DJ and The Surge Get Fitted

DJ, as far as I know, has not had a complete personal club fitting since back in college. Even being on the Titleist Professional Staff, they have built his clubs based on what he showed up with, measuring them and matching them. They have done a good job. He has hit the ball well but not scored well and has fallen back in the world golf rankings and PGA Tour money list. And, this year, he did not make it to Round 3 of the FedEX cup playoffs. That means he is not going to Atlanta’s East Lake for the final and the Tour Championship and is missing all the guaranteed money and bonus money just for getting there.

A month or so ago, he cracked that his “Gamer Diver Face” (gamer indicates it is in his bag as compared to his back-ups) and the new one, came with a new shaft. New as in new brand name. He had been using a real old version of a shaft that dated all he way back to college and before that, and maybe getting it was now difficult to impossible. He also had his 3 wood and 5 wood shafted with this new band of shaft.

He hit this shaft pretty good in all the clubs, but it did not just look right to me when he swung, especially when he seemed to put a little more power and heat into his swing. The shafts felt good he told me, but to me they looked too soft. I saw too much flex or load in them at the top of the backswing and they also looked too soft at Impact. His irons, he said, felt great and his GIR (greens in regulation) were basically hanging steady.

Either way, I felt it was time for a good club fitting from an independent source to, first and foremost, have the fitter determine exactly what he believes is correct for DJ in terms of length, lie, and most importantly, flex and brand and model of shafts, for both his woods and irons. The key was I had to sell DJ and convince him this was needed. I used the concept of getting an independent evaluation and recommendations, if different from his present specs, can only help the Titleist Tour fitters and builders build him better clubs if he tries the new recommendations and they work.

I had just the club fitter in mind, Chip Usher, of Usher Golf in Savannah, GA. Chip has a great reputation and has worked on the clubs of some tour players and many of the top players in the Savannah and Hilton Head area. He also has re-shafted a few drivers and built a set of irons for my website partner, Justin Tupper who recommended Chip to me.

I went to see Chip to check out my irons (I have had my woods checked and re-shafted) and fit me to see exactly what I needed, as I have not been fitted in over 5 years. I hate to admit it but I am not getting any younger and I was sure that even though I was still hitting all my irons the same distance and pretty good, I was working too hard and having to hit with extra energy and force to maintain the distance. My comment to Chip was that now, with my irons as compared to my woods, I was having to use more muscle with the motion. I was tiring out and my lower back was achy from all the extra exertion and muscle I was expending to hit the irons. I told Chip, “I wanted motion without needing to add extra muscle.” I wanted my smooth and flowing swing back, not the power hitter swing I was now forced to use.

Chip decided that my frequencies/flex was correct, but that I needed a lighter and softer shaft that would load and release the energy more and thus I would not have to supply as much muscle power. He said that my swing speeds were still pretty good for my age and he recommended me staying with steel shafts because they are easier to match a set up and overall respond more consistently then graphite in flight pattern and distance control.

I had Chip build me a complete new set of irons as I wanted to keep my old set (with which I won the 2007 Carolinas PGA Senior Player of the Year) intact and to have it as a test against this new set. Chip built me a great set and aced the shaft flex and feel. I am a happy camper as I am now back swinging with smooth motion and less muscle and hitting it solid and the distance is even a little longer. The other great improvement is that I am now able to work the ball better in hitting it higher and especially lower with knockdown shots and I have gotten my cut shot back. Hitting the intentional draw and hook is never a problem with me, only now it is easier and more controlled. The amount I want is what I get.

Well, with the success DJ saw in my new irons and how well I hit them and liked them and with Tupper also very happy, DJ bought into my concept of the independent recommendation and testing his recommendations, if different than his present specs, and decided that driving down from Charleston to Savannah to do the fitting one morning was a good idea and definitely one that was needed. The fitting went well and I’ll fill ya’ll in on the happenings and findings in tomorrow’s article.

  • Don,
Golf Clubs and Tennis Raquets etc have changed greatly in recent years compared to what players used many decades ago.

Tennis Raquets were made of solid Wood in the early years - which had nothing like the power that modern Tennis Raquets have..

For a long time improvements were not of much interest to manufacturers.

I suspect that Club manufacturers simply made Clubs the same length for their own convenience and put over the story that one size fits all players

But for someone like Jessie Valentine who though only 5ft 2ins won Scottish, British and French Championships , she either had special clubs made or she held the clubs half way down the grip. Either that or she had very wide golf swings
This is why it is perhaps questionable that cutting one inch off the length of a club should make much difference ( except in the psychological sense) but once again - I know little about Golf and am open to be corrected.

