DJ’s Club Fitting: Driver, Fairway Woods

DJ’s club fitting was with Chip Usher, of Usher Golf in his club fitting studio. Yes, this is an indoor fitting session, hitting into a net and using a launch monitor. I am not totally in sync with launch monitors, especially outdoors, because all the data is captured within a few feet of the ball coming off the club. All the data produces is basically arrived at through mathematical calculations on the few feet of ball flight the monitor captures to determine the launch angle, spin rate, ball speed, flight height and arc, and flight shape and distance of carry. Launch monitors, when used outdoors, do not have the capability to account for the external effects of wind and other variables that can affect the ball flight. In other words, outdoors there is more room for error than indoors, but the data definitely is good for evaluating and making more informed decisions that will be checked and validated or dismissed by the player hitting the clubs. We can never discount the feel and preferences of the player in what he/she wants to see and feel. That is the final deciding factor.

What I liked about Chip’s monitor is that his captures 3 ball positions as compared to many that capture only 2 positions. I think it is obvious that one more set of numbers from the 3rd ball position gives more accurate data. And, since all the data is captured in a few feet off the club, hitting into a screen indoors does not alter the numbers or change the results. They may be even more accurate because of a more controlled environment. The only thing missing is seeing the ball flight to add to the player’s evaluation of each shot.

My main goal for DJ doing this fitting was for Chip to see his swing, get the data and make his recommendations as to what DJ should be hitting in terms of shaft models in his woods and irons the flex/frequency, the length, lie, and grip size. Then I wanted him to check DJ’s clubs against his TItleist set to see where they stand relative to his recommended specs. If there was a difference I wanted him to re-shaft DJ’s clubs or for DJ to have the Titleist Tour techs build a set to Chips specs so DJ could test one against the other to see which he likes and performs best. I was not questioning his Titleist clubs. I only felt it was time for a second opinion from a club fitter I trusted. I felt it was time for DJ and me to know, through trial and error testing, if there was a change that could help improve his ball striking.

Chip started with DJ hitting the driver. My main concern was that I felt that DJ’s driving distance stats were going too short and I also felt that he couldn’t really power up with his present driver. I saw players outdriving him by too many yards that I felt, and DJ somewhat agreed, should not be that much longer than him, if at all. I felt that he was hitting it pretty good for accuracy and control but the loss of distance and the ability to go after it for the extra yards needed on longer par 4’s and par 5’s he should be able to reach, needed to be analyzed and answered.

After hitting around 10 balls, the data was consistent that DJ was hitting the driver with a lower than accepted launch and a descent spin rate. Chip, like me, likes a higher launch and spin rate. DJ had another back up driver, matching his Gamer, and after hitting 10 balls with that one the data was just about the same. With that, Chip went into his workshop and tested DJ’s driver on the frequency machine and said he was good with the frequency/stiffness which was an X-stiff shaft as DJ needs. He then said that the shaft in DJ’s driver was designed for lower launch and suggested another type of shaft that he feels is the best there is out there today and would really be the best for DJ to raise his launch angle as well as perform better overall. He point blank told DJ that with the present driver shaft he was loosing at least 20 yards air carry, never mind more roll, and the new shaft he mentioned would give it to him.

When Chip mentioned the shaft, Tupper, who was with us, jumped up with his driver in hand and walking forward holding it out mentioned that his driver has that shaft in it and Chip built it. Tup added that 2 weeks ago, after the Barclays Championship at Liberty National, he and DJ went and played Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. DJ had to use his clubs (DJ’s caddy Todd took his clubs to the Deutsche Bank tournament for him) and he drove the ball really good and he really liked the feel and performance of the shaft. He went on to remind DJ and tell us that DJ shot 4 under from the dead back tips, first time seeing the course.

