Finish, Part 2

Yesterday I discussed my first lesson with Larry, his setup and swing and his physical issues of a stiff neck and shoulders, with quite a limited degree of rotation that hurt him and medical help had not cured.  As a refresher course, Larry had been taking lessons for a few years and has been changed over to a rotational swing.  His setup was pretty good as well as his alignment.  His backswing was more vertical than rotational, but had a little too much turn that got him deep and laid off.  His big problem was that his finish was completely rotational.  He started his downswing by pulling his left/forward hip and shoulders as fast as he could.  With that he ended up finishing with his torso facing way left of his target.  His arms collapsed around his body and his club was pointing way left at around 9:00 0’clock or in baseball terms, pointing into the left field bleachers.

Larry thought his problem was his backswing.  Sure his backswing was far from perfect, but that was not the main problem. His finish was his downfall, both for his inconsistent ball striking, direction and, as I told him, likely the cause of his neck and shoulder pain.

In the infancy days of teaching after figuring out the PPGS swing, I would always start working on correcting the backswing if it was not 3/4, limited turn and, of course, standing the club up to vertical.  But over time I came to realize something very important that altered my focus and changed my course of action most of the time.

I began to see a pattern that if a student had a descent backswing but an awful follow through to finish, fixing the backswing very rarely improved ball striking and flight to what would be considered descent improvement.  After a lot of thought, I came to the conclusion that if the student had even just a descent backswing, maybe I should fix the finish first for better results.  Why?  Because my conclusion was that since hitting the ball better, both in ball striking and direction were the #1 criteria for defining a good lesson, then I had to focus on the forward upswing.  Why?  Because you don’t hit the ball with your backswing.  You hit it with your forward upswing.  So that is why Larry’s first lesson was all about getting to a dynamically balanced T – Finish.

When I was wrapping up the lesson, I gave Larry the #1 forward upswing drill, Skipping Rocks.  Since the weather has been rather cold and not good for playing golf, I mentioned that maybe he should get a small golf hitting matt and some golf Wiffle balls to hit inside his garage or basement or off the back of his house.  You can feel the impact point on the face and they will start off like a real ball straight out from where the clubface is pointed. In many cases the flight shape will also be the same as a real ball.  The key is even Wiffle balls will give good feed back on your path, impact point and face angle relative to your path and target.  All good information to determine if he was improving his swing to the T – Finish.
t finish front

Larry came straight back on hitting Wiffle balls off a matt, saying that a pro once told him that was no good and dangerous.  I agreed if one was hitting down on the ball big time.  But if one was swinging up to the T – Finish with the thought of tearing the grass out of the ground, nipping the ball off the ground, then hitting off mats was awesome.  It really gives the feeling of the club skipping or ricocheting off the mat, which is the feeling you want hitting off turf.
rercoil

The last thing I discussed with Larry was that if his swing had some responsibility for his neck and shoulder pain and lack of range of motion, swinging to the T – Finish could very much be a remedy to lessening the pain and freeing up and improving his range of motion.  He really liked that thought and with that hope, along with helping his swing and ball flight, the lesson was done.

I got a call from Larry that same night.  He couldn’t wait to practice and play.  He actually brought his wife and went to his club, hit some balls on the range and then played nine.  He reported that his ball striking was much improved on the range and on the course.  He hit the ball the best and shot one of the best scores he has in years.  He said that every shot that was blocked or pulled, he definitely missed his T – Finish going past and around his torso.  He said overall he was really happy and for the first time in a few years he had some confidence in his swing and solid hope for getting his game back, maybe even better than ever.

I love hearing students being happy about swinging and hitting it better, especially really sick ones after their first lesson.  Just before ending the call Larry gave me an, “Oh Yeah, by the way, thought you would like to know, after practicing and playing, my neck feels the best it has in years.  You were right about the T – Finish maybe helping my neck.”

Oh Yeah, I love hearing about students hitting it better.  But I really love hearing that the PPGS has helped their stress, strain and pain problems.  That really makes my day!

