Fixing Bob’s Back

FIXING BOB’S BACK

My new student, Bob, was pretty typical. Pretty good player, big turn, sore back, gloomy outlook. He told me on the phone that he’d gone from a five to a 15 because of back problems.

“I get my shoulders back to 90 degrees, like they all tell you, but it hurts like h*ll. My chiropractor said I better think about giving up golf or see you,” he said.

Some of my best friends are chiropractors. We set up an appointment for the next day.

Bob showed up right on time. He said after his doc realigned his back he was feeling much better. Then he informed me he felt he could make the big turn in the backswing. “A really big turn!” he emphasized.

I was a little taken aback. I asked him if he knew what I taught.

“The doc said something about a ‘back friendly’ swing, so I figured you’re my guy,” Bob said, smiling.

When we got to the lesson tee he started to pull a club out of his bag.

“You won’t need that right now,” I told him.

He was kind of shocked. “Don’t you want to see my swing?”

“Not yet. First we’re going to fix your back,” I said.

“The doc already fixed my back,” Bob protested.

I asked him if he knew my nickname. Bob didn’t know. “They call me the Swing Surgeon, and I’m really going to fix your back.”

Bob winced slightly, but I assured him it wouldn’t hurt.

“O.K. Now assume your address position. Let your arms hang down. Now, out there, along the aiming line, imagine there’s an open window. Now, swing your right hand up, like in a backswing, as if you were going to toss a ball underhanded through the window. When your hand reaches the top of the backswing, stop and check its position,” I explained.

It was obvious that Bob was wondering if he had made a great error coming to my lesson tee. Somewhat sheepishly, he raised his right hand. When he got to the top I grabbed his hand and pointed out its position.

“Hold that position for just a few more seconds,” I said. Then I placed a club across his shoulders. “How much did you turn?” I asked him.

“Hardly any,” he replied, still puzzled.

I gently turned his shoulder and the club to 90 degrees and asked, “Why didn’t you turn your back to the target, that open window, to throw the ball?”

“I can’t see the window from here. I wouldn’t throw a ball for here, it isn’t natural. Well, I guess I could throw it from here, but I sure wouldn’t be very accurate,” Bob replied.

“Correct-a-mundo, Bob! If you can’t throw it accurately from back here, how can you expect to hit a golf ball accurately with a turn like that? You only need to turn 70 degrees. From your setup position, while holding your lower body stable, turn your shoulder until your left upper arm, shoulder to elbow, gets over your toe line. That’s all the turn you need. From there you just lift your arms up with no more turn. That’s it, 70 degrees. That’s all the turn you need!” I explained.

Bob was speechless. I had him throw the “ball” through the “window” a few times, so he could get the feel of the limited backswing.

As he was throwing, he kept repeating to himself, “This is amazing, this is amazing.”

Yes, Bob, it is.

Don, your lessons have really improved my game. I do have one question. In my backswing I do a quarter turn with my forearms and keep my wrist solid. It seems that as I watch golf most players do this. Am I wrong? Am I being decieved by my eyes. I have done this for years and have incorporated it into my new swing you have taught me. Any problems doing this? Could you elaborate on this. Thanks Rick

Good evening, I hope you guys had a great East Sunday. I subscribed to your web page a few months back. I an embarrassed to admit that I have not purchased any of the CD's but I have saved the free videos. I would have already purchased the lessons offered but I just purchased a Vector Pro for my new shop. I will purchase your material as soon as I get the shop open. I have been building and fitting clubs for over six years in my home shop. That is about to change as we open a full service shop the first of June that will be in a high volume golfing area. Thank you for being here and for the service that you offer for players. From what I have seen and read any clients that I fill needs the assistance that your program offers will be referred to you.

Hi, I like to read you, everytime I have a chance to get on my computer I check my e-mails hoping that I have some from you guys. Reading you and watching your videos I was able to correct my swing for my irons using the 3/4 turn which I find it smooth. I tried it with my driver which works pretty good too but I am getting only 200 yards with it, it is pretty much straight but I have the tendacy to go more than 3/4 turn and when I do that I eithr slice or pull the ball, can you help me on that.
    Thank you.
    Denis

I guess the biggest question thAT I have for you is Do the lessons work for lefty's??????????

For me it is hard to grasp the concept when I have to covert everthing from right handed to left handed people.
  • Benno Muench
I am patiently waiting for you to talk about getting out of the bunkers by the green

I so much agree with the 70 percent turn. A terrific teacher from early to mid-20th century, Ernest Jones, promoted swinging the clubhead. He didn't talk of swinging the shoulders or turning the back. JUST SWING THE CLUBHEAD. Many pros over the years have followed his suggestions and became terrific.

Keep up the good suggestions. I love them.

How can I learn to keep my head still and behind the ball? Willier

I have a bad back and neck. Don's swing is a good starting point and should be taken seriously. There is one other problem though, the acceleration of the swing through the ball creates pressure on your upper back due the centerfugal force being applied by your arms and club. I have noticed more neck pain especially at the finish. I found that swinging from 12 to 12 helps. Distance is lost a bit but the accuracy is still there. I just take one more club to compensate for this. Don's swing has helped me tremendously when it comes to playing another day without the pain. Thank you Don. Jim

Don, I am 71 years old and had back surgery 2 years ago. Since that time my handicap has gone from a 12 to a 15 to a 20. (wrong direction) I no longer am capable of making a turn and am somewhat intrigued by your swing. However, I am not sure about the theory behind it. Do you think your theory helps someone with only a minimum shoilder turn?

    Hello, Don;

I've been enjoying reading your article, I also have some issue about "Back" pain? Currently, I am taking lesson from local CGTF golf instructor in Toronto?

Every time I finished swing, the posture of my left shoulder is about 90 degree angle, I feel the pinch in my back?

Can you tell me what seems to be my problem here? My instructor told me that, I'm doing O.K.

Thank you once again, I would love to have your command soon.

    Sincerely,

    Steve Lee
