Golf Swing Injury Epidemic!

I have been teaching the “Surge Swing,” a limited turn – ¾ length backswing since 1984 when I began learning about physiology from orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ned Armstrong, and then… the physics from my engineering mentor Henry Ryffel. I hope we’ll be seeing Henry and Ned on video up here soon.

Right from the start, this new swing based on physics and physiology became know as the “Body Friendly” swing. I began getting known to adult golfers as the pro to see if your back is hurting because of your golf swing. And, it is quite unbelievable how many golfers came to me over the years to help their swing… and their backs or other body parts hurt and injured playing this sometimes refereed to… “sissy” game of golf.

The most alarming point I have seen develop in golf started around 1992 in the advent of a new swing theory called The X Factor Swing, and what I call a rotational swing. This new swing theory I believe, as well as many medical experts, is the number one cause of the increase of golf swing injuries… especially to the lower back. It is mind boggling . Since 1992 , the number of junior golfers, as young as 14 years old, telling me on the lesson tee that their backs were already hurting them. I am not talking aching or a little discomfort from over activity, I am talking about they have reached PAIN!!! Pain where many had already had to seek treatment and had to quit playing for extended periods for rehab.

This week, I’ve been busy conducting a US Sports Camp, Nike Junior Golf Camp. I had at least 6 of the 15 golfers, aged 14 thru 17, tell me that their backs really hurt when I asked them if they had any physical problems I need to know.

HELLO!!! We’re talking about junior golfers, teenagers, already having back pain. What is their outlook for a long golfing career with them already experiencing pain so young? NOT TOO GOOD!

Let me be brief and to the point about the ultimate cause of this back pain problem in all golfers. It is basically the result of using the rotational swing, which emphasis the principle that power comes from a huge upper torso turn and windup behind the ball in the backswing. This is followed by an explosive unwinding or turning of the torso in the downswing, with the left leg and knee straightening and locking up to a finish with the chest and hips facing way left of the target.

Why does this rotational swing cause Injury? Because plain and simple, the back is not designed to rotate any where near the amount being practiced, and at the speeds and stresses exerted in this turning, twisting rotational swing at any AGE!!!

What kind of sent me over the edge to write this article was a news report I heard a while ago on The Golf Channel’s Golf Central about Natalie Gulbis, a young LPGA superstar. I saw a special on her about a typical day in her life on tour, and it included stretching and strength training, to keep her strong and fit. She is doing her part to be fit and healthy.

They announced that Natalie had visited the Shands Clinic in Cleveland and had been diagnosed with two herniated discs in her lower back. She was told she needed at least 3 weeks rest and was forced to withdraw from the LPGA Tournament that week, causing her to miss a major. To me, this is unbelievable. She now has a major back problem caused by her swing, and she is so young.

Natalie’s swing is rotational, like most young golfers who have taken lessons the past 15 years. They are supple and flexible and encouraged to make super big backswing and forward swing turns for power. Natalie’s downswing is a big and fast lower turn that causes her left leg to straighten and lock up, raising her left hip up and basically impedes her upper torso from turning in sync with her legs and hips. To counter this, she has to lunge her upper torso downward, dropping her shoulders and hip what appears to be 9 inches to a foot, and then swing her right shoulder downward and through to get her arms and club to swing straight toward the target. This upper torso dip or “spinal compression” as I call it, places unbelievable stresses and torque on the lower back and hips. Paula Creamer, another under 21 years old LPGA player has a very similar spinal compression against her locked left knee. Tiger Woods has this spinal compression, and as we all know, he has left knee problems as well as back pain issues.

What scares me is that this super rotational swing with spinal compression is just about all I see from young players under 21 years old. What also scares me is that this golf swing injury is now becoming as prevalent on the LPGA Tour (where women are suppose to be more supple and flexible than men) as it is on the PGA Tour. And, on the PGA Tour it is scary how many players work out daily on strength and flexibility yet are continually hampered with back problems. Many are young, slim and fit, yet have a never ending problem of back pain. Lastly, it scares me how many golfers, period, are having back problems. All brought on by trying to swing making a big shoulder turn seeking more power.

