Day 1: Grip Position And Pressure

This text will be replaced

In this first lesson I’m going to help you Get a Grip.

There are two major areas where I notice grip problems among amateurs.

They are (1) “position” and (2) “pressure”.

By “position”, I’m referring to having too strong a left hand. That is, it’s rolled over to the right. This’ll cause bad pulls and hooks if you release the club through impact.

After a few of these bad shots to the left, your brain says “No more!” to this shot, and (deciding the problem was the fact that you released your grip) forces you instead to maintain that grip through impact. And what happens is, the clubface comes through in an open position and you whack the ball off to the right.

Plus, just to mess with you even more… every now and then, the Powers of the Universe allow you to hit it right down the fairway, leaving you wondering why you can only do it once in a while and not every time, consistently.

Hello?!

It’s your grip.

Straighten it out!

Now the big problem I see with “pressure” is due to too light a grip — no pressure at all.

Amateurs are always told use a light grip.

“Hold it like a baby bird”, they’re told. Or, “like a tube of toothpaste and you don’t want to squeeze any out.”

I’ve asked many players to grip their club and lift it toward me and I grab the clubhead and pull it right out of their hands or twist it with no resistance.

This is crazy!

How can you expect to lift the club up in the backswing… and swing it down and through impact… if you’re not even holding it firmly!

Heck, I bet most of them hold a pencil more firmly than that!

You have to grip that club with a relatively firm pressure –- just like a solid, confident handshake. The big problem with a too-loose grip at the start of your swing is that it causes you to grip too tightly –- suddenly! –- at the end of your swing.

This happens because, in the downswing — when the club is speeding up and gravity is helping pull the club down, and centrifugal force is pulling it away — your brain senses the club is sliding or slipping and it tells you to grab it.

So, grip that club firmly with a medium pressure in the first place — with equal pressure and firmness in both hands. And then maintain that pressure throughout the entire swing.

Okay, that’s it for today.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this short lesson and put it to good use.

Just doing this one change has helped many of my students drop a few more strokes.

And it might just help you do the same, too.

Stay tuned for lesson number two tomorrow where I will reveal the master mistake having to do with cocking your wrist in your back swing.

In the meantime, if you want more information on how my PGA Pro students maintain a longer, straighter and more consistent swing, check out my Peak Performance Golf Swing DVD Series at:

You can try everything completely at MY risk.

In fact, if you don’t IMMEDIATELY drop at least 5 strokes from your game the first time you put the videos to use, I’ll give you your money back PLUS you can keep the videos just for your trouble.

See you tomorrow!

I got my first video on 23/04/10 where are the other 9 after you said there was a video every day.I have already paid and all I have is 1.Don t you guys answer your emails this is bullshit. What a con.All I wanted is help for my son and I get this shit.
  • Wow, nice! How's the rest of your vocabulary? First, why in the world would you pay for the "FREE" videos? The 10 are free. Secondly, if you bought the series, then look at the MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS that follow every article. You question is addressed there. The series does not come to your email. It's downloadable videos and it's in the members section.
  • BPPerk
If you purchased the videos you need to look in the members area for the download ... the link is at the top of the page. If you're missing any of the ten free lessons .. follow this link. http://members.peakperformancegolfswing.com/Los...

I was astounded at the speed of the filling of my request. Thank You.
I play on Tuesdays, so, tomorrow is going to be the test of your suggestions on grip and pressure. What you have suggested is what I do not do. Wish me luck.

Thank you for the lesson. Your viedeo was crystal clear and the audio was clear and loud. I have fought my swing because, as you say, I was holding the club incorrectly. My grip has always been firm, but my alignment has been wrong.
  • Elkgrove2007
Thanks for the video... great sound and clear picture.
  • Glenn
I received my first lesson on line with perfect picture & sound within about 5 minutes of sign in. Thanks
Going to the driving range to try out. I just started this game in May & so far
very frustrated but patient. Lots of good support from my golfing friends.

The quality of the sound on both your initial group of sales videos and on the video about grip and pressure is not good. Your speech is interrupted quite often and then it resumes. Can that be corrected?

Sounds like a connection issue. If you're experiencing a buffering issue, let the video run through once and then replay it which usually plays it from your cache. Another option is to use firefox as your browser with the download helper add-in and simply save the videos to your computer and watch them without the need to stream (works for youtube vids as well).

thank you for the first tip

Gret tip, while at the range this morning I was hooking the ball a lot with my hybrids.
  • Darm
Looks good I'll try it; I seem to hit a lot of drives to the right because everyone tells me I don't follow through....I feel my grip is correct; however I now have golfers elbow haven't played in 4 weeks still painful doing physio 3 times a week; what's your thought on a "cortisone shot'
  • JOE
You just answered my question as to why I frequently hit the ball to the right. I have concentrated on gripping the club with my left hand in front of me instead to the left side of me; then, bringing it to my front and center to place the right hand in the proper position linking it to the left hand.

I will try this change, hope it corrects the slice to the right.

    thx ill try and reply

Had a bad echo on the sound on the first instalment, very difficult to understand

Glad there is a written version, hope the next instalment is clearer.

