Day 6: Golf Swing Take Away

This text will be replaced

Today we’re going to take apart the take-away.

This is something a lot of amateur golfers don’t even think about. They were told early on to push the club away low to the ground and adopted that technique without question. Now, it’s just part of the way they do things.

That’s a big mistake!

And in today’s lesson, I’ll explain why and what you can do to correct it.

So pushing the club away low to the ground on take-away is just another one of those bogus tips that get tossed around. Truth is, taking the club away low causes the left shoulder to be pulled down, yielding a reverse tilt. Your club needs to be lifted up to keep the shoulders and hips level, and to get it above your hands at the top of the backswing.

I teach that we lift the club from the shoulder sockets up in a rounded arc.

I use the image of a catcher squatting right behind your aiming line — with his glove out, around knee high. Now what you do is lift your club up with both arms right from your shoulder sockets into the mitt toe up. The proper rotation of the arms and clubface is achieved by making sure the club goes into the mitt… toe up.

Pretty easy, isn’t it?

Go forth and practice it and then watch strokes drop from your game!

And don’t forget to bring my Peak Performance Golf Swing Videos with you.

In fact, to make my swing even easier to learn and master, my team has made the videos in a format you can download right to your mobile phone.

That way, you can literally take The Surge on the links with you as your constant companion.

Still worried they may not be the “answer” you’ve been looking for?

I completely understand.

And that’s why you can have videos for an entire year without risk.

If you’re not 100% convinced my system is the LAST golf swing lesson you will ever need, I’ll return every penny of your money and you can keep the videos just for wasting your time.

This way, it either works for you… or it’s FREE.

See you then,

Thanks for all the tips, your a great instructor. I have read some of the mail back to you and it looks like some of the students didn't listen.
Because of the instructions that you have shown me I already have seen a change in how I ready myself to hit the ball. I have aquired a draw and sometimes "hook" that by doing what you have instructed has really worked. The ball flight is straight and has given me much more confidence in what I want to do in golf.
I just wanted to say thanks

Makes sense. I was taught the "hit the tee method" and couldn't seem to get a natural feel on the take-away. Don, you said something interesting at the end of today's lesson and I got a sense that it has a lot of importance, i.e., "take it straight up the tree." I'm hoping that one of your lessons will further elaborate on this. So far all great lessons! Thanks, Tim
  • john
Don I didn't get lesson #5 -- could you please send it. I'm trying the others at home. Can't wait to get to a range and see if they work. Tks John
  • BPPerk
  • Mike
I never got number 5. Can someone please assist?
  • Greg C
you negative people baffle me, if you have a problem with these lessons or want to be sarcastic then stop watching them, thats why hes doing what he is and why your watching them
  • ROBIN REBMAN
DON WOULD YOU TAKE A CHALLANGE ON YOUR TEACHINGS THE CHALLANGE IS I DO NOT PLAY GOLF I HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE DRIVING RANGE AND HITTING BALLS AS I WOULD LIKE TO LEARN THE GAME I COSISTLY HIT THE BALL AT 250 TO 275 BUT IT SLICES TO THE RIGHT EVERYONE SAYS SAYS IF I CAN GET THE SLICE OUT I COULD EASILY HIT THE BALL 315TO 335 WHICH EVERYBODY SAYS IS REMARKABLE I KNOW NOTHING OF THE GAME AS IT SEEMS TO BE FUN AS I WOULD LIKE TO COMPETE WITH MY CLIENTS ON THE COURSE WOULD YOU TAKE ME AS A PROJECT AND TEACH ME ALL THESE THINGS YOU SAY WORK AS TO MY WAY OF THINKING IF ALL THIS WORKS FOR ME IT WOULD WORK FOR ANYBODY ELSE...ROBIN
  • Thedonaldgolf
    Hi Robin,
For Don or anyone to help, please put in lower case, slow down and create paragraphs, at least somewhat correlated to your swing symptoms.