Id like to thank you for having this site, i was a natural left handed player played around the 8 to 10 handicap til my accident. when i bust both legs and severley damaged and broke my left arm and wrist. I gave golf away thinking id never play again. then one day my nephews said they were gunna go to a pro to learn how to play golf, i told him to just go to the driving range first and just learn to hit the ball, thern i found this site, i love golf as a game and as a way of teaching the youth little things they can use in life to come. honesty, focus, manners, dress sence and most of all the love of just playing this game. since reading this site i got my nephew to purchase your dvds, and

I studied them for a month went down to the local driving range and starting using the technique standing on the other side of the ball in november 2009 i was playing off a 30 handicap as of last night i am playing off a 23.4

Since i came back into the game i am now coaching 3 juniors and 3 senior players using your technique, since Dec. 2009
Nigel(48) was on a 23 is now in 12.4 predicted 11.8 next cycle,

    Armand(14) was on 24hc now on 13.9 predicted 12.5.

    Jay(12) was on 28hc now on 21 predicted 20.6

Dee(31)just learner to game no hc was playing twilight shootin 65 to 75 over 9 holes After one session with me using your technique last night shot a 51 over 9 holes and added a 2 to her great enjoyment of her round

Don(65) also a learner and Dees father was also shooting high 70s over 9 holes he shot a pb of 52 out and 53 in and when i spoke with him on the phone said he wasnt even tired after playuing his 18 holes as normally he is in the bath and into bed after playing 18 holes

Many members of my local golf club know how im into you techneque and how i am into junior golf and the need to get more kids involved in golf. your technique makes golf seem so easy.As i say to the people im coaching golf is an easy game lolol just along the way we ourselves make it difficult.

Well because of your technique I have been given the nik name at my club as THE DON they say Im not diverse to using all tactics needed to get juniors to play and make it fun as well, but i also teach the codes and ediquette golf firmly installed into each person i try to help in the game. And the basic style you show has made this game i love so enjoyable again and dare i say it so much easier

    Many thanks from New Zeraland

    Surge,

The weather in the NE has been great the last few days so a local course opened. I hadn't had a chance to do much with the swing over the winter, but went to the course and played nine. I did n't score that well due to some skulled wedges, but I impressed myself with my drives, some of my best in a long time. The best part was that I wqent out with a sore back after cleaning up after our wind storm and I was able to swing pain free. I am really looking forward to getting out there again. Your method works!
  • Greetings, Don;
I am a long time golfer, 51 years old, and I have recently been having all kinds of trouble with my game! Generally speaking, I have always played off between a 4-10 handicap, depending upon how much time I can find to play.
So hitting the ball badly is not an option! It has been distressing and has all but ruined my enjoyment of the game!
So it was with eager anticipation that I signed on to your 10 free internet lessons.
To say that the results were emphatic is an understatement! After just TWO of the lessons I went down to the local course and played 4 balls for 7 holes (all I had time for).
Don, I have been gripping the club wrong for the last two years or so, for crying out loud! I straightened up the grip, took a firmer hold of the driver, a nice easy three quarter swing and BAM! Off it flew, straight and true...but left! because my alignment was all wrong. It's the old story, my friend...you acquire a bad habit then start to compensate and then it all turns to bulldust!
Balls 2, 3 and 4 went straight down the middle and long with it! It was actually a huge relief, the ease with which it all happens! After the 7 holes (28 holes equivalent with the 4 balls) I was six over par. Yes I made some mistakes, but it's early days. Generally speaking, however, it was a quantum leap in terms of ball striking and ease of swing! Brilliant!
Now I am keen to get out and play more!
Don, I reckon you are a certifiable genius. And the reason is that you have broken the game down and made it easy to put a good swing into practice. All the stress has gone. The easy nature of the swing is very simple to apply. And a good, SIMPLE swing is going to assist MOST golfers best!
So for all of this, thanks a million, buddy! If you are ever in New Zealand come and stay with us at the Lodge...and I will pay the bill, pal! You have given me back enjoyment of the game! So I owe you one!

    Surge,
I signed up for your free golf swing videos last September,2010. And I receive your daily emails with golf tips. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of it and put your tips into practice and play. Your tips and free videos have dropped at least 25 strokes off my card since I started playing two years ago. I am 59 years of age, in good health and your tips have added a great deal of pleasure to my game. I am no longer frustrated by a "bad" shot and I'm hitting more "fairways and greens" than ever! I'll never get to the PGA level but, be assured that when I come off the links, I am a happily satisfied golfer because of your coaching. You are a golfer's best strategy out there! Thanks!!!

