The Top 10 “Amateur” Mistakes
Most PGA Tour Players Make
Without Even Realizing…

And How To Avoid Making The Same Amateurish
Mistakes That Are Keep You From Shooting Low Scores!

This text will be replaced

Enter your name and primary email below,
and PGA Master Professional Don Trahan
will show you these 10 golf swing “blunders”,
and how to start hitting the ball
longer, straighter and more consistently
on your very NEXT round…

Dear Fellow Golfer,

If you want to IMMEDIATELY have a more consistent, powerful and pain-free golf swing… and do it without taking a single lesson or spending one red cent… then the 10 free videos below will show you how.

Here’s the scoop:

My name is Don Trahan… although lot of people call me the “Swing Surgeon”. I’m a PGA Master Professional and personal coach to 2-time PGA Tour trophy winner DJ Trahan.

I recently decided to start to reveal the biggest, “score killing” mistakes I’ve seen in my over 25 years of playing golf and teaching PGA Tour Players and Professionals. So I put together 10 videos to help you avoid the same mistakes I’ve seen amateurs and professionals make over and over again…

Here is just a small “taste” of what’s in these free videos:

  • The one thing you must never do (especially on the first hole) after a bad golf shot. (If you’ve ever had a frustrating day on the course this is probably why!)
  • The “Big-Turn-Conspiracy”… A dirty little secret about ‘big turn’ swings your local PGA Pro does NOT want you to know. (Most golf teachers would be out of business if everyone knew the truth you’re about to learn.)
  • Why the stance most PGA Pros teach is just flat out WRONG. (Hint: A wider stance will NOT give you more power. But this one tweak most certainly will.)
  • The #1 WORST mistake you can make with your wrist when swinging a golf club. (Even if you do everything else “right”, your game will fall apart if you make this common mistake.)
  • What to do with your eyes every single time you hit a golf ball. (Here’s a little known fact: Your eyes automatically show you an “optical illusion” on a golf course. And this is one of the main reasons most golfers have such terrible accuracy. Simply do this with your eyes next time you tee off, and watch your shots land exactly where you want them to.)
  • Exactly how tight to hold your golf club for maximum distance. (Forget bogus advice about treating the club like an “open tube of toothpaste”. That’ll destroy your game. Hold it like this, instead.)
  • A terrible technique (taught in all the golf magazines and videos) that almost guaranteed to injure your back. (And is one of the reasons why a shocking number of PGA Tour golfers spend so much time in surgery.)
  • How to add up to 10 yards to your drives in your very NEXT round (even this afternoon!)… just by changing your grip.
  • A simple way to “position” your arms to be virtually “Slice-Proof”. (If you slice a lot, this secret alone will change your life.)
  • A.F.A.P.: How memorizing this acronym will almost force your shots to sail farther and straighter down the fairway. (I have to admit, this secret is a bit weird. But it works like crazy.)
  • And much, much more.

  4. Don:

I bought your book and have watched the free videos. During the second week of trying the PPGS, I made about a 12 stroke reduction in my score. Drives went from slices and hooks to down the center. The only problem I continue to have is looking up and topping the ball. That is the main thing that restricts my play at this point. I am conscious of the act and it is noticed as well by my playing partners.

I’m 72 retired and live in a gated community with two courses and now play four or more days per week and loving it. To keep things in perspective, I gave up golf in my late twenties and only got back to the game three years ago when we move back to the midwest from New England after being there for 40 years.

  5. jim says:

how do i straighten out a swing that always cuts across the ball?

  6. Pamlaw says:

I have the same problem as Jim, a swing that cuts across the ball and causes it to bounce 90 degrees on landing.

  7. Gregg Jones says:

    Surge,

Site looks great! Glad to see you doing well. See you soon..

  8. David Milne says:

    Don,
Thanks for the first free video, changed my grip to PPGS and instantly put 10-15 yards on my drive with no effort, cannot wait for the rest of the lesson. I may stand a chance at competitions at my club with all the scratch and low handicappers.

Once again, many thanks for sharing your wisdom.