I am real afraid and concerned that we are quickly, like at warp speed, heading into a golf swing injury epidemic. The good news is it can be avoided with a plain and simple swing.

The Limited Turn – ¾ vertical backswing!!! To the T – Finish facing the target!!!

Don, just getting started with your free lessons.....I have started to develop back pain and stiffness.
I know it must be from trying to rotate to much.
But I don't guite understand how much of a shoulder turn you should take, as well as hip turn?
    Thanks
    Lindsey
  • Watch out for the joints. Improper function can be a problem. Soft tissue lies between the certival discs which hold the discs collectively. Particular conditions may cause the joint from working rightly resulting in stiffness in muscle pain in the low back.

Also tension and strain to the spinal muscles can be a cause of low back pain. It happens when an excessive stress is put on to specific area. Be careful!

  • Simon - something more to say -

Yoga will also help with the back pain. I would like to recommend.
  • Hello there,

Good for sharing experiences. Golfing is a good sport.

Just one thing, in case your back pain is chronic and it happens in your lower left side area. I suggest you consult with the doctor, because it could be a signal for spinal cancer or colon cancer.

    Best wishes,

    Don:
I have subsribed to your PPGS as of July 24,2009 but don't seem to be able to retrieve them in full screen. I am a new computer user and I feel I may be doing something wrong in retrieving same. Please advise.

Hi Don--- First let me tell you that I have lowered my USGA handicap at LakeRidge by 5 strokes in the 5 weeks I've had the material. You have the answer. The other day I moved some furniture the wrong way and suffered a "possible partial tear of the subscapularis and/or the transverse ligaament" That's from the first MRI. My Dr. says take some pain meds and try swinging,---if it doesn't hurt too much go ahead and play. Today, I hit 25 wedges and 3-metals without pain. Any rotational motion causes stabing pain but your swing does not. The day I found you may have been the lukiest day of my 78th year. Thanks again.
  • I love the fact that your swing helps people with back pain. I injured my back playing football in the early 70's and have played with back pain ever since that time. Learning the 3/4 swing really saved me and has actually given me more speed through the ball and more distance. Keep up the great work.

Couple things: I've viewed the videos and read most of the manual, can't seem to find details on how to hit intentional fades and draws. Also, I need a tip on how to transition from left arm parallel to the toe line into the "lift." What muscles do the lifting?
I'm only two weeks into this swing, but I can see great potential to cure my hook after 4 decades of golf.

I myself have already years problems with my back.
I am 61 years of age. 5 years ago I started a program in the fitness-centre to strengthen my back and since then the problems are minimized, as well my tennis and golf go much better.
So go to fitness and strengthen muscles and back.
    Improvement after several weeks already.

    Hi, DJ,
Thanks for the email lessons. I see no reason to order any CDS or DVDS. Your instructions are clear, although, like many, I would like to see the leg action in your clips. I have been 10 h'cap for the last 20 years, previously 5, and during that period I have had instructions from supposidly high quality teachers with a view to improve my iron play. Everone wanted me,68 now,5ft7ins, to go from 70-75* turn to 90!!!!!!!!!! As a result of all these lessons I have a lovely, slow swing, much praised, which propels the ball straight down the middle every time BUT more than half the time they are mistimed!!! Therefore, I drive the ball about 200yds. If timed well it is 220yards. Big deal. I have always thought my wrists were too active, so holding them firm is good.especially with the irons. You other insruction to keep the swing in front of body has reverted my backswing to go above shoulder line which is natural for my height. Guess what, my latest coach had taught me to go to 1- plane from the 2-plane swing I had.
I shall let you know if I start to hit the ball a lot further, which I know I can do, but I don't really think it will happen. It's just a dream.......I live in England,so I was hoping DJ to qualify for the final 36 holes at The Open and view his swing closely. Better luck next year. Thanks for your help. Anthony.