I am not sure if you will get this one or not but I have been watching the honda today and I have seen players at plus 7 to minus 6 but not a mention of D.J I wonder if it,s the fact that you don,t teach what these guy,s assume is the only way to play this crazy game any way I feel that if guy,s like Watson and others are into it then thats good enough for me

    Dear Surge,

I want to thank you for recommending Lynn to us for a custom driver. I was hitting my Cobra driver pretty well, but inconsistently and somewhat shorter than I did a few years ago when my swing was more conventional. The price was right so I ordered a driver from Lynn. It arrived yesterday after a detour through the Office of Homeland Security next to my office suite. They brought it to me after satisfying themselves that there were no illegal drugs or illegal aliens in the box. My afternoon appointment canceled so I headed off to the driving range. Wow!!! What a difference! My shots were straight and seemed to be longer. That's good, but can it can deliver on the course? Today, 70 degrees and light wind, I headed to the course for a couple of holes before the sun set. I didn't have time to warm up, so hitting cold; my first drive was 240 yds., and left (bad alignment). My next shot was stiff to the pin - birdie. After a par 3 - bogie - my next drive on a par 5 was 270 yds. and straight - par. My next drive on a par 4 was 290 yds. with a slight fade - probably caused by the wind. It was getting dark at that point so I picked up and headed for the house. My point is that you were right that sometimes it’s the equipment rather than the swing. Lynn gave me a great driver at a fair price that fit me like a glove. I'll probably order more clubs from him and certainly will recommend him highly to all the golfers I know.

    Thanks again. Stay vertical.

    Chief-George Braswell:

In response to your post my issues are related to the siatic nerve going down the right side from buttocks to knee. Plus I have neuropathy resulting from diabetes. I am being tested now for possible spinal stenosis. I think that with all these issues they have caused me to somehow change my swing although I swing much slower I still cant figure why the left arm still colapses.

Surge, I am really enjoying the DVD's. The PPGS has helped me eliminate be slice and keep me in the fairway (for the most part). I am having trouble with my long irons and 5 wood of the turf. What is your take on Hybrids? My local pro told me to try a hybrid and put away the 3 and 4 iron. What do you think. Thanks, Don

Bubba, I am 63 and have Osto-Arthritis in both knees. My left knee was in pain all the
time and I couldn't get the flex I needed to play golf. This had been going on about a year.
My right knee started hurting in September of 09. In December I had my regular physical
check up. After my doctor examined both knees he suggested injections of Euflexxa. I had
the series of three injections seven days apart. Wow! It was a super lube job for my knees...
Now I have so much pain free flex in my knees that I have to work on my back swing, it is going
to far to control I am making much better contact with the ball, all because I can get the proper
flex in my knees. May not help you, but could be worth talking to your doctor about. Cheers, Chief-George

    Dear Support Team:

I called on 2-19-10 and asked about ordering the four dvd's and receiving the nine extra videos. I was told to download the dvd's on my computer and it was $ 47.00 dollars and it would cover everything. I did this. I like what I downloaded but it does'nt cover everything stated on the website. such as " chip & run, flop shots, bunker play, tweener shots, and some instructions from DJ". I called again today 3-2-10 and asked about this and was told that those were on a different video or that I would get everything if I was a inner circle member (what the heck is that?). I love what I got but feel dissapointed that it did'nt cover everything stated on the website.
Please let me know why what I ordered was different than what I read on your website.

    Thank You

J, I use steel. I was curious about your opinion about graphite and you responded. Thanks. I bought some steel A flex shafts to play around with because I had a couple old clubheads lying around. I like to tinker. Regarding your point about the physical side of graphite, I have a very rare disease called dupuytrens contracture. The little fingers of both hands are frozen at 90* to my palm and part of the ring finger. I had to go to a baseball grip and it took some getting used to. That is the main reason I quit playing for 25 years only to find it impossible to give up this great game. I have not mentioned that because this forum sounds more like a hospital ward every day. Any response to hitting off mats? Also thanks for mentioning the video thing. That is getting old and I am only here to learn the PPGS and the great input you give.

    Don,

I hope you can answer this post for me.. Im a pretty big guy.. NOT tall, but heavy like Craig Stadler. The trouble I have is that I open my hips like Larry on my downswing and find my self falling to the right (im Lefthanded). I have a draw biased driver and still slice like crazy. I have been pushing the ball to the left like crazy. I have tried the PPGS and what happens is because of my girth it makes it hard to keep my lower body still. On the backswing I find my hips and lower body turning to the left on the downswing cause on the takeaway I have to clear my stomach. That being said what is the best way to get to the T-Finish with out rotating my shoulder which Im guessing I do since my right hip is WAY to the right on the follow thru. I hope you can help Surge I dont want to stop using the PPGS. Yes my distance has suffered like everyone else, but its going straight and I dont lose as many balls. So please help a Big Guy with his swing.. Thanks..