If you you are slicing to the right as a beginner, up to 275, this does not mean you can necessarily hit it 335 straight even with Butch Harmon, Hank Haney etc as your teacher.

You most likely will not hit 335 with Mr. T's methods. You are getting your distance currently because you are young have lots of biochemical TStrone in your system and are not scared to "pull your back" out. Slow down some and maybe some of us out here will help you.

Mr T does not have time to reply to challenges like these because he has prior comittments that are more important:

    DJ's tour this year, etc.

    Robin,
Don has made a complete video course available to you as a great personal "project"! Try it out.

    Steve
  • robin rebman
ok i will, how do i get this? is it going to cost me any money
  • BPPerk
Did you really just ask, in all caps, for personal one on one instruction as a "project" rather than use the principles offered here for free or enroll in one of Don's golf schools?
  • Thedonaldgolf
Give them a small break, the individual does not understanNNd.
  • BILL
BEING OFFENDED BY ALL CAPS OR CALLING IT SCREAMING HAS GONE BY THE WAYSIDE. MOST PEOPLE PREFER ALL CAPS. EASIER TO READ AND TYPE.
  • Thegolfdonald
    Not true.
Do you have a survey for using the word "mOsT".
It could be "beleived" the most beople (I am a beople type of person - joke!!!) justa wanna have it their a way, youa know what I mean.

BEsiDEss most folks would rather have learned to write besides thsi way with dylsleixiasloy spelled stuff and so forth, except it takes more time and everyone is in a hurry to gett to the next town or county or city or thought or paragraphy and no one has any time to waste (especially British Petroleum) cause they just spilled the oil they need more carbon for graphite shafts and synthetic styrabutadiene for golf ball windings for ballata Titleist before Jack and Gary and Tom could hit worth a on winding trail at Old Coruse St Jimy Andrews Scottishland etc............................................................
  • Thedonaldgolf
Simply, its just hard to read all caps because the works run together.
  • TAllen
I like the content of these daily lessons: brief, concise, and they address topics my analytical mind has struggled with since I began the game. My only criticism is with Don's accent. He doesn't pronounce "r"s that follow a vowel. I had to listen to this lesson about ten times to figure out if he was saying "start" or "stop". Since those words are antonyms, that clarification is pretty significant to getting this lesson right. There a couple places in this one where I'm still not sure which word is saying, but I've plugged in the word that makes the most sense based on the rest of the content of this lesson. I hate to be nit-picky, but it does matter.
  • TAllen
Oops...my bad...my comment was actually in regard to lesson #5.
  • ken chicago
Garbage! This guy has got it all wrong. People need swing suggestions that exaggerate what must be done. The low slow takeaway is such a technique. An amateur will rarely over do it! It's just like grip pressure. Whatever happens, the am will be holding the club too tight and the lesson must exaggerate to get the correct response.
  • Thedonaldgolf
    Ken,
you just don't understand. I have hit the ball 335 hards into the wind, holding it so tight my knuckles were white.

If I conditioned my hands and forearms to survive the strain, this would be the best way, simply because the club could not possibly twist at impact, except for shaft torsional flex (torques is an incorrect usage of an engineering term).
  • BPPerk
    Ken,
You've been a golf professional for how long? What is your handicap?

I'd just like a comparative basis for your posts and what Don blogs.
  • Thedonaldgolf
BPPerk knows his stuff, so does Mr. T.
  • Geoff
    Don,
I didn't receive Day 3 or 5, but the rest have been of great benefit, thank you.
  • Erv
don I cant belive it m a beginer and with your lessons my ball is going were I want it to go not were it wants to go thanks man
  • Barb
Need to SEE A DEMONSTRATION OF THE SWING. To see what U are talking about.
  • Roy
I agree with Bill...we can't see what you are talking about when you demonstrate the different techniques or faults. You are a nice looking guy BUT looking at your talking head explain things without showing what you are talking about really takes away from your valuable lessons.
  • Bill
like your lessons but would like to see you demonstrate what you are talking about.
  • Galleyos101c
    Really love these lessons!!!

