Day 5: Alignment, Left Or Right

This text will be replaced

Welcome back to the “Top Ten Master Mistakes” Video series.

Our topic today in lesson number 5 is alignment.

Basically that means “the way you aim your body”.

How big a deal is this?

Well, I’d say that 90 to 95% of ALL swing problems arise out of alignment.

So not only is alignment important… but it’s critical!

If alignment is a problem for you, then getting today’s lesson lodged firmly in your brain is going to have a major impact on your very next game. And when you load it up with the rest of these tips, you’ll be the new King (or Queen) of your local links!

Enough build up, let’s get down to business:

I see so many amateurs aiming way to the right or way to the left of their target. When I point it out to them, they often reply, “Oh, I have to do that to compensate for my hook!”… or their slice. I then ask if them if they really want to play that hook or slice. And, of course, they always reply that they would rather hit it straight.

Well, the key here is that if you don’t want that big hook or slice then don’t set up way left or right to play for it.

Because if you do it will take more of what you don’t want to hit it to the target.

Remember… “what you focus on grows larger” and to hit it straight you have to AIM… Parallel Left.

Work on this don’t get lazy with it!

This is often what separates the boys from the girls in golf.

Now, there’s one last thing I want to say on this before we end today’s lesson.

I have found my teachings to be like a giant meat cleaver cutting through the sea of humanity and separating golfers into two very distinct groups:

(1) Those who “get” alignment.

(2) Those who don’t get alignment.

The fact is, almost nobody teaches alignment.

And if you want to know the real “secret” to humiliating your friends, winning bets and dominating tournaments, then alignment is IT.

This is why I spend a LOT of time on alignment in my Peak Performance Golf Swing DVD Series.

In fact, just to make SURE my students “get” it, I even have a special bonus video where D.J. (who has so far won 2 PGA Championships with this swing) and I BOTH walk you through alignment step-by-step.

This one part of the PPGS alone can make you a super star on the links. I see it all the time.

You can grab your copy of my HD Videos now at:

See you then.

Hi Don, after viewing your 2nd and 3rd video, ( i can't get the 1st) I had a good game on Tuesday and brought my score down by 7 strokes. I had 2 pars and 1 over the rest, which was very pleasing. I am now looking forward to next week to try out 4 and 5 for real. Many thanks. Les UK

If these FREE lessons are of no benefit to some golfers, There's always free lesson's at the Driving range..... teaching yourself.
  • BPPerk
    Thanks for the laugh today.
  • Bobby
I got something from the free videos. However, why should Surge give you something for nothing? I've learned a lot from ponying up the fee to have access to the more elaborate lessons.

The bottom line, is that I'm seeing and feeling, and swinging with more power and straighter, than ever before. Somebody on the blog wrote that it will take a few weeks and even months before this stuff becomes second nature.

I must say if I'm hitting it straighter now and continue to work on it, I look forward to where I'll be in the weeks and months to come. As I've said previously, my goal isn't to be a PGA player, rather it's to be the best player that I'm capable of being, and let's not forget, it's all about fun. We've all got choices of whether to be miserable or be happy.

I'd rather have fun and be happy in learning how to improve my game. If I shank a shot, it's not about that, but it's about how I recover. Hang in there! Don't forget while on the course or the range, take a deep breath before your next shot, and have fun. It could be a lot worse.

I too am getting frustrated with these "instructional" videos that weren't free!. If I went to take a lesson from an instructor and they just sat there and blabbed with metaphors and no demonstration of what "aim parallel left" (even I know exactly what Don means), I would put my clubs back in my bag and walk away. I feel jipted.....I expected more instructional support and a demonstration of each of these fundamentals....would never consider purchasing anything else for fear of more bla bla bla and no demonstratiiono the proper technique......Just trying to break eighty! Ever notice you can't even see the full swing in the intros....Just upper body and then half of that goes out of the frame! You guys need to do a better job with this...
  • So, you bought the video series. Yes? Not satisfied, you can get your money back. Seems you must be talking about the 10 series. Those are not instructional videos and never intended to be.
  • BPPerk
These aren't free? How much are you paying for them?

If you don't like the free lessons and blogs, so be it. Nobody is forcing you to continue and you can unsubcribe at any time (the link is in every email). If you were expecting some magic cure to your golf game for free, then a little expectation management is in order.
  • slicer
I agree w/ the Disappointed Golfer. I'm not sure what "parallel left" means...other than literally.
  • BPPerk
OK ... now that this isn't the first thing I see after work ... a more calm response.

Had you simply typed "parallel left" into the search bar at the top you would have come across several blogs done since these ten free videos were made. It is the train track analogy that many instructors have used over the years .... the ball is on one rail, your body alignment is on the other. If you aim your body at the target, the line the ball is on automatically shifts to the right.

    http://www.peakperformancegolfswing.com/body-al...
  • BPPerk
It is quite literal ... your body and eyes aligned on a parallel line to the ball/target line. I'm refraining from going further until I unwind from work.

I just listened to the alignment lesson of this free 10 lesson series. I heard a lot of sayings and a few metaphors (like the doctor who doesn't care about your vital signs). All of this is making the case that alignment is important. But there is no teaching going on here. You didn't say anything about alignment until one quick mention at the end - put the club on the ground and another for your feet...

These aren't free lessons, these are free advertisments for your training dvd's or whatever that are for purchase.

I don't mind you selling your training program - it's a business and you have to sell stuff to make a living. But I don't appreciate being told I can get 10 free lessons, when in fact they are not lessons at all - just advertisments and a bunch of sports-blah blah blah I could record from ESPN sportscenter.