DJ hit around 5 or 6 drives with Tup’s driver and just as Chip predicted, the launch angle and spin rate was up , his arc was higher and his distance, as calculated by the monitor, was an average of 20 yards longer in flight carry as he predicted. DJ commented that he likes the feel of the load and kick of the shaft, and even hitting it good it felt a little weak. Chip not remembering exactly what flex he built Tup’s driver, checked it on the flex meter and it came up to a mid to high range stiff, which is around a half flex too weak for DJ.
With chip again re-stating his recommendations for the shaft, DJ put up his hands and said hold it, reached into his pocket, pulled out his cell phone, hit a few buttons and put the phone to his ear. It seemed awkward and even inappropriate that DJ would interrupt this important conversation and make a phone call until I heard him say “Tutey, I need a favor.” Tutey is a nickname for Tuten, the last name of his Titleist Tour Rep that DJ works through for all his golf club needs. Next he said “Tutey, I need you to make me a new driver with a XXXXX brand shaft at my specs (concurring with Chip that he stated everything properly) and 44 inches, AFAP, and can you get it to me by tomorrow.” Chip chirped in, “Can they make one at 44 ½ inches also to try?” DJ added that to his request. DJ’s next words were “Great, thanks. I’ll hit it tomorrow and let all of you know how it works.” Then he pushed a button and dropped the phone in his pocket and with a big grin said “That’s taken care of. What’s next?”

What was next was to hit his 3 and 5 woods and see how they performed, as they both had the same shaft as his driver. Like his driver, Chip felt they were launching too low and with too low spin and recommended that he should try the same shaft in them as he is getting put in a new driver. With that, DJ put up his hand and said,”Hold it!” He pulled out his phone and in a few seconds said, “Tutey, I need a 3 wood and 5 wood to match the drivers. Thanks,” and hung up. Then with a big grin he looked straight at me and asked me if that was fast enough and if I was happy. I said, “Absolutely fast enough, and happy especially if they work the way we are looking for, which I am confident they will.”

That ended the driver and fairway woods part of the club fitting and also ends this article. Tomorrow I’ll cover the fitting and checking out his irons.

  • I bet Vegas wouldn't touch those odds. Anyways I know just from my kids that just about everyone in school shows up every morning with a hoodie on, some in the summer ( those kids scare me - if you know what I mean )

Don...excellent info on DJ's work with Chip Usher. The AGCP group, hosted by Roy Nix, ex PGA professional, consists of many excellent fitters and clubmakers across the country and internationally, that have been certified thru the AGCP testing program. The AGCP certified fitters can be located at www.agcpgolf.com.
  • Al,

Thanks for the info on the AGCP Group and their web address.

I will get this out on the site and maybe in an article. I will also try and contact them and invite them to send in articles that we can put up on our site to help inform and educate our membership in club fitting and club making.

    Don,

Having just went through the excercise of having a driver fitted for myself, I was curious as to your comment regarding wanting DJ to increase his rate of ball spin and launch angle. It seemed that the whole goal during my session was to reduce these numbers. I went from a spin rate of 3800 to 2300, and an average launch ange of 19 to 13. My average swing speed was 104 mph. Can you shed some light as to what the ideal numbers for the combination of launch angle, swing speed and spin rate should be?

    Thanks,
    Rob
  • Joey Keith
Don, I've been considering bumping up my shaft weight in the driver and fairway woods. The 3/4 swing has really increased my swing speed and ball speed. I have been swinging a 65X in my driver and a 75X in fairway woods. They feel too light in comparison with my irons. I swing TT x-100 irons. What do you think?

    Tony,
I first picked up a driver @ a range in Hawaii while waiting on my Dad, out of nowhere hit the 1st ball down the middle 375yds, 2 balls later, rolled one into woods @ end of range 450yds(21yrs old, 6', 235lbs, lots of flex/ I-Hand cord. back then, stud-muffin). Month later, new wore off and nobody would bet beer or money, have not touched a club since.
A redneck buddy of mine talked me back to the course this last June, paid $22/eleven clubs @ flea market and used his driver, scored 119/18(I'm now 50, still 6', 2xxlbs, still have I-Hand cord. just cant see the ball and not so much stud, just muffin). My 12yr old son wanted to go, so I went to pawn shop and got 2 sets, short for him, better set for myself-had a set of TM Rac Irons in it. Jr. scored a 128 his 1st time out.
My point, my son and I have practiced our butts off. Mostly @ school football field(small S. Arkansas town) all summer long! We both have applied the PPGS into our swing and we practiced more. Grip, Set-up, ALIGNMENT-ALIGNMENT, Swing, Tee-shots, 2nd shots, Pitching, Chipping, putting, putting breaks, and drills for all of them. The last time out, I shot 44 w/ almost 3 pars and Jr. shot 46 w/ his 1st par(he says he wants to frame the ball, boy ain't right sometimes). Jr. is in 7th grade and we are getting him ready to make an impact on the High School Golf Team in 2 years. Practice the whole game w/this PPGS swing and your game WILL come around.

