 20 yr olds)not because I am super man, because I can just swing at the ball and know that even when I miss it it's usually a better hit than most players because the shafts fit me! Not to brag but after I built a set for Keith Fergeson on the senior tour he won twice in a matter of a few weeks. Most players don't have any clue how far off their set is from being right for them! Not even the Pros.
  • Robert,

You are right about me likely messing up the chance of getting a good driver when I asked for an regular shaft to be tipped up to stiff. The problem is I didn't even get an R shaft it was a weak senior shaft by the frequency number. Everything you say is correct about fitting. I believe in fitting clubs and using certified and qualified fitters and I preach to the hilt to my students and in the articles I wrote last week about finding and using a fitter and always getting your clubs checked to see if what you ordered is what you got and that they all match. I am sure you would agree that the quality control in club manufacturing is an industry wide problem and that makes your services so valuable and necessary. I know enough about fitting and club building to be dangerous and to know that I cannot tell my students and readers enough times to find a good local club fitter and builder to take care of their club needs. My fitter is Billy Delk a PGA Pro and I drive 72 miles each way to see him. He is good, knows my swing and all my specs and frequencies and he is worth every mile of the trip because I know my clubs are fit and will work the way I want them to.

The PPGS web site will soon open a membership section that I plan to invite experts in all areas of anything to do with golf, physiology and any other sciences or fields that can help golfers to become "Contributing Editors." They will be listed on the site with their bios and contact info and will submit articles and information about their fields of expertise, like you did above in answering and informing me and the readers above. The key is I want the PPGS membership site to be more than just swing instruction. I want our contributing editors to cover fields that will not only help our members golf swing, equipment and playing ability but also their overall lives.

Back to you and club fitting. I like your comment about your bad shots are better than most players mis-hits because your clubs are fit for you. I play that way because my clubs and swing are correct, MY wish is for all golfers to have the swing and the clubs to fit it. You say at the end of your comments that most players and even pros don't have a clue how far off their set is from being right. Well what do you say you and me and other club fitters and builders take up the challenge to get the message out to the golfers and pros about the importance of properly fitted clubs. As I said, that is one of the missions I have set for this web site. I invite you to tee it up with me here to help get out the club fitting message. We have a large membership just looking for good advice.

OK, I get it, got it want to get r done now...SO which is the most reliable place to take the driver?
    Dick Sporting Goods or Golftec?
  • Robert Ricks
My first reading on you PP golf swing was straight back and straight through on a vertical plane and avoid the graveyard. A second reading it would appear you advocate taking it back slightly to the inside and flatten it out a little more on the downswing. Am I confused?