Something you may not know - so test it out for yourself; the vast majority of men, regardless of height, have hands that are exactly the same height from the ground. There are of course exceptions but for the most part that is true. That is why I suppose there are standard size clubs.
    Try it out.
    John
  • John,

That may be true in general, but I know for a fact that I am out of the majority as I have extremely long arms with a 35 inch sleeve and I am only 5'9" and maybe 8" now and my son DJ who is 6'3" has the same 35 inch sleeve and he is at least 6 inches taller than me. DJ plays irons +1 inch and I -pay -1 inch. You also have to remember that bodies also come in longer than normal as do legs so a man or woman can have a long torso and short legs and vice versa and all these differences can change length needs and if not length certainly lie angle. So Standard is the place to start, and see where every individual falls in relation to standard as to needing it or adjustments.

    Don,

In the middle of the last century Peter Thomson (later to be several times British open champion) went around a top Australian course in 64 .
He was 17 at the time.
Imagine what he would have gone around in - using your techniques !

I am not being critical - you might be right.

But I can't quite see how a tall player say six feet four can have the same required hitting stance as a player who might be five feet four - using basically the same clubs.

Obviously the tall player must bend over more when hitting the ball.

It might be appropriate for a tall player to have MUCH longer clubs so that he can be more erect when hitting the ball.

you see Tennis and squash players can all get away with the same sized racquets -because the racquets are just an extension of their arms so to speak, but a tall man using the same length clubs as a smaller man seems a bit odd.
hey, but I know nothing about Golf .

As someone once noted - it is often a good way to ruin a nice stroll in the Park ha ha

Yet all the walking is good exercise and has almost certainly added years to the lifespans of many golfers.

As old Hank Williams used to say after his Bands performances, We'll be back soon - the good lord willing and if the creeks don't rise ...
And if my circumstances change a little - I might start swinging a golf club again trying some of your ideas.
In the meantime I'l settle for Squash.
It is a fast indoor sport and the weather outside does not matter
But its a sport where strategy and guile can see an older man often beat players half his age .
When you are in my kind of physical condition, then beating players one third my age is always an option ha ha.
just for laughs - see my website and photos at www.jimbernard.org

I must be the only moron out here-- I went from a 11.2 to a 16.5 index this year. I use to hit a seven iron 150 now I hit a five iron- maybe? Cannot figure out what i'm doing wrong with the PPGS. The PPGS is great , it's me for some reason.

D.J., I am a convert to your swing and have been working on it for about 8 weeks. I am a member of White Columns north of Atlanta, a fine Fazio course. My swing coach is D.J. Fiese, a fine young man who played on the Hooters tour and knows your son. Two very important things to thank you for: my back is adapting to this swing and is not nearly as sore because I'm not torquing (sp?) as much, and secondly I'm starting to score. This past weekend my club held the wettest Member-Member tournament possible. My partner and I were leading after the first round by 2. The second round was called after 9 holes because of the rain and will be rescheduled at a later date. We are tied for the lead. In 27 holes I had an eagle and 4 birdies applying your swing methodology. We're playing from the tips and have had 10 plus inches of rain....and it is still raining this morning. The course is playing as though it is 7500 yards. The good part is I'm 5'10" when I stand up, 180 pounds, and 64 years old. I've made a conscious decision that I will stop tinkering with my swing not that I'm using your methodology and will start honing my game. I love to practice and can now hit, chip, and putt without hurting my back. I would like to visit you and arrange a private lesson or two. Thanks...Jim

To Howard. I'll field this one for Don so that, as a consistent reader of the board, I don't have to read repeated, and increasingly angry requests. (Don you should have your site manager put this direction on the FAQ.)

Posting a comment on the bulletin board saying, "Take me off your email list" probably won't work; these email systems are usually automated. I don't receive the emails, so I'm not sure about this, but you can usually opt-out by clicking a link at the bottom of the email message. It might say something like, "To stop receiving emails..." or "To manage your subscription..." or "To manage your account...."
  • Kelly,

Thanks for your concern and suggestions for the opt outs. I am certain that there is an opt out buttonor e-mail address to click on to take one off. And I would think that there is an answer in the FAQ section. If not, I will tell the programmers to put an answer there. Lastly, there is also customer service to call.