YOUR INSTRUCTIONS, AND OR SUGESTIONS, FOR AN "OLDER" MAN WITH ARTHRITIS. I DON'T MAKE ANY ATTEMPT TO MAKE A "BIG TURN", BUT WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH A SHORT BACK SWING, AND OTHER "OLD" MAN TIPS!!!
  • Jeff Y
    Hi Don,

I have been using the PPGS for the last few months and am almost there! However, I seem to have lost a few yards for all my clubs and I could not get rid of my three-wood fade. Last night swinging with the LED trainer I realized that my left wrist was too cupped at the top of the backswing. Once I straightened it out, closing the face, and strengthened my grip slightly, my clubface was square again. Hitting a four-iron into the net I noticed a stronger impact sensation. My distance may have come back. Small details can make huge differences!

How does one become a certified PPGS instructor in Reno, Nevada?

    Jeff
  • Ron Davidson
    Don,

I'll doing really well using the PPGS.
Thanks for helping me with my swing.

However, you say the arm-wrist-club relative positions should not change during the swing

I can see that it's about 135° at set up (photo page 96)
same again after take away (photo page 97)
but 90° at the end of lift (photo page 98)

You should be at 10.30 instead of 12.00 if you had no relative movement between arm- wrist-club..
If you didn't cock your wrist your arm would have to be pointing 45° up in the air for the club to be vertrical- simple schoolboy geometry.

Since the arm is level then you must be cocking your wrists - that is the ONLY solution.

    jamie,

I also have had that problem and i felt my setup and swing was correct as well. I found that my problem was I was trying to kill the ball, try swinging with slower dont try tomuscle the club on the down swing let it come down and just swing it through. I did this the other day and i hit every fairway off the tee, the time before that i sliced and was in the woods every time so this helped me tremendously.
  • jamie
hey Don....i have a massive slice problem to the right , i have changed my grip three time and the way i grip the club too but i still slice!! my distance is fine but i always end up on the wrong fairway!!!...help mate...i have a outing on sunday...and would like a low score for a change lol.

    Judy,
It is so nice of people to continuously point out the grammatical errors in Dons' blogs, however, they probably should take the proverbial beam from their own eye before trying the remove the chip from Dons' eye. In your post you use the word "however" at the start of a sentence, followed immediately by a comma. Although it is perfectly acceptable to use this word at the start of a sentence, it is not used in the proper context there. You use it as a conjunction, therefore, it should have also had a comma before it because it is independent clauses joined by the word. It really should have gone more like this.....
I also like reading your daily blog and stories, however, it would be really nice of you to hire a proofreader so people that read your blog wouldn't feel the need to get all anal about your spelling. ; )

On another note, I took the driver to the range the other day for the second time. I noticed I didn't hit it nearly as well with the PPGS as I had the first time out. It took me a little while to figure it out, but I think I managed to figure it out. This time I only took the driver while the first time I took all the clubs and started hitting from the short irons up so by the time I got to the driver, the swing was grooved and I seemed to hit everything well. This once more drives the point home to me that people that only go to the driving range with their driver are not doing themselves a favor....even if the driver is the only club they're having trouble with. You need to take all the clubs and start with the irons every time. I will never again take only the driver out for practice and I strongly recommend that anyone who is even a little bit serious about the game take this same approach to practice.

I mentioned it before, but for those that may have missed it, this swing is great. I added 15-20 yards to my 7 iron alone. I know this because I used to hit the 7 between 150 and 155 yards, but, from the first swing of the PPGS system, I started hitting it 165 to 170 yards....and right down the middle. When the swing is groovin', the ball is movin'.
  • Sue
    Don,

I have been enjoying the dvds and posts. I am also hitting the ball cleaner, much to the amazement of family members who viewed me as lost cause. I am having trouble trying to work out the correct distance to stand from the ball at setup and how to achieve this each time. Any hints? I have really liked your clear instructions but can't seem to find anything apart from "butt of the club over the toes". This assumes that I am already bent over with knees flexed but where do I start from?