    Dave

  9. Bruce Weems says:

    Don:

You have gone into a great deal on your instruction manual on the full swing and this has really helped me in hitting the ball solidly and in the right direction. I’m really amazed at how easy it is to draw and fade the ball with minor adjustments as you suggest. So I’m convinced that you are teaching the right swing…at least for me.

Now my question is what is your approach to hitting the in between wedge shots? For example if I hit my approach wedge 100 yards and need to hit a 40, 50, or 75 yd shot with that club how do you modify your swing to do that. Are you using exacly the same setup and swing but using the dave peltz method with a swing at say at the 7, 9, 11 positions on a clock?

Are there any video instruction that you have put together to illustrate your technique?

Thanks Don for putting the fun back into my golf game and I’m eager to learn more from you.

  10. Robert Lewis says:

I have noticed that all pro (and other good golfers), on the down swing keep their right elbow (right handed golpher) in close to their body. I find this to be the most difficult (and I’m sure) one of the most important parts of the golf swing.

I notice it in your swing video. Clearing the hips , as well as other aspects of the swing, all contibute.

I am almost using a Jim Furyk swing, out to in, to accomplish this.

Any thoughts and/or ideas to solve this?

  11. dontrahan says:

    Cliff,

I would suggest calling customer service at 888-84 swing (79464) and Ken should be able to help figure out the problem and correct it.

    Don

  12. Mike Ziehl says:

    Don,

Got your book and the free videos and went to work on implementing the swing. Played one round and scored about normal – just over 100. I was having my doubts, but I persevered and went to the range several times to keep on working. Yesterday I played a round and shot 93. I still had three triples, three three putts and 2 penalty strokes for balls I put in water hazards. A low to mid 80’s score is definitely on the horizon. I hit 10 fairways which I have never done and my drives were all in the short grass. My one “problem” shot seems to be hitting my irons fat a few times a round. But when I execute things right I hit the ball straighter than I ever have with all my clubs. I can’t wait to get back on the course again. Thanks a million is all I can say…

  13. Laurence Byrne says:

I am impressed by you golf instruction. It all makes sense and it works. I would love to receive your golf videos free of charge.

    Thank you

    Laurence.

  14. Jim says:

I signed up for your website. I have your swing surgeon video and it’s helped me a lot. I am still having trouble putting your swing to the driver. Can’t seem to get the results with the longest club in my bag. It’s hard for me to take it up like my irons and pop back up without either hitting the ground first or popping the ball up. I seem to need to take a more circular swing because the club’s longer. I’m a short guy, 5′6″ so should I cut the shaft on the driver? Any other suggestions?….Thanks, Jim

  22. Mike says:

    Surge,

I’m from Germany, 51 and have been playing about 9 years, my handicap is 15.4.

5 years ago someone crashed into my car with about 60 mp/h. Since this day I have back problems, which limit my ability to play golf because my vertebras tend to be easily dislocated when I make a bad move. That’s why I haven’t competed in any tournament for years.

Now I heard about your swing method.

So let’s keep it short and sweet:
I watched your “Setup, From the Ground Up” video, went to the driving range and gave it a try:
Would one bucket of golf balls be enough to adopt your swing?

    The answer is YES!

I could do my training without having any back problems. And even better: I started to hit longer and straighter golf shots.

The next day I gave it a try on the golf course. Normally I score in a range from 85 to 90. This time I scored an 80! The first time I ever did this! Simply amazing having fun playing golf, scoring low and still not having any back problems or pain.

So thanks a lot for your free tips and videos!!!

    Kind regards
    Mike

PS: Sometimes I tend to hook a very little bit. Why could this be? Thanks!

  25. Doug T says:

I am looking forward to learning your techniques to improve my golf game-mainly my inconsistent driver/3 wood and slicing.

  26. dontrahan says:

    Doug T.,

Read my answer to Paul Giffin directly above you about a shorter driver. I am also going in the next day or two address too long a driver in my daily article using one of my lessons where the student’s driver was too long and include comments he made relevant to that issue and how choking down on the driver really improved his swing and drives.