    Thanks again for your thoughts,

    Don

    Don,
How do you get clubs fitted for myself when my swing is still not where it should be. I bought your DVDs and still have not mastered your swing. I am having trouble with balls fading to the right and not getting a solid hit on the ball. I seem to make a lot of fat shots taking too much dirt. So how do I get a correct club fitting with a terriable swing? Thanks

I have been reading the blogs now for some time, and it seems to me that some of the people writting in expect an awful lot from the Surge. Comments like the ones from Jim Bernard have no positive or useful effect in this forum. I have books and videos by Tiger, Miller, Niclaus and others, and I would never expect them to reply to any questions I may have regarding my swing or equipment. The fact that the Surge does reply to some of the questions and comments is a bonus.

I read the blogs every day, and enjoy the insight and thoughts that the Surge is "sharing" with us. I wish my dad had tried to get me to concentrate on doing at least one thing really well. I'm sure that DJ would agree that he is where he is because of desire, hard work, and help from his family.

Instead of expecting answers from the Surge for every little question, like "why am i slicing the ball?" maybe we could use these blogs to help each other a little? There must be hundreds of people out there that have mastered the swing that could give us a few of thier tips and swing thoughts, and some of the methods they have used to solve some of the same problems. Heck my 10 year old son told me about something in the swing that I hadn't seen.

I have seen the 10 free lessons, purchased the videos and book, and all for a price of about 4 lessons from my club pro. Pretty good value I think. Keep up the good work Surge!

Jim Bernard,,According to statistice Tiger is the best in the world,Your father must be a real turd for you to have these kind of feelings,Maybe you should talk to someone about that,Possably get into some therapy,I was raised by a stepfather and he was a turd as well,Piano was for sissys, and so was golf,My mother had a piano but i wasn't aloud to toach it of course,I don't read a lick of music but i can listen to anything,Jerry lee Lewis,Lee greenwood, and other select artist and set down at my Yamaha baby grand and play it,And not just play it but play it well!!! I picked up a Golf club for the first time 3 summers ago and found the same love and passion,,I loose another 5 or 6 strokes and i'll be a scratch golfer!! How good would I have been if i would have started as a child with a father or mothers support?
Don,,God bless you and the support you give your son,If he needs a break he'll ask for it,If more fathers would stick around and support their son's(even if they want to be a ballet dancer)we would have more MEN in the world instead of a bunch of over grown boys that avoid the responsabilty of supporting thier own!My apoliges in advance for getting long winded ,But it really hits me the wrong way how anybody could nock a parents support for the children.God bless!Dale

Thanks Don,I am a casual, new club golfer and regularly turn up each occassion.Have my handicap 36 for par 62 in Sydney.Today is my 1st day to try out my new confidence your 10 videos and downlowded Manual give to me.From practicing in a reasonable back yard, hitting straighter and with knowing my grip and address prior,I went out today expecting a better result.A better result was had, especially with more constant direction, general clean hitting along with confidence.Putts were less and getting to the green quite much better.Although I got 103 off the stick,my general game is now showing to my play partners a change and self confidence already. We had a perfect day for golf, yes good Aussie weather which helped the mindset. Was put off on some tee-offs by not deliberate chatting by other players before hitting the ball and allowed it to play in my mind, just through concentration off in the downswing action. So I am a happy, fulltime truckdriver who enjoys the challenge and cannot wait to let you know when I get to low 90's for the 18 holes.Bit by bit I take on board from your generous available lessons and advice, letting it sink in gradually and eventually my goal is,all this knowledge and confidence one day will become a natural part of my golfing.Thank you so far for the revival and confidence in what I am doing in my game.My mindset is set.. I'll keep in touch Don....catch U soon.

    Hello Surge,
I have a question about irons used by touring pros. Can you tell me how often they replace them? Thank you.
  • Kelly
A--holes like Jim don't even deserve a response. On the other hand, I have to agree with him about Tiger. I wring my hands daily thinking, "Why, why, why did is daddy push him to be a golfer instead of letting him wander the streets like his pal, Jim, hoping that he would one day find himself and his true calling. He could have been a ballet dancer, a musician, or a mail delivery person. Instead, the poor, wretched creature languishes away, adored and followed by millions, on his way to being the first billionaire sports figure (and it must suck so bad having that Swedish model for a wife). Why couldn't he have been more like Jim who exults in his job so much that he isn't bitter at all. Man, having a caring, engaged father sucks!"
  • My daughter and I were talking about this on the course today. She wants to replace the graphit shafts in her irons with steel. I told her before we make any changes to her equipment we were going to the factory and have them custom a set for her.

She is playing in college and would like to see how far she can go. http://www.aboutjuniorgolf.com

Titleist tour fitters you say? If DJ changes his set I would get your trusted independent fitter to back check the tour fitters work?
  • Jim Bernard
    Don,
Some of your advice has been interesting and worth experimenting with.
Pity you don't answer a question or two at times.