    Don

Thank you for the fitting news letter . I'm a fitter and the more imfo. that is put out is a good thing for the golfer that haven't had the imfo. to make good choice on equipment that fits them. Their are some good web spots that can give the location's to find good fitter's one is international clubmakers guild.com. They have a list of certified fitter's all over the world. So keep up the good work.
  • Tony
I will prolly never afford getting fitted for a set of clubs (i have two sets of dunlop handmedowns one set is standard the other is +1 i use the standard). My question is, I am a beggining golfer this is my first summer (only been playing for about 2 months) so far my best 18 holes was a 95 (green kills me). Is it worth getting fitted for a set of clubs? will it improve my ability to get better by enough to be worth spending the money?

I already wish i could hack an inch off my driver down to my 6 iron but im sure it would take a new shaft to shorten them.
  • Tom Page
I understand what you talk about here, because I have built my own clubs, and use a V2 shaft, tipped one half inch to split the R/S range, love the feel during the swing, but feel the trajectory is a bit lower than would be ideal for me. It has influenced the fairways woods as well as the driver. I would love to find a shaft that feels as consistant as this, loads like this, but launches the ball a bit higher. I am not even sure about the spin, but the launch angle would make a difference for sure. I have tried higher launch shafts, but have found every one to feel too soft, with a very negative effect on the tempo of my swing.

G'day, I have been committed to learning the ppgs and through your advise have purchased new clubs and changed alot of other things. Problem being , as with your club fitters and instructers, living in Australia i cant follow up your reccomendations (not that we dont have many golf shops) . I think you should acknowledge the fact that we have spent our money and commit to ppgs without any direct access to hands on help ie instructors/fitters involved in this system. I think that if you've gone as far as to market and sell this product to us in Australia, you should also make sure we can have a point of contact for help and direction as this system is so very different to the 'mainstreem' golf community and i havnt come across one person that doesnt think this swing is wrong or weird! This is not a criticism of the ppgs , im really excited that i discovered it and i think you are fantastic for developing it and working out whats best for our bodies. I really am working at it and it would be a massive help to have a reccomended(by you) instructor to contact here in South Australia. Look forward to what you can come up with, thanks, Mark
  • Mark,

I hear your requests for finding a certified instructor near you. At present I do not know of any instructors in Australia that are certified.

I am presently setting up a PPGS Certification program for PGA and LPGA professionals and hope to have the first session sometime in November or early December. I have just this past week received preliminary approval from the Carolinas PGA to award MSR education credits for the PPGS certification program based on the outline of the program and final approval based on the content. I have just e-mailed the content to them and am sure I will receive full approval. Once that happens I will then approach the PGA of America for the same approval on a national level and find out what it entails to get approval of foreign PGA's so we can get certified professionals all over the world. What we have planned is that after doing our first certification program, which will be video taped, we will be able to offer the program worldwide through the internet via a digital format. This should really help move this along in getting professionals certified all over the world as they can do the program at home.

As for a point of contact, we now have 24/7 customer service and are setting up a golf instruction hot line and Q & A contact. More on this will be put up on the site.

So, Thanks for your comments and I am peddling as fast as I can along with my PPGS staff to keep bringing the PPGS to you and all those who are now using the PPGS.

  • Don :When I do my fittings , like your friend Chip, I have seen the same thing many times. What I do ,as I bet Chip does is profile each shaft with my Freq. machine in 7 spots along the 46" shaft. and compare the findings to my data base made up of hundreds of current shafts. As we all know that when a shaft is made there can be human error during manufacturing. There can however be a "give and take "situation when ever a change is made.
  • John,

Thanks for the comment on your approach to checking shafts. I love to hear from club fitters telling about fitting as it adds more voices to mine in getting the message out about properly fitted clubs. With our readers hearing from the experts helps them understand more about the importance of properly fit clubs and how many golfers are playing with mis-fit equipment that just hampers and hinders their ball striking and playing better golf. So, to you and other fitters I invite your comments because they will help our readers and members learn more about their equipment.