I worked the WM Phoenix Open this last weekend and was able to see and observe DJ on the 7th (215 par 3). Apparently he was trying a draw (pin back left) because he did not stay verticle (go up the tree) on the backswing (inside about 10'oclock) but appeared to finish correctly. He did hit a good draw, but came up a bit short.

That aside, he did well and you should be proud and not too critical of his 'complete' adherence to the PPGS.

Those three dots should be set at a 45 degree angle and not the way they are shown in my post to you. I don't want to confuse you. Surge might be able to make a better diagram from his program. The center ball will be the one you hit once the angle is set for them. The bottom ball will be the one futherest from you and the top ball will be the closest to your left foot.

If you will go to a driving range, set your alignment to the target line, that is, two parallel lines going from target to the ball is the first line. Then set your feet, knees, hips and shoulder all are parallel which that line will be set left of the target, Take three golf ball and T them in the following manner. Space them enough so a club will pass between, once middle ball is removed.
    .
    .
    .
Move the middle ball out of the way and take a practice swing several times. Now replace the ball you just removed and swing club again trying NOT TO HIT THE OTHER GOLF BALLS. MAKE SURE YOUR ALIGNMENT IS CORRECT. ALIGNMENT, ALIGNMENT IF ITS OFF YOUR TENDENCIES IS TO COME OVER THE TOP WITH GOLF CLUB AS IN CASTING THE CLUB TO THE OUTSIDE AND PULLING IN WITH THE HANDS, WHICH IS WHAT YOU DON'T WANT TO DO. If it helps let me know. Just trying to help ya improve the game with enjoyment.

  • Clark Kent
    Don,
Recheck your distance of your set-up with the irons. You could be standing to close to the ball. Also have someone look to see if your rotating the club too much with the your hands at take away or not squaring club at impact. Simple drill is take a 2x4 turned up and set face of club next to it so they touch. Take club back and also do a downward swing only back to the 2x4 not hitting it but look to see where your hands and face of the club are for impact. Hope this helps there are other drills so check them out too.

    Surge,

Thanks for putting the picture back up for the finished T. I know you always say stay vertical, however some may have gotten the thought that the finished T was done with the golf club and not the shoulders and main body trunk. I could see where if they were to swing a rotational swing the shaft of the club would be horizontal to the ground. Just wanted to add to the suggestion.

    Thanks, Clark Kent

I am a 62 year old male having gone from a 12 Hdcp to now in the 30's in the past 2 years. This is a result of my knees which have arthritis. They are not serious enough for knee replacements at this time so say the doctors.

What has puzzled me is that for some reason my left arm seems to collapse during the follow thru.

I never experienced this before so I cant find the answer on how to correct it. I have even spent $$ going to a pro.

I have lost at least 75 yards off my driver and all my other clubs have lost distance as well. I have tried doing the 3/4 back swing but cant seem to get my body to make the same turn as before.

I believe this is whats causing me to loose distance and thus causing me to collapse the left arm.
I have gotten into a habit of breaking the left elbow during follow-thru and cant find a way to correct it.

Don, Thanks for the swing info. Swing like skipping a rock is occasionally used in the emails. I know skipping a rock is a simple move, but in the golf swing does this mean a right hand and/or right arm dominant swing down and through impact?
  • Jim from CT
    Surge,

Your answer to Clint Fletcher above may also apply to me. Too many times at the finish I find that my left foot ( I am right handed ) has spun to the left and my weight is on my heels. Could this be due to too far of a backswing or my feet too far apart? I am 6 ft. 3 in. tall and try and stand tall to the ball bending at the waist and flexing my knees. Should I flex my knees more to improve the finish? Thanks.

  • Ronnie,
What property of graphite makes it good for older golfer's as far as regaining lost distance?

You have again fallen victim to marketing hype of the OEMs. When they tell you that graphite is longer they are in fact telling a truth but a misleading truth. Most companies use the same weigh heads for their clubs that get steel shafts as well as graphite shafts. That being the case, the graphite clubs are ususally about a 1/2" longer. So, the club is longer. The applicable increase in distance, if any, is minimal at best. When it comes to woods and hybrids, graphite is a great thing. When it comes to irons, not as much so. You can get steel that is very light weight and has low kick points just like graphite. The main consideration of going graphite in irons would be pain. Do you have pain in hands, wrists, elbows, or shoulders. If so, graphite transmitts vibrations less and decreases the shock effect. That being said, you can also buy steel that does the same thing as well as shock absorbing grips.