You prove once again, TANSTAAFL. It's like going to the doctor and expecting they will check your vital signs with no charge for an office visit. If they do, put your clubs down and walk out of there. You gotta have a target - and I guess that's me.

Not inclined to buy, because I worry the purchased set will have just a little content to sports jabberness ratio...

    dissapointed new golfer.
  • Thedonaldgolf
    Hi DD,
Help me, is TANSTAAFL a county near Pottawatomie in Kansas.
  • Tedbsails
Dissapointed new golfer......Exactly my sentiments!!!! I thought I was alone, glad to see someone out there who is a real 'tell it like it is guy'....I too a 'dissapointed new golfer'!!!
  • Bo
Why don't these lessons come in video anymore. They are just in print.
  • BPPerk
The video is at the top of the page. If it isn't showing for you, check your browser.
  • Kjsgoneskiing17
Are you saying that "girls" are lazy on the course? I hope not, because I (a girl) am working very hard to improve my game as well as enjoy the game of golf.
  • Thedonaldgolf
With humor!!! don't work too hard, especially on any one thing. I know from 27 years of self teach (for myself), that nothing works perfectly, even after you have perfected it, when it comes to this game.
  • Thedonaldgolf
Hi, Kjs g s seventeen (This was Havliceks number on the 60's Celtics with Big Bill Russell and the gang). These guys were way cooler than LBJ or MJ.

Ladies are not lazy, everyone is lazy, especially when it comes to "effort" to make these blogs at least literally readable (give an effoort to sppell correctly) and the world be a better place (escuse me, "the world would be a better place").

I think John Lennon said this in one of his songs.
  • Steve Smith
It's just a old saying that's been around a long time. Maybe not the most politically correct thing these days but I've heard girls use the same phrase on softball teams that I've coached. I'm certain Don didn't intend to insult girls.
  • Bobby
I'm 54 years old. I'm amazed at the turnaround in my golf swing by applying these techniques from the sample videos. I'm consistently hitting straighter and with more power unlike ever before. I plan on purchasing the videos. There is a famous saying which states:"That when the student is ready, the teacher will be present." How true as it relates to my experience with knowledge from "the Surge."
  • Blwyton
I agree with GarryC, Don talks too much. I'm a visual learner - just received lesson 5 & throughout the series so far, there is no demonstration of the topic. Perhaps this is so that we "will" purchase the DVD's but I'm not inclined to do so based on what I've seen so far. Bonnie
  • Oldiesrocker2001
I agree too. I heard/saw a lot of talking, but very little demonstration. So far, the the firm grip lesson has been the most helpful for me - I guess because it didn't need a demonstration.
  • Thedonaldgolf
Enjoy his passion, for variety in the field of golf. Every human body is different, and so therefore the professional teachers need multiple methodologies to create swings for their amateur clients.
Teach it and they will come, thats what Dustin Hoffman may have said or was it Kevin Costner.
  • SARAH
WHAT DO YOU MEAN "SEPARATES THE BOYS FROM THE GIRLS". i AM FEMAIL AND HAVE JUST TAKEN UP GOLF AND AM OFFENDED BY THAT STATEMENT. GET REAL WITH THE TIMES.
  • Thedonaldgolf
Do you mean "THE TIMES, they are changin by Dylan"?
  • Thedonaldgolf
Of course you are female and will always be offended.
  • BPPerk
Would you have preferred "separates the wheat from the chaff"? It's a common phrase.

You're so busy ranting how you are offended by the phrase that you fail to spell "female" correctly ... unless you were intentionally combining the chemical symbol for iron and a synonym for postage.
  • Thedonaldgolf
    Very good.
  • Kjsgoneskiing17
HA!!! A common phrase if you belong to the "good old boys club". Golf belongs to men, women and children alike. It's a great game to be enjoyed by ALL.
  • Thedonaldgolf
Women can never belong to the "g o b c", so relax. Don is a Boston or Bronx hooligan, can't you hear the accent, so he is gonna let'em slip once in a while.
Just because the perfect boys don't say it, they may think it.
Remember, (since the lady screwed up the Masters aura), now we proletariats cannot even order a hat online, when we proletariats don't have money and time for a trip to Augusta.
Its about money, not gender. When you get old you will understand this.
  • Katherine
I just listened to and read the lesson on alignment, but I'm afraid I'm one of those who don't get it! What does "aim parallel left" mean?
  • linda uk
as a 22 handicapper I too do not get alignment as I am blind in my left eye my shot to the pin is not as accurate as I like just practise and enjoy the game
  • BPPerk
Picture railroad tracks .... The outer rail is your ball to target line, the inner rail is your "parallel left" aiming line.
  • Ted
If you're from Boston, you say "start" as "staht" or "stot", which sounds like "stop"--he is saying to "start" laying clubs down on the ground parallel to the target line.....none of this is new or earth shaking. I can't believe this guy is being paid to say (poorly) what has been written in basic golf instruction books for decades.
  • Aknight53
His Mass accent sounds like "stop" but he is saying "start".
  • TAllen
At the 3:15 mark, is he saying "stop putting clubs on the ground" or "start putting clubs on the ground"??? I have listened to this lesson many times and can't tell when he is saying start or stop. If he is saying "stop" they how are you supposed to get your alignment?
  • Steve Smith
    Start.
  • Vicpierswon
Bah HUMBUG!!! You talked about alignment, but you didn't SHOW or DEMONSTRATE what good / proper alignment is supposed to look like or should be. I was disappointed .
  • Garryc
I have noticed that with each lesson. He talks alot but doesn't really give and instructions. If the video serries is simular to this, when do you ever learn anything. He doesn't show us anything.