HEY DON JUST WANT TO SAY THANKS FOR THE FIRST LESSON VIDEO.DO YOU KNOW A GOOD CLUB FITTER IN THE ALBANY AREA OR IN COLUMBIA COUNTY NY
  • Bruce,

I do not know of any fitters in your area. I will pass on what I tell everyone in that for you to go to your local course and ask the PGA Pro and top amateurs who they see for their club fitting and repair. The fitter the pros and top amateurs in your area go to is the one your want to see. You can also check the yellow pages and then call them and check their credentials and interview them.

  • Hey Don----love the series of articles. What is the approximate cost of a proper club fitting? Thanks
  • Nick,

I would guess that varies from fitter to fitter as well as to what length and degree of fitting one gets. And sometimes I would guess that if club alterations are needed and or a new set of clubs are bought the fitting fee may be discounted or even canceled. Naturally, when one speaks to a fitter asking the price of a fitting is a good and proper question as well as for discounts if he/she does any repairs, alterations and set building.

    Hi Don
I enjoy your articles, I was producton manager at the largest golf club maker in StAndrews Scotland.
Having been retired for some time I liked the article on club fitting and agree that this is an important service to golfers, so many play with the wrong equipment, even though some fitting may be slightly off, it is a lot better than not taking advantage of the service. Length and lie being very important.
We had a Sportech analyser, and in its day was a great asset in fitting.
I believe we were the first company this side of pond who committed a model to frequency matching, this was on the model we made from the liner Q2's propellors.

All the best, I will be keeping my eye on the young fellas progress

    Ian Donnachie
  • Ian,

Thanks for writing and confirming the importance of club fitting playing with fitted clubs. Hopefully the more I mention it and the more fitters like yourself write in and also relay the importance of fitted clubs and club fitting for all golfers of all levels of play. With the message being constant, hopefully more of our readers and members will seek out club fitters and get fitted and realize the benefit of better ball striking and playing fitted clubs can bring them.

    Don,

I have your program and it's improved my game nicely.
I also like reading your daily blog and stories.
However, could you please hire a proof reader?
For instance; the word is lose, not loose
  • Judy,

You are correct. Two spell checks didn't catch it because either spelling is correct what is not is the definition which in the way it is used in the article the spelling is wrong needing only 1 o as you pointed out.

I also have a proof reader who is a former college English professor and is a member of the Golf Writer's Association and writes and edits books and magazine articles for national publications. But he missed it like I did so I guess we both need, especially him to get 30 lashes with a wet noodle. Since he is to cover my back and missed it, I will really have to give him a good time ribbing.

    Hey there,
I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and was wondering if by chance you could recommend a good club fitter. I have struggled with my driver and finally have left it in the bag and am now enjoying the game much more:) So, now I am ready to find the right driver for me but do not want to be sold the wrong item as I do not know who to trust!

    Thank you,
    Joni
  • Joni,

I do not know a fitter in Calgary. I always tell golfers to check with their PGA Professional or top amateurs in their area which club fitter(s) they go to. The fitters the pros and top ams go to are the ones you want to see. Lastly, just check out your yellow pages and if some are listed call them and ask for references and their credentials.

Don - I'm recently getting back in golf and purchased your program. Monitoring your fitting with DJ I noticed he asked for drivers in 44" and 44 1/2". Is that a club length or a shaft length? I'm a short guy with short arms that fits to standard length and hitting a 45" driver. I've often wondered if I should go shorter. What are your thoughts on this?
  • Barry,

The length of the club is measured from the bottom of the club below the shaft to the top of the grip. By today's length standards 44 and 44 1/2 inches is shorter than standard for a driver which for most companies is now 45 and 46 inches. DJ is 6'3" tall and is swinging a shorter driver than standard. Since you are short I would say shorter than standard is likely what you need. The best bet is for you to check with your PGA Professional or club fitter and see what they recommend.

    Don
  • Love the story. I guess it doesn't matter what level the player when Dad is the coach. They will fight you every step of the way to the winners circle. http://www.aboutjuniorgolf.com
  • Randy,

They may not fight as DJ never does, you just sometime have to drag them kicking and screaming, or hopefully they see the light and come willingly as DJ did. Sometimes I have to calmly hint and hope and keep reminding him and usually he comes to my view and does what I ask or recommend and as you say gets to the Winner's Circle which is always one of the goals I relate to and remind him is the ultimate goal.