Do you think grahite shafted irons would be beneficial for the older golfer that has lost distance? I went back to the range with the PPGS and every shot was high and straight. Something that bothers me is that I think hitting off a mat makes iron shots easier. I think you can miss hit it fat and get away with it due to the bounce off the mat. Weather has been so bad the grass hitting areas are closed so I have been working on my big weakness chipping and pitching. I just can't seem to do it. Is it still verticle no wrist cock? I think I know the answer.

Go Randy. Isn't it great when something clicks. The T finish is something to practice by itself. Cheers, Rick

Hi Don, I recently purchased the PPGS system, and am already seeing positive results with my handicap dropping from 20 to 18 in only a few weeks. I know I can do way better once I've mastered the finer points, and also stop reverting on occasion to my old wicked ways. One of my biggest problems is that I have to convert all the text and video into a left handed version which can be quite confusing. Is there any chance you can bring out a"cack handed" version for all of us Lefties, who I'm sure must number in the hundreds if not the thousands amongst your pupils?
Many thanks for all your help so far - Dave Northover
  • Yuri
It seems to me the problem with the "T" finish is that the right shoulder does not point towards the target at finish
Doesn't that mean the downswing has commenced with the lower body rather than the stomach and slight left hip movement ?

Surge, I purchased your tapes about 3 weeks ago and thought at first I would start getting my distance back. After having a real stroke last May,3 rd and being laid up for two and a half months I lost alot of muscle mass especially on the left side. Now I'm stuck in a mode where at 145 to 175 yards are not irons anymore cause I can't hit them that far anymore. I've been
trying my 7 and 5 woods to get that far. I went to a local pro that said my swing was good and she thought it would come back with the growth of some muscles. By the way I just turned 63 the other day and muscles dont grow like they used to. When I down loaded your lessons I lost
the 5-or 6 bonus lessons. Plus I havent recieved any driver instructions from your son yet. I hope I have'nt rambelled on to much. I sometimes feel like quitting but I love it when I parr a hole or hit a sweet shot that lands next to the stick. Thanks for being here Gary O

    Surge,

I, like many others, start out hitting balls, or plastic ones in the garage well after going over your lessons. Then, all of a sudden, it seems like I never hit a golf ball in my life. My biggest concern, after reading, viewing, and lessons, no one seems to tell me what or how to start my down swing. I seem to get in good position, to the mitt and straight back, then I go blank. I am a 67 year old, hip and knee replacement guy, who played a lot of baseball. Strong right hand. If I try to use my left hand more on the down swing, dropping the club into hitting ariea, I either hit one okay, leave the face open and hit it off to the right, or use too much right hand and jerk it dead left. Get me started on the down swing. Am I too much hands. Thanks Tom

    To Ted Edwards,

Just a thought about your problem spinning out on your left foot. I am assuming that you are right handed.

If you try opening your left foot more than 15 degrees at address, say to 25 or even 30 degrees, I bet your spinning days will come to an abrupt end and you will be back in control.

To Fritz Tallion and the Nice Folks Down Under,

Hello from Alaska! It is still cold here, and sometimes I wish I could spend a couple of months down there.

Anyway, back to business, Fritz mentioned Moe Norman's "Natural Swing" There are several similarities between the Natural and the PPGS. In fact, I have used this to my advantage, because my instructor is very well versed in the Natural Swing, as is my club builder. After a bit of conversation, they were both able to point out some things that I was doing wrong. I checked the videos and the blog, and sure enough, they were right.

One of my major swing flaws was in not letting my right arm straighten and my hands drop with my bump. Instead, I was initiating my forward swing with too much shoulder rotation. This caused me to come over the top and caused my distance to drop drastically.

Once the flaw was demonstrated to me, I was able to hit much longer shots with very little effort. Both my instructor and my fitter mentioned skipping a rock on a lake as part of the swing process. I was finally able to put two and two together, and my short driver hits were also a thing of the past.

If you can find an instructor who is familiar with the Natural Golf swing, I believe that he will be able to quickly pick up on any flaws in your PPGS swing and get you back on track.

    Hit'em Long and Straight,
    Bob