I am experiencing amazing 'luck' (want to call it skill) after watching and/or reading the free email lessons. Yesterday I played with my regular group of ladies and after seeing my improvements they said they do not want to play with me any more. I have told them all about The Surge and they too are requesting lessons.

For me, these lessons are a no-nonsense approach to what I think is one of the hardest sports I have ever tried to master.

Before these lessons, I could never reach my lowest score of 49 (I only play nine) and was averaging a 53. Yesterday, I made 4 pars and my score was a 44. Being incredibly excited, I played again today. I was worried 'all of this' was a fluke. My husband even warned me that after a really good day that my mind might work on me and I wouldn't be able to repeat it. The warning was a good one cause my mind really was over thinking things and even though I did not do as well, I still shot a 48.

Thanks Don!!!!! Big - Huge - THANKS
  • When I pause at 1:51 it looks like your wrist is cocked. I thought we werent supposed to this. Can we still go up the tree without cocking our wrists?
  • barry o'donnell
.. a big thank you to Ken Davis .. prepared to say it "as it is" .... as a long time golfer, i do not think that i have ever seen such light weight information presented as some form of supposed golf instruction ... Ken's "as seen on TV" analogy is spot on ....

.. and as for the pseudo philosophical rant by "namaste" ... sorry, but your analysis and diagnosis is so misplaced and wrong, it is you how should be looking for some deep and meaningful HELP .. !!!
  • Dave
    Hi Don,
I played on a local course last Saturday, and every ball I hit, irrespective of club, went left.
It drove me crazy as I'm a 25 handicap (don't say that too loudly) and didn't know what I was doing wrong.
I watched Lessons 1 -5 last evening, went to driving range with my 7 iron, put all your advice to use.
    The immediate difference was staggering.
I appreciate it's only a start, but it's a really good start, thank you for that.
  • Nick
Well i have a set of Nike SQ clubs and i dont hit them very good i heard that the G15 irons are pretty forgiving whats ur take on this
  • Clayton Klippert
Where do you focus your eyes when hitting the ball??????
  • Emy
We were in a golf tournament last year and one of the competitors was a lady that had been a man. Do you know any rules about this? We didn't feel it was very fair as "he she "won the longest drive. closest to the pin and other scores. What do you think?

I am anxious to try some of your tips soon.

    Thanks
  • Tim Holt
Hi, I sometimes get so frustrated out on the course, that when it is my turn to hit, I just say "to hell with it", walk up to the ball and let it fly and much to my amazement the crazy ball go's long and straight. What could that be all about?
    Tim
  • I think it was Tom Watson who said " Those that can play, play, those that can't , Teach"

Thanks so much for the videos. Your swing method has revolutionized my game. I quit playing years ago because nothing worked. The more lessons I took, the worse I got. I loved the game, but being so pitiful at it drove me away. I took a chance on your system on a lark, and I am playing really well. I am consistently in the low 80s. And I really think I can get better.

To those who don't like the system, if it does not work for you, I understand why you won't use it. But to call The Surge a fraud is way overboard. Lots of golfers have very different swings. The key is consistently making good contact. This system works really well for me, so I will stick with it as long as it works. I could care less about whatever "accepted fundamentals" I might be breaking. To me, the only thing that is important is that I am breaking 90. And hopefully I will be shooting in the 70s sometime in the next couple of years.

Different perspectives on the swing are great because this is the first swing that has worked for me.

A lot of people continue to direct interesting / important questions to Don about their swing, etc. Tell me, does Don ever answer them? If so, he doesn't appear to do so in this forum - at least from what I can read here. Consequently, are people wasting their time asking questions?
  • phil
ive just watched day 6 of your golf swing, the take away, and to my amazement you hit the nail on the head, im finding when im comming in to hit the ball im hitting the ball off to the left and it feels like the club is twisting in my hand, IS MY GRIP on the club to light, ??