My main problem is hitting fat shots, Or manage to hit the ball first, but still drive the club into the ground, and its imposible to have a good finish from there. I’ve been told I’m casting, I’m chopping at the ball. I’ve tried the Stack and tilt, spent thousands of dollars at Golf teck lessons, but still have the same problem.

    Thanks

  32. Mary Ann Clark says:

I am new to your simplified swing. Hit two buckets yesterday and had difficulty shifting my hips latterly. Feels like I am turning my hips on the back swing. I’d like some tips to help. I decided to give your system a try because ever since I hit the 70’s (age not score), my game has been up and down, 79 one day 91 the next. I’ve always had a long flat swing which works great with the driver. I can bang it out there 200 Yards and chunk or top an easy short iron. I have always felt that I hit the shots best when I make a big shoulder turn. Hard to get comfortable with your 70 degree turn.

  34. Pete Lanting says:

    Don,

Every part of my game needs improvement and I’m looking forward to learning from you. I guess if I had to choose a part of my game I’d like to see immediate improvement in it would be the driver.

  35. gregory says:

    Don,
Thanks, for the ‘freebie’ video golf lessons! My accuracy has improved tremendously, as a result of the slight grip change you advise in your videos! My distance has yet to show improvement. No matter what club I’m hitting from my ‘hand-me-downs, I can only hit between 150 to 175 yards… driver, fairway woods, or irons, I rarely hit the ball further… but, my friend can use my club(s) and still hit further than I can with the same club! what did I miss in your videos? I started golfing avidly this year and love everything about the game! And notice a 15 stroke improvement since last year. I soak up every little tidbit of instruction I can. Your videos have been very helpful! But I have yet to use them out on the course and look forward to that this week!

  36. Sylvia Hatton says:

    Hi Don
When I received your email telling me about your PPGS I felt I was offered a lifeline. For the last 6 years, since rupturing my bicep tendon, I lost more and more length and my hadicap was soaring. On my drives it felt like I was hitting a brick wall. Had some lessons and was told all those things you say not to do. Now, just 4 weeks into PPGS, I am hitting the ball much longer and very straight. Already I have won a trophy and came first in my division this week in a medal and reduced my handicap by 1 shot. Today I played 3 under. I am just so delighted. For the first time in 6 years I have no pain in my arm when I play and am able to ‘follow through’ which I could not do on my old swing. PPGS really works and now I look forward to playing once again and I dont feel embarrassed about my poor golf in front of my friends. Thank you so much. Now I just need to learn to chip consistently!!

  37. Joe Mekli says:

Hopefully these videos help- my game is very inconsistant- problem with my driver

  38. Jacob Buchanan says:

Hello Don I just got my first video thank you. I’m what you call a “born slice”. I play baseball and I was always taught to hit the ball down third baseb line. In order to do that you have to open you hips. Well I do the same in my golf swing I open my hips and I slice the ball really bad. In your first video you say a “stong grip” makes you pull or hook the ball. Well my dad told me the same thing and I did it and it work for about 3 swings and then I was sliceing again even with a strong grip. So how do I fix this??

  45. Randy says:

    Hi Don

I Just got you ten free video’s. I am 70’s shooter i am hoping to get into the 60’s more often. Hope this will help. I played with DJ in the pro am at Forest Oaks golf course in NC at the Chrysler Classic win he got a Double eagle on the par 5. He hit an awesome 3 wood. I know DJ may not remember who played with but I know he didn’t forget that shot. I was the one who was hitting the Bang-o-matic driver and my son was my caddie. HAD A BLAST

    Best regards

would like to be more consistent and add some distance, my irons are a good 2 to 3 clubs less then friends of the same level as me.

  50. I am being told that my arms are coming out in front of my body as I hit the ball rather than my body turning first followed by the arms. Am I being told correctly?

  51. Phill says:

    Hi Don,
I d/loaded your DVD’s last night and went straight to the range today after work.
Yes I did notice a big difference in hitting my iron’s long straight ,consistant, and in the sweet spot.
I also hit some good drives.
My bad drive was a slight fade…would that be to early on the release? I noticed in your captions hitting the driver you had a lot of lag.
Anyway just wanted to say thankx and I will be around this site often.