I will have to disengage as I have too many e-mails coming my way on various subjects, but I wonder if should consider giving DJ some space for a while ?

He is no longer a teenager and having a possessive parent can be a pain at times.

Tiger had mixed feelings about his Dad at times.
Even when he was very young - his Dad was sure he would be world's best golfer.

But that was his Dad's ego talking.
Tiger might have preferred to be a Ballet dancer - who knows ?
But he had no choice in the matter - because of his father's expectations.

Your theories might be right, but you should be burning up the Seniors Tournaments Instead of hoping that DJ might prove your theories correct.

He might like to experiment with other styles like other Pros do.

If you drop your heavy meat and white flour products diet (like pizzas breads cakes etc) and switch to a mostly fruit and vegetable diet - you will slim down and be much more competitive yourself.

I have learned a lot from not only the on-line videos but from your weekly tips. While we share the same first name, I stand on the wrong side of the ball as most of my golf buddies tell me. I can understand what you are saying but for us Leftys maybe a (for leftys) would help us guys.

Club Fitting: About the time your article came out I had already gone to a fitter. Background, I gave my irons that I had played with for a number of years to my son, who also stands on the wrong side of the ball. So I bought the last set of Leftys in San Antonio TX. They were high end, but they were also off-set. Bad News!

I went to a club fitter and we tested an 8 iron with no off-set that was built for me. OMG, I put 17 of 20 shots into a 15 foot circle at 145 yard, just a nice easy swing. I am a bogey golfer. The clubs are designed by Tom Wishon but his fitter here is top drawer. What is the cost? Just a few dollars more per stick than off-the-shelf clubs I bought in TX. You are right on wth DJ getting fitted and if you love golf, you have to do this.

    How can you help me?

Let's put it this way. I suck at chipping for money and putting. I would like to see more chipping examples from close range.

By the way, the vertical backswing does not work for me. It must be the years of baseball and AAA softball. The most important thing for me is finishing up to the T! So my club head is probably a little over the toe line, but it's very comfortable there. The ball goes where I intend it to go if you do not observe this simple rule.

    Frank,

Putters are probably the ultimate "feel right: club -- at least half the putting battle is confidence.

The style of putter for you depends on the greens you usually play -- fast? slow? hard ? soft ? Beyond that -- you must like and feel confident with your putter. I prefer a lighter putter on hard fast greens, a heavier one for slower softer greens.

Personally I use an old style Bullseye putter -- for me it works great out to about 20 or 25 feet. It is a great putter for fast firm greens --- on slower softer greens, I use a a heavier Ping Anser 3. With either putter I generally have 6 or 7 one putt greens versus perhaps one three putt.

You shouldn't have to play several rounds with each putter --- a short session on the putting green with 2 or maybe 3 different putters should provide the answer -- at most in about 5 or 10 minutes with each type.

    GOOD LUCK!!

    Amos

  • Robert Bilardo
    Hi Don,

Love all the info you share with us, very informative and helpful.

I purchased your Peak Performance Swing, that you must download, I am struggling with the new swing terribly, when I play a round I need to revert back to my old swing.

My questions is, in the videos you mention drills that you will have us do later. I can't find them anywhere, must I download something else that I have missed.

The season is ending and I need to master this swing, so please show me where to find the drills so I can practice them.

Thanks a lot, and keep up the great job....

I am confident that DJ wil definitely benefit with his new clubs, although our children may be reluctant at first to listen to our Dad's advice, in the end they realize we only want the best for them.

    Thanks,

    Bob

I've been having trouble with my driver. I have at least 6. I was fitted, and none of them feel right.
Last month I was playing with a few guys that had several expensive Japanese drivers.
I hit my drive, maybe 220 yds. One guy say's try this one, I did, and hit it 35 yds past my ball.
It was a MUMNA, I asked how much, he said $1800.00. I said have a nice day. What I
noticed was that this driver was light with a nice feeling flex. It was also 500 CC's
Still searching. I'm ready to give it one more try. Any suggestions?
    Thank you HG.

    Surge,

I need to learn something about putter styles. There are small blade types. There are blade types with considerable depth - "2-ball type". There are shallow mallets and deep/wide mallets. Do you purchase based on your putter swing? Do you purchase based on your strength? If your swing isn't right for the club, should you adapt the swing to the club? I'm trying to figure out which one to buy without trying each of them for several rounds.

Thanks Surge. I read every article you publish. And find them all informative.
