Golf Lesson To Tee Or Not To Tee On A Par Three

To Tee Or Not To Tee, That Is The Question…

Welcome to another Golfing Lesson from Don “The Swing Surgeon” Trahan and the Peak Performance Golf Swing Team.

Today I tackle the question of:

“To tee or not to tee on a par three?”

Now that is the question…

Golfers from PGA Tour Players to high handicappers play par threes both ways:

Some like the ball up, some prefer it down on the deck. Some tee it up sometimes, and sometimes not.

Is there any rule or rationale for whether you tee it up or not?

Let’s start with examining if there is a rule out there for using a tee or not.

I am about 100 % certain that one of the greatest players ever, Ben Hogan, had a strong opinion on this tee it up issue. I am sure he is quoted as saying something to the effect, “I play for money, so I tee it up on par threes.”

That is certainly one powerful and positive affirmation for using the tee. I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Hogan’s par3 tee strategy and always tee it up.

Why?

Because any time you can tee it up you should.

When the ball is teed up, you improve your odds immensely for having a cleaner and more solid hit.

This is especially true for higher handicap golfers.

This improved percentage or probability for a more solid contact is the reason many pros re-tee on a par three after hitting into the water rather than use a ball drop, which may even be closer to the green.

They now know the club and the distance, but just as important, teeing it up gives them the better lie as compared to taking a chance of dropping it in the ball drop and rolling into a bad lie, or even worse, a divot.

I would also say that this tee it up rule should apply to par fours and fives when teeing off with anything but a driver.

Teeing it up improves the odds of a clean and solid impact and a better shot whether you are using a three wood, hybrid or long iron, especially for hitting a low screamer.

I have one, I guess you could call it, a quirk or maybe call it “conservation,” saving a tee and ultimately a tree:

On par threes, I only use broken tees!

I’ll scout around to find a broken tee, as I don’t want to use a good one that will get whacked in two using an iron. I really like the courses that have a container by the tee marker for players to throw their broken tees into. This makes finding a half tee easy and you have a good selection to choose from all in one place.

Now, there is one alternative to this tee it up or not issue that provides a middle ground answer, the kick tee.

Some players prefer making their own tee by kicking the heel of their foot into the ground to push up a small mound of dirt to be their tee. They stand facing the green and kick backwards.

This creates a mound with a gentle up-slope to the ball, just like it is on a tee. Many pros do this on par threes and on tee shots when they want to hit a driver or 3 wood off the deck for accuracy and or to keep it low into a head wind.

A final question is, since we are teeing it up, how high should it be?

I always play with the ball teed just slightly off the ground. I tee it up around 1/8 of an inch for wedges thru 8 iron, to a max of ¼ of an inch for the rest of my irons and hybrids. I go just a smidge higher for a 3 wood.

So, improve your odds for a cleaner, more solid impact. Tee it up on all tee shots.

That is all I have for you today, talk to you soon.

What % of Pros use a T on par threes?
  • NinerMike
    To Earl Flynn,

You will never read Don espousing Bonar's system because for the reason you so very well stated "...Obviously it takes hand/eye coordination and practice otherwise you will either be open too much or closed too early resulting in fades or hooks. But when you get it right it flies like a home run."

Only a pro who practices and plays seven days a week could approach what Bonar claims to be the essence of hitting a ball. I've asked three pros if they in fact were conscious of timing the opening and closing of the clubface in a full swing. They said their approach was to make a swing whereby such an action (if that is in fact what is truly happening) is automatic. To contemplate such an action would only bring more "paralysis to the analysis."

You stated "...If the pros all do it should it not be part of the PP swing that you promote and if not why not?"

It is all part of the PPGS system because the path of the clubface becomes an automatic event in Don's system. Nothing to promote here.

You also wrote "... AJ also promotes hitting down on the ball in order to pinch it hitting the equator whereas you promote sweeping ball. Are you saying that the PP swing that you promote will get the same results in distance and other issues as the pros get using what AJ BONAR’S METHOD promotes."

    Answer; Yes!!!

Finally you wrote "..It becomes very confusing when different experts promote their training."

Agree 100 per cent! That is why I have faith in the PPGS because it is based on the laws of physics and on the laws governing the capability of human physiology. The PPGS was built upon scientific fact, not conjecture or opinion or supposition. I also have faith in the PPGS because I absolutly have experienced an 180 degree turnaround in my ability to hit great golf shots.