Hard to believe in your promises when the 1st is not met. I received ONE of the promised 10 BIG MISTAKES (FREE). My thinking in not immediately ordering the package offered was to see if I gleaned anything from the free offer.
  • Marthadlayton
Thanks for the good tips! Lookingforward to the next nine.

This is the first of your lessons I have received and I look forward to reviewing it more closely once I have recuperated from hip surgery. To facilitate future viewing on any available computer I would like to record my lessons on to a disc and/or flashdrive. Is this possible and, if so, do I need special equipment? I am not all that familiar with computer operations. Thanks, CRF
  • BPPerk
For the free tips .... use Firefox as your browser with the DownloadHelper plugin. You can save the flash videos to your hard drive, flash drive, dvd, cd, or anything else you'd like.

While you're recovering from your surgery, you can work on your grip.

Sandy: Makes a lot of sense. How do I receive the next nine videos?

I am a 2 handicapper and course record holder at my local course. I have always gripped the club with a medium pressure and adopt the straight left wrist stance with my irons ie hands ahead of the clubhead. However, with my driver I have to break my left wrist at address and have the clubhead level with my hands rather than behind to achieve the slightly upward sweep off the tee. My natural shot with all clubs is a draw.
  • Brennangolf
on reading your post , i used to draw everything from driver to iorns but was never a clean striker of the golf ball ...After going to a 23 year old pro he had me fadeing the ball so i would be able to get a softer landing from my iorns and more control from my drives ....the trick is all about hip clearnce , see i used my hands to control the ball and not my body , so you sound i bit the way i was ....a long poll was placed at the back of me as i thought that i was swinging the club straight back , i keept hitting this poll on my back swing so i was bringing the club around my body and not straight , then i turned my right foot in as far it would go [ pointing in the position of your target ] that would shorten my back swing and clear my hips ... i can not belive how well i am hitting the ball and how far .... ask you pro to go through this drill with you , it is class and i bet you drop to one or scratch ...best of luck .....brian 6 handicap [ ireland ]

You are indeed right about the tendency for some peoples' hands to hang as you describe. However, if you then put your left hand on the club in your "natural position" which would be very strong, then you have to likewise rotate your right hand severely to the right to come underneath the club handle in order for your hands to be placed on the club with palms facing each other, which is essential to a solid grip. Try it and you'll see what I mean. My hands tend to do what you describe, but I find with a neutral grip, it feels most natural and my hits are more solid and straight.

    Hope this helps.
  • Waymar72
Some peoples' hands tend to hang beside their body in a more knuckles out natural position (natural strong grip tendancy). Then they have to physically use their wrist muscles to turn their hand to the left to attain a neutral grip. This in turn can give the opposite affect of a strong grip for others. They will be fighting the wrists tendancy to return to their natural position and actually make the club face open in the back swing and at impact. Unless they start with a "natural and slightly strong" grip they may have to make an extra effort to roll their wrists back left more than normal to square the face at impact. This may create a "perfect timing with an extra effort only" condition for consistant accuracy. Let me know what you think. As far as grip pressure I think you are spot on, but not too tight !!!Thanks Don.
  • Wparkers
I am a very new player and haven't even played at a course. However, when speaking about holding the wrist straight I could really relate to that teaching. I have hit a few times and the drivers head spins down-ward after hitting the ball. One, not squaring up and two, grip not firm enough.

    Thanks for the tip...
  • Bbbarry
I watched this video before going out this morning and made my best score ever. Going from the light grip my pro' advised to a firm one made all the difference. But the ground was hard and the ball did run well. Let's see what day 2 brings....
  • Diana
this is the grip i use and it works for me with the woods. i cannot hit my irons to save my soul. and i can't hit off the T very well either. i have a slow smooth swing but am up to 150 yrd with the driver. this video was helpful.
  • Steve Smith
    Just something to consider.
My wife started playing three years ago. She wasn't doing very well with her irons either but hit fairway woods fairly well. My son bought her a cheap set of clubs with all hybrids 3 iron down to sand wedge. She found these very easy to hit and now really enjoys playing the game. The real surprise to me was that the hybrid sand wedge makes it really easy for her to get out of bunkers. With that club she is now an above average bunker player.
  • Judy Galvan
MAKES PERFECT SENSE! I really like the commonality of Don's EASY WORDS! He doesn't say 50,000 things..... he just cuts to the chase! Thanks Don, looking forward to hitting a few buckets tomorrow to concentrate on grip and grip pressure!
  • Barry Berkowitz
I bend my left arm and the club goes inside creating an over the top correction on the finish? i want to understand how important it is to keep a straight left arm through the swing.
  • steve
Got it on the sound. Thanks -- Steve
  • steve
Can not get the audio to play. Yes, I have the sound on and the volume up, but no sound. Any ideas?

    Thanks -- Steve
  • Greg
Thanks for the first video. I found it useful.
I have not received the 2nd video and several days have lapsed since I received the first one. Thanks.