  53. Nicholas J. Teklu says:

Two years ago my wife gave me beginner’s golf clubs as a gift for father’s day . I have never played golf before. I will be 55 in January 2010. I have been on the golf course only twice in my life time; however, I have been going to the drive range twice a week for the past two summers. Since I live in the Midwest, from October to early April it is cold. I love golf and I do watch major PGA tournaments on TV. I am very much interested to learn the basics to enjoy the game and to be competitive. I need to learn how to swing and heat the ball straight, putting, and I want to know when to use what club at what range and to be consistent.
I hope your video will help me.

    Sincerely,

    Nicholas

    Hey Don

I have a major problem with my driver. I slice it most of the time ( im sure you hear that all the time)I’m a 10 capper, but struggling off the tee is killing me. What i don’t get is my lob to 6 iron i draw and everything else is a fade to slice. I think what chokes me, is that when i do hiy it strait i can be good up to 330 yrds, but were talkin 1 out of every 25. I am very comfortable w/ all my other clubs, they usually do what i want them to. I have tried many techniques to fix this, but i think in the long run it has made things worse. I caught your site and thought you might have a great traing aid to help me fix this.
    Chris

  60. dontrahan says:

    Chris,

I have written this hundreds of times in blogs and there are articles in clubfitting that will add more to what I will say now. Since you are hitting many of your clubs well and other especially your driver badly, the problem is likely not you but your clubs. There is a good chance the shafts in your clubs especially the driver since it si slicing badly are too weak for your swing speeds especially as you can hit it quite far when you catch one.

My recommendation is to find a PGA professional club fitter or a certified club fitter and get the flex checked in your shafts. The next part of the program is for them to check your swing speeds which will tell them what flex you do need. If your shafts especially the driver are too weak, they oyu will need to get them re-shafted.

    Hi Don,

I look forward to receiving your videos.
I play off 4 but would dearly love to get to 2 or better but am now 46.

I feel that my problems are as follows :

    1. Lack of Consistency off the tee (miss too many fairways)
    2. Poor technique out of Bunkers
    3. Chipping isnt bad but would benefit from a greater variety
    4. Putting – oh my God. I can give myself plenty of birdie opportunities but I cant sink the 10 – 15 footer consistantly.

Any help or guidance would be very much appreciated.

I was wondering which golf Club would be the best to start playing???
A lot of people here in Portugal are saying that the 7 Iron is the best, is that right??
And another thing, I don’t have money to buy any of those expensive golf clubs from Callaway for example. I’m looking for something around 50 dollars. Which brands would you recommend??
What do you thing about Ram, Forgan or Texan???

    Thanks a lot,
I’m really anxious to start trying your way of playing golf shown on the free Videos!!! (I’m waiting for my golf club. Portugal sucks about golf stores)

    DON:
    I LOVE YOUR GOLF TIPS.
    HERE IS MY PROBLEM:
I ONLY HAVE SCAR TISSUE WHERE MY RIGHT ROTATOR CUFF WAS AS A RESULT OF 3 SURGERIES. I CAN BACKSWING TO THE CATCHER’S MIT AND TURN TO A POSITION WITH MY LEFT SHOULDER UNDER MY CHIN.
I PLAY 9 HOLES ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK FROM THE FORWARD TEES AND MANAGE TO BARELY BREAK 100.
PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE ON AN EXERCISE OR SWING POSITION TO IMPROVE.
    KINDEST PERSONAL REGARDS,
    MITCH

Your question is totally an unfair one. To ask an individual who does not know you or your medical history to recommend a particular physical exercise that could possibly cause even more damage is totally inappropriate.

Your question should be directed to the physical therapist or chiropractor whom your surgeon has endorsed.

How to hit the ball straight when using woods from the tee and low irons from fairways

  98. Ronald Green says:

Your system is helping me with my irons, but I cannot hit a decent drive with your “vertical plane” swing. I have no problem hitting nice drives with a flatter swing. What do you think?

  99. Jim Baughman says:

    I am 70 years old…have a 16 handicap…..recently changed to graphit shafts…

Why would I be hitting the 7 iron and the 5 iron just about the same distance….maybe 6-8 yards differenct….

    Thank you….