Earl, the 35,000,000 million weekend golfers out there need a swing system that allows, directs the physiology of the body to align with, conform to the physics of the golf swing action. For the average golfer to concentrate on the opening and closing of the clubface can only invite inconsistency along with with a healthy dose of calamity! The PPGS clears all the cobwebs away and instills an understanding and a confidence heretofore unprecedented in mainstream golf instruction.

I agree that if the rule allows you to improve your lie: do it.
    Thanks again Don.

    Don:

I enjoyed your lessons. There is so much information, it will take some time to put all your lessons into my recently started gol game.

I have the same question as Phil: Should I hit the irons the same way from T or from ground??

Most of the time we hit the irons from the ground. When I use a T for a par 3, I can not hit the irons or hybrid consistently. Any tips??

    Thx
  • Jim Nichols
I never use teas on par 3's as I am able to get a more flush hit without one-- don't even use one when I tee off with my 1 iron either

i really enjoy all your help&tips ,my driver is workin again !@!!

    Don, you are the best.
  • EARL FLYNN
I am considering purchasing your DVD's but want to know one thing. On the back swing do you open the club face on the way back and then close it just prior to impact rotating your wrists in order to get maximum ball distance? My training thru DVD's by A.J.Bonar promotes this aspects stating that all pros without exception do this hiting ball at equator. This way you are using the club as a tool to maximize distance and results without swinging hard. Obviously it takes hand/eye coordination and practice otherwise you will either be open too much or closed too early resulting in fades or hooks. But when you get it right it flies like a home run. If the pros all do it should it not be part of the PP swing that you promote and if not why not? It becomes very confusing when different experts promote their training. AJ also promotes hitting down on the ball in order to pinch it hitting the equator whereas you promote sweeping ball. Are you saying that the PP swing that you promote will get the same results in distance and other issues as the pros get using what AJ BONAR'S METHOD promotes. If so why are not all pros using this method? It is hard to believe that taking the club back exactly as at set up and with no cocking of wrists will get same results.

Your specific insight would be appreciated in order to help me decide on purchase.

    Regards
    Earl

Any time I can take advantage of some help, I do just that. Tee it Up.
  • Morris
Harvey Penick had the same advice. It's not against the rules and you should take every advantage allowed. Tee it up!

I have enjoyed your videos, seems to make the approch to the game much less complicated.I think more people will understand, and have more fun playing. It is a game.

Today was my first day out to practice- 1 bucket of balls. After a brief warm-up and stretches I started with the Driver-"It really worked Great" kept it right down the the middle using a flag target.I actually hit some real long ones that stayed straight and used lees power to make the swing. I really can't wait to get the DVD set and hoan in on all the training tips that will someday get me at least to play PAR.

    Thanks Don

    Don,

Thanks for all the great help through your 10 free videos and readables. I just got you video set and can't wait to watch it. Just to let you know, I have been playing better and dropped my score by 5 strokes so far, and hope to get to par golf this year.

Thanks for tips and the e mails. I have really enjoyed the 10 mini lessons. I have ordered many instructional DVD's and have yet to find one that has improved my game. I just cannot hit the ball like the pros because of limited shoulder turn and natural athletic ability. I am hoping your DVD's will get me more yardage and more consistancy. I plan to order when I get back into town.

The 3/4 swing has taken the slice out of my driver, thanks a ton

Years ago I purchased Don"s first video "Straight Golf " after seeing him on the Golf Channel. Right then I new this guy was special ! He was kind enough to give me the 4th secret via e-mail and bingo, it all can together and my swing has changed for the better ever since. So in support of Don and to reinforce what knowledge I already have I purchased the new DVD"s and they, as expected, are the best Golf instruction in the game !

Don, Your common sense and simplicity approach to golfing is really appreciated. It makes you wonder why so many instructors seem to make it so complicated! Thanks, so much!

Hello everyone, I've been watching Don's videos now for the past week or so. I am impressed with the simplicity of his golf swing rationale and also the tips he passes on. I have ordered the set of DVD's and I feel sure my swing will be sweet again soon, more importantly my wife wants to learn to play. 3 years ago she had a car accident and a severe whiplash so was unable to start swinging. Now I have a great teacher in Don who really is concerned about posture and swing without doing damage. I cant wait for the postman to arrive so we can get started.

Is it the size of driver club head that dictates using those long tees (3 inch plus)?

I once heard on a golf show Raymond Floyd say "if you can put the golf ball in your hand, than do it". In other words if you can tee it up...tee it up. Peter O.