With out being argumentative, I do not agree that the legs play no part in the golf swing. To me they play a big part and the PPG swing allows me to use them. I don't pre-load right for looks. I can'i swing up to the tee unless I shift weight. When I hit a slice or lose distance on a drive I noticed my right foot is still on the ground when I finish. when i use my legs to swing u to a T finish, I hit it straighter and longer. If the legs are not important why not just get a wide stance and keep the weight balance on both feet. Do not shift. Then see how good a swing is a result. I agree the X factor swing does kill your back.

Don have not recieved andy of my ffree lessons What seems to be the hold up?
  • Pondeli
Hi Don, I recently purchased your DVDs. My main motiviation was I wanted a swing that would not hurt my body and give me accuracy and distance with my clubs. After viewing your discs I feel that they will be of a benefit to me. I have played twice since then with mixed results. I am hiiting the ball a little better. I think that I am still trying to rotate to the ball on the downswing . The driver has always been my weakness. It seems no matter what swing method I use I have no distance. Ball forward, ball back, teed high, teed low all the same result. Any suggestions? By the way after two rounds of your system I did not experience any back or knee pain.

    Best regards,
    Pondeli Apessos

I am interested in you video's. You had a special just after the 10 mistakes and I was out of town and my son accidentally deleted the e-mail. Is it still possible to obtain the video's at the 50% discount.
    Thank you from a Canadian

just purchased peak performance dvds and videos. watched them all. i played one round using the vertical forward to vertical swing and loved it. it suits my body type. i noticed the forearms do a lot more work.

the firm grip made a bid difference. i did not try to re-grip at the top.

the backswing was easy to do and easy on my back.

the follows thru and finish are natural completion of the swing.

i was going to give up the game ( 64 yr old) due to back problems from the rotational swing. thanks for the second chance.

I live in Australia so the concept of a catchers mit is foreign to me. I know a catchers mit is a baseball glove but I have no idea where the catcher stands or where the mit is held. Video of this in the free lessons would be helpful before I commit to buying the dvd pack.
  • Richard Swiatek
I'm interested in getting the DVD's, not the on-line version because I have problems dealing with the computer. However, some comments indicate that the videos lack good front and side views of the swing, and you are in the process of filming some updates.
    Thus, I'll wait?
  • cloris
    hi don,
thank you for your tips. the 10 free lessons were very helpful and make a lot of sense.
can i still get your dvds for the special promotional price?
    pls advise,

I am a true believer/convert to your program. For me it works Fantastic for wedges through 3 hybrids... But as some others have said the Driver and Three Wood are giving me problems.. With my former swing I had a good inside out swing that created a nice draw but with the PPGS swing the Driver seems to be open at impact. I have tried closing the face with inconsistent results, I have tried standing farther away from the ball and chocking down on the club but still less than wonderful results. I know you recommended that using ladies drivers might help some people but was wondering if you could maybe give us some tips on optimizing the swing for Drivers. There just seems to be something a little different..

One other request would be maybe to show how you would recommend doing a draw or a cut using the PPGS swing... Do you modify the swing plane slightly or open/close the club face? What do you think is best?
  • Patrick Henry
I've been using your swing on the course for two weeks now and have never hit the ball straighter or pain free in my life! I can't believe that I am perfectly balanced after each and every swing for the first time since I took up the game. The back injury, herniated LL 4-5. or 5-6, I forget, that caused me to stop playing golf in the early 1980's haven't bothered once! I'm so grateful to you for developing this swing and sharing it with us, Don Trahan! Your swing is so natural and It's so easy to execute. The first ball I hit with it went exactly how and where I hoped it would go!!! You're the man, "The Surge..."
  • Joe Moffa
    Surge,
I only bought the manual so I can't comment on the CDs but I enjoy your blogs and comments.
I would love to see a slow motion full view of your or DJ's swing. Preferably front & side view.
I also want to know if there is a place you answer the questions that the readers send in.
Maybe a column in the blog to answer popular questions when you can.
I am really enjoying your way of instructing, It rekindled my love of the game.
    Regards,
    Joe
  • The X factor swing is HORRIBLE and as Don says contributes mightily to the back problems seen on both tours and with Juniors. If you are a parent, teach your child the TRUTH, that the legs have nothing to do with the power in a golf swing and that there is nothing be be gained by creating a massive turn and then torquing the hell out of your back through the ball.
Don's is not the only approach to pain free golf..look at the idea of single axis golf also.

  • Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to update all of our dedicated blog participants on two issues:

#1. Don has been on location for the last 5 days doing a Nike Junior Golf Camp and has been at it from 6:00AM to 10:00PM daily. It's been great and he's been shooting a bunch of new content.... but hasn't had a lot of time to reply on the blog (barely getting his daily post up). More on that later, including a big surprise.

#2. While Don had the film crew there... he shot a some video of himself from "down the line", as well as the "front view". He's going to be "talking you through this" at the same time. I believe this is going to answer a lot of questions relating to the swing plane and how the takeaway "To the catcher's mitt and up the tree" is really just one smooth motion. You'll get the benefit of both the "visual" and his "play by play" breakdown of this important component of the Peak Performance Golf Swing.

Just as soon as the video has been edited... you'll see it right here on the PPGS blog!

Well I took the 10 free lessons, somehow lesson 5 never arrived. That doean't matter. I was hitting my irons ok for me but couldn't get off the tee. I developed a really bad slice! I saw your add and figured I had nothing to lose.
Thank you . I can't believe 9 what minute and a half videos worked but I don't have a slice and I am hitting the ball straighter. I don't think I've got the complete swing so I order the tapes. I stillturn my hips a little. I was shooting between 50 52 my last 2 rounds were 46 44. More important then the score is the ball is beginning to land where I was aiming. That makes golf fun again.
Used to be a bogey was a good score. Now a bogey feels normal.

Thanks again and I'll see how the tapes work!!
  • Greg Merrill
    Don:

I agree with Joe, Eric and Marv - there is very little in the way of actually showing the swing from different angles. A lot of talk about alignment, stance, etc. but the actual golf swing gets only a short snippit of video.

I too have surfed the web looking for DJ's U tube videos to see what the actual swing looks like.....
  • phil nuccio
Don, i have hit on bucket of balls and see a difference in my irons immedialtely. however, in regards tomy 3 wood and driver ( i could not hit a 3 wood before) i am still having a problem. i think there is something i am doing wrong when i try these clubs. on the driver i can seem to get any distance. normally i hit the driver around 240 using your swing i was only averaging 180 to 200. not sure what the problem is but i will pay more attention on the next bucket or on the tee box. the 3 wood i couldn't get off the ground but a couple of times. when i did get it off the ground it was hit pretty good at about the same distance i was hitting my driver. any tips on these two clubs in particular? by the way your tips on alignment alone is worth the price of the videos and i am excited to get this sysytem to work for me.
  • Marv Monk
I bought your dvds and have gone through them. But, being a very visual learner, I find that there are not enough various angle photos still and moving for me to be able to reproduce your desired swing. You seem to like to talk about the swing a lot but not show it much. Am I missing something or am I just stupid?
  • Erik Schultek
don will you post more videos of the swing in slo mo from multiple angles. it is difficult to slow the swings on the dvd down and have been trying to watch dj on you tube to get the swing engrained. it would help me see the power whip in the downswing without using wrists. thanks
  • Joe Cirillo
I like a lot of your theories, especially the 3/4 turn. But I don't see why you have to do the catcher's mitt and then up the tree. Why not simply swing the club back on plane up to about 3/4 and come back down? I This takeaway can be more "up" as you suggest, but the two-part motion is confusing to me and others.
  • moose
I play 5 days a week and practice everyday using the ppgs and never have a sore back or any other body part.
